Eleven Days to Start of IHSAA Softball State Tournament Three hundred seventy‐four (374) teams were drawn and placed into brackets this morning for the start of the 32nd Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series which begins in 11 days. Sectional action runs May 23‐28 with the 64 survivors moving into a one‐game regional round on Tuesday, May 31. From there, 32 teams will square off in four‐team semi‐states on Saturday, June 4, with the four state championship games scheduled for Saturday, June 11 at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. Class A defending state champion Hauser, also top‐ranked in this week’s state coaches poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA), will take on South Decatur in Sectional 60 at Rising Sun. Other No. 1 teams include Class 4A Penn which drew South Bend Adams in the Sectional 3 opener at Mishawaka. Class 3A No. 1 New Palestine will host Indianapolis Marshall in the bye game in Sectional 26. And Class 2A’s Henryville will meet Providence in Sectional 46 at Crawford County. Among the other defending state champions, Class 4A’s Center Grove, ranked third this week, will meet Greenwood in Sectional 13 at Franklin Central. Gibson Southern, last year’s 3A state champion and now in 4A due to the Tournament Success Factor, will face Evansville Reitz in the Sectional 16 opener at Evansville North. North Central (Farmersburg), last year’s Class 2A champion and now a Class A school by enrollment reclassification, will take on Clay City in Sectional 57 at White River Valley. Also of note, Tecumseh extended its state record 13th consecutive sectional championship a year ago and will look to continue that string against Cannelton in Sectional 64 at Northeast Dubois. Games and playing schedules will be added to the brackets at MaxPreps.com later today but due to possible weather postponements and other conflicts this time of year, it is advised to check with the host school for precise schedules. About the Draw To conduct the random drawing for the softball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping‐pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery‐style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and eight semi‐states. No. of Schools Entered: 374 teams, 6,285 participants. Breakdown by Class: 97 in 4A; 97 in 3A; 96 in 2A; 84 in 1A. Total No. of Games: 370 games in 20 days. Schools Playing Up One Class due to Tournament Success Factor (3) Gibson Southern (Class 4A, Sectional 16 at Evansville North). Leo (Class 4A, Sectional 5 at DeKalb). North Miami (Class 2A, Sectional 37 at Oak Hill). Page 1 of 8

*** About the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) The IHSAA is a voluntary, not‐for‐profit organization that is self‐supporting without the use of tax monies. Since its founding in 1903, the Association’s mission has been to provide wholesome, educational athletics for the secondary schools of Indiana. Its member high schools ‐ public, institutional, parochial and private – pay no annual membership fee or incur entry fees to play in the Association’s tournaments. A state tournament series is conducted annually in 21 sports, 10 for girls, 10 for boys and one co‐ed (unified track and field). A 19‐person board of directors, elected by member school principals, governs the organization. Media Contact Jason Wille Sports Information Director Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc.
