Sept. 12 - Weekly Report 2016 Big South Football • 3

2016 Big South Football LOOK WHO’S 2-0! Monmouth is 2-0 for the second time in three seasons as Big South members, as well as the sixth time in the program’s 24-year history. The Hawks will seek their first 3-0 start this Saturday for the first time since 2006 and fifth time overall. It is the 13th consecutive year that at least one Big South squad has opened a season 2-0. REG-GIE, REG-GIE Monmouth WR REGGIE WHITE JR. recorded career-highs of 11 receptions and 129 yards this past Saturday at Delaware State. He is the second Monmouth Hawk with a 10-reception game since MU joined the Big South in 2014, as former wideout and current Jacksonville Jaguar NEAL STERLING hauled in 11 passes at Lehigh on Sept. 27, 2014. KHALIL’S GOT THE WILL Gardner-Webb RB KHALIL LEWIS recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game this past Saturday at Western Carolina with a team-high 121 yards. He is the first GWU rusher with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since KENNY LITTLE in 2011. Little gained 153 against Stony Brook on Nov. 12 and 142 the following week at VMI. BLOCK PARTY Monmouth blocked a Big South single-game record four kicks this past Saturday at Delaware State, with MIKE BASILE recording two of the deflections. The Hawks blocked two punts, one field goal and one PAT attempt to break the old league record of three set by VMI in 2004 and matched by GardnerWebb in 2009. Basile was responsible for the FG and PAT blocks, and is the first Big South player with two blocked kicks in a game since Liberty’s FRANCIS BAH in 2012. RANK AND FILE With Charleston Southern’s appearance in the national polls this week, the Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 67 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 season (Oct. 24). The Buccaneers are ranked No. 12 in both the FCS Coaches poll and STATS ranking, and No. 11 in the Hero Sports Media poll. MAXWELL HOUSE Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is now sixth all-time in Big South history among quarterbacks with 1,274 rushing yards. He needs 13 to move past KYLE HUGHES (VMI) for fifth-place. Maxwell is also one rushing score shy of becoming the 14th Big South signal-caller with 10 career rushing TDs. Meanwhile, Maxwell rushed for 154 yards and passed for 102 at Elon in Week 1, becoming the first quarterback in Big South history with three career 100-yard rush / 100-yard pass games. He shared the previous record of two such efforts with seven other quarterbacks -- including current Kennesaw State QB TREY WHITE. MOVING THE CHAINS Monmouth RB LAVON CHANEY is tied for second all-time in Big South history for receptions by a running back with 75 -- just three away from breaking the record of 77 held by DE’ANGELO HENDERSON. Chaney’s 609 career receiving yards out of the backfield are also second-most among Big South running backs, and 122 away from Henderson’s record of 731. Meanwhile, Chaney has thrown for three touchdowns during his time in the Big South, tied with former Liberty WR ADRIAN HALL for the most TD passes by a non-quarterback. ROAD TRIPPIN’ Monmouth and Presbyterian are each opening the season with three consecutive road games, marking just the sixth and seventh time overall that a Big South member is opening a campaign with three straight away games. Charleston Southern was the last league team to do so in 2011, as the Bucs have opened with three straight road games three times (2008, 2009, 2011). Liberty was the first Big South team to open a season with three consecutive road games in 2003, while PC did so in 2010. HOME SWEET HOME Big South teams are 2-1 in home openers thus far, and Gardner-Webb plays its first home game this Saturday against nationally-ranked The Citadel. Monmouth and Presbyterian open their respective home slates in Week 4. Below is a look at the last home-opening win and current home-opening streaks for GWU, MU and PC. 2016 Big South Football EXCEPTIONAL ESTES Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior TE MIKE ESTES is the Big South’s all-time leader for receiving yards by a tight end with 1,118, and is tied for the top spot among tight ends with eight career touchdown receptions. His next target is the tight ends’ receptions record of 90, which is held by former teammate SETH CRANFILL (2010-14). Estes is second all-time with 89. HAMMING IT UP Charleston Southern’s DARIUS HAMMOND is second in Big South history with 556 career punt return yards, and is 78 away from breaking the league’s all-time record of 633 currently held by Coastal Carolina’s NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO. Hammond is also on pace to become the Big South’s all-time leader in combined kick return yards. He is currently fourth with 2,209 and is 516 yards away from breaking the record of 2,724 held by Gardner-Webb’s J.J. HUBBARD. Meanwhile, Hammond is 708 yards shy from becoming just the eighth player in conference annals with 4,000 career all-purpose yards. 2,000-YARD RUSHING ODYSSEY Charleston Southern RB MIKE HOLLOWAY is 64 rushing yards away from becoming the 20th player in Big South history with 2,000 career rushing yards. He is the Big South’s active career rushing leader with 1,936, ahead of Monmouth’s LAVON CHANEY (1,806). Presbyterian’s DARRELL BRIDGES is next at 1,589. Holloway would become the second Buccaneer on the Big South’s 2,000-yard rushing list, as would Bridges in regards to Presbyterian. Chaney would be Monmouth’s first entry among the conference’s career 2,000-yard rushers. GEE-WIZ Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER, who opened the 2016 season as one of 34 FCS players named to the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List, is 55 tackles away from becoming the 14th player with 300 career tackles, and would be the fifth linebacker on the all-time list. Geter has accumulated 148 solo tackles and needs 10 to enter the league’s Top 10 in that category. Meanwhile, Geter has amassed 29.5 career tackles-for-loss as well as 10.5 sacks. He needs 8.5 TFL to match the Big South career TFL record among linebackers (38.0 - MARTY PATTERSON, Gardner-Webb), and 3.5 sacks to equal the linebacker sack record of 14.0, which is held by MAURICE SIMPKINS (Coastal Carolina, 2003-05). THREE’S COMPANY Charleston Southern will have three active players with 1,000 career rushing yards when DARIUS HAMMOND reaches the milestone this season. Hammond needs just seven yards to join MIKE HOLLOWAY (1,936) and BEN ROBINSON (1,264) in the club. The three players have rushed for a combined 4,193 yards and 41 touchdowns on 660 carries -- a combined average of 6.35 yards per carry.

