2016 Augsburg Baseball Holiday Camp

Augsburg baseball camps will be held on the Augsburg College campus inside the Augsburg dome over Edor Nelson Field. Players will be training on a new FieldTurf Revolution surface, which was installed on the field during the summer of 2013. The surface is used at numerous collegiate and professional stadiums across the country and the world. The dome and the artificial surface make Edor Nelson Field a valuable asset for the baseball program. With batting cages and netting located on each side of the dome, players will have an opportunity to hone their skills in a safe environment.

What to Bring Students should come in baseball attire along with their own baseball hat, glove, and any other protective equipment desired. Personal batting helmet and bat are encouraged but not mandatory. Turf or tennis shoes are required; please no rubber cleats. Please label all personal equipment. Parking for the camp is available in Lot L. For a campus map go to augsburg.edu/about/map.

2016 AUGSBURG BASEBALL HOLIDAY CAMP Baseball Camp Instructors Keith Bateman will enter his thirteenth season as the leader of the Augsburg baseball team in 2017. Bateman has been the architect of a revival of fortunes for the Augsburg baseball program during his tenure. Taking a team that had gone 18-53-2 in the previous two seasons (9-24-2 in 2003, 9-29 in 2002), Bateman’s Auggies finished 16-22 in his first year in 2004, then went 24-18 in 2005, qualifying for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs for the first time, where they finished second. Bateman was named MIAC Co-Coach of the Year in 2005. The Auggies returned to the conference playoffs in the 2010 season, finishing second, while the 2012 squad recorded a 24-15 record and tied for fourth-place in the MIAC standings. A three-time All-MIAC selection (1996-98) at Bethel, Bateman had served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons (2000-02) and as a volunteer assistant coach at MIAC regular-season champion St. Thomas during the 2003 season. Coach Bateman was an instructor at the Greater Twin Cities Baseball Camps from 1994-2001. He has also been an instructor at the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services coaches clinic. Bateman is also an instructor for the Minnesota Twins Training Camps. Scott Lieser– Augsburg Baseball Assistant Coach A former collegiate and professional baseball player is serving as an assistant coach in 2017. Lieser played collegiately at St. Cloud State (Minn.), where he finished his career with a school-record 32 victories (32-7) in 66 appearances, 226 strikeouts and a 3.10 earned-run average. A two-year captain, he earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors twice and All-Central Region honors three times. Lieser was named to the Daktronics Division II All-America honorable mention squad. Lieser played professionally in the Milwaukee Brewers organization for three seasons (2013-15), reaching the high-A level. In 63 professional appearances, mostly as a reliever (99.0 innings), he went 4-5 with two saves, 87 strikeouts against 14 walks. During his college years, he played summer baseball in the Northwoods League with the Waterloo Bucks (2010) and Willmar Stingers (2011-12).

Camp Philosophy “Developing the Fundamentals” The camp will emphasize the fundamentals of sound play—defense, hitting, and pitching. Campers will learn drills that they can take home with them to continue their baseball development. Players will “practice with a purpose” as they learn how to play the game of baseball. Camp instructors will emphasize respect for the game and respect of others.

Who should attend the camps? Players who want improve, are coachable, and hustle; the same characteristics that define the Auggie baseball team.

Camp instructors: The additional instructors for the baseball camp will include Augsburg baseball assistant coaches and senior baseball players.
