REAL Project Outcome: Main project – Children will learn about mountains, mountain ranges and rivers around the world. They will study the geographical aspects, as well as researching famous expeditions that have taken place throughout history. Throughout the topic they will produce pieces of work that will go on display for a ‘Mountain & Rivers Exhibition’.

Cleadon Hills Thurston Healthy heart workshop

Date for exhibition/project outcome: Thursday 23rd March

Project Launch: The children will be visiting a local area popular for walking/rambling, rock climbing and nature lovers – Cleadon Hills. We will explore this area, in a similar way you would be able to explore a mountainous area. They will also get an understanding of walking across uneven terrain. They will learn about some of the history of the hills, as well as trying some basic orienteering. At the highest points they will have a view of the mouth of the River Tyne, giving opportunities for discussion about the journey of a River.

Immersion: Mountain range wallpaper covering the room. A model of a mountain range, with a river and boulders at the back of the classroom. The children will also create a lot of pieces throughout the topic to add to the immersion of the classroom.

POSSIBLE PROJECT QUESTIONS How are mountains formed? How are rivers formed? Mountains and rivers around the world? Why do people climb mountains? How does the water cycle work?

PSHE Money matters – understanding finance and money, shopping and budgeting, goal setting and motivation. Fairtrade, globalisation inequalities & hunger and poverty.

CLASS NOVEL: The Mountain of Adventure (Enid Blyton) ENGLISH COVERAGE: Short stories (fiction) Report writing Play scripts Narrative poetry Argument texts/Debate Grammar, spelling and reading will be taught within English lessons as well as discretely.

ART & DT Art – use sketchbooks to record ideas and observations, before revisiting these and developing their ideas to achieve a final piece. DT – use different materials and select appropriate tools to make a model of a mountain.

COMPUTING Develop project management skills in terms of apps. Research the app market Use computer based programmes to support maths and English.

HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY History – children will look at historic mountain expeditions and their outcomes. They will also research famous mountain explorers. Geography – describe and understand key physical geographical aspects of mountains and rivers. Use maps, atlases and globes to locate continents and countries and their mountains and rivers.

MUSIC Ukulele tuition – Continue to perform with control and expression; solo and in ensembles.

SCIENCE Evolution and inheritance – fossils/adaptation/classifying microorganisms, plants and animals. Classifying living things – identify and describe characteristics of plants and animals, compare plants and animals, classify using major classification kingdoms, construct classification keys.

RE Islam – children will continue to explore the Islam faith and how it compares to Christianity. Easter story will be studied in detail and how this impacted on Christianity.