MAGIC MIKE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE surpassed 200 career tackles with his nine solo stops at Lehigh in Week 1. He now owns 142 career solo hits and is 16 away from entering the Big South’s Top 10 in that category. In 2015, Basile became just the third defensive back to lead the Big South in total tackles and tackles per game in a season as he finished with 119 and 10.8 per game, respectively. He joined ROBERT MASON (VMI, 2004) and MARIO WILLIAMS (Gardner-Webb, 2002) as the only DBs to pace both categories in the same year. TOP CHEF Gardner-Webb linebacker AARON COOK eclipsed 200 career tackles this past Saturday at Western Carolina. He owns 8.0 career sacks, and is two away from becoming the fifth linebacker with doubledigit sack totals. WHITE-WASHING Kennesaw State QB TREY WHITE became the ninth quarterback in Big South history to surpass 1,000 career rushing yards, as he eclipsed the milestone against East Tennessee State in Week 1. White sits ninth all-time with 1,032 career yards and needs 151 to move into the eighth spot. White added a rushing TD in the opener to become the 13th Big South signal-caller with 10 career rushing touchdowns. SEA SHELLS Liberty WR DANTE’ SHELLS has 79 career receptions for 1,493 career yards. He is 21 catches away from joining the Big South’s 100-reception club and 507 yards away from 2,000. Shells would become the 13th player with both career milestones once he reaches each total. TIPPING THE SCALES The Big South is 11-13 all-time in games involving a ranked member against a nationally-ranked nonconference foe -- including 6-8 in the postseason. Of the 13 losses, nine have been by a touchdownor-less.

Sept. 12 - Weekly Report 2016 Big South Football • 5

2016 Big South Football PORTRESS OF SOLITUDE Kennesaw State DE TONARIUS PORTRESS tied the Big South single-game record for tackles-for-loss when he registered 5.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage against East Tennessee State in Week 1. The previous player with this distinction was Presbyterian’s UGONNA AKOH vs. Gardner-Webb on Nov. 23, 2013. Portress is now the seventh player in Big South history with 5.0 TFL in a game -- but just the second to achieve the feat in a season opener. GOOD WORK YOUNG MAN The Big South Conference is once again represented among the national candidates for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Liberty’s DEXTER ROBBINS is among the 165 candidates from every subdivision and classification. Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER was a 2015 nominee. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 124, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Charleston Southern at 49. In addition, Liberty is the Big South’s record holder for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 68. Meanwhile, Liberty has scored a point in all 68 of its Big South games, the longest such streak in league annals. Of those 68 games, the last 56 have been in double digits. Charleston Southern’s current streak of 42 conference games with a point scored is third-longest all-time, just ahead of PC’s active streak of 40 games. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN PICKED TO WIN IT ALL IN 2016 For the first time, defending conference champion Charleston Southern University has been tabbed the favorite in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason football poll for the 2016 campaign, as voted by the league’s head coaches and media panel. The Buccaneers won their first outright title last season and were co-champs in 2005. BIG SOUTH OFF TO ANOTHER SOLID START AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FCS FOES While the Big South is 4-4 after eight games against non-conference FCS opponents, two losses were both in overtime and by seven points or less. Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the Big South is 56-26 ( =68.3 winning percentage) in regular-season competition and 61-31 ( =66.3) when including postseason games in that span. The Big South has posted at least a 60.0 winning clip in each of the previous three seasons. CSU’S PUNT RETURN GAME SETS GOLD STANDARD Charleston Southern returned seven punts for a Big South single-game record 248 yards against Kentucky State. The Bucs shattered the old mark of 159 punt return yards set by Coastal Carolina against CSU in 2010. In fact, Charleston Southern’s punt return yardage from that game would rank as the 17th-most IN A SEASON in league annals. CSU averaged a league-record 35.4 yards per punt return against Kentucky State, and became the first team in conference history to have TWO players with 100 punt return yards in the same game -- KELAN FRAISE (Big South-record 126 yards) and DARIUS HAMMOND (122). LIBERTY ON CUSP OF 50 BIG SOUTH VICTORIES Liberty has won a league-high 49 Big South games since the conference started football in 2002. Gardner-Webb is third with 31 Big South wins, followed by Charleston Southern (30). SIXTH SENSE The Big South had six players named preseason All-American by STATS LLC, just one shy of the league record. Charleston Southern led the conference with four honorees -- First-Teamer ERIK AUSTELL and Second-Team selections ANTHONY ELLIS, JOSEPH SMITH and DARIUS HAMMOND. Monmouth’s MIKE BASILE was a Second-Team honoree, while Gardner-Webb linebacker CHAD GETER was named to the Third-Team. HAMMOND NAMED CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD For the sixth consecutive year, a Big South player opened the season as an official candidate for the FCS National Offensive Player of the Year Award, as Charleston Southern RB DARIUS HAMMOND is among the initial 22 candidates for the top individual award in FCS. He is the first Charleston Southern player to earn this distinction. ELLIS NAMED CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD For the third straight season, a Big South player opened the campaign as an official candidate for the FCS National Defensive Player of the Award, as Charleston Southern DL ANTHONY ELLIS is on this year’s initial watch list. He is the first Charleston Southern player to earn this distinction.
