PATRICK D. HORVATH
KIWANIS CLUB OF MILWAUKEE
Founder, Veterans Afield U.A. Patrick D. Horvath joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1958, and trained at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Submarine Squadron (6) in Norfolk, VA. Patrick’s first naval ship was the U.S.S. Orion (AS18), and he was later transferred to the U.S.S. Kittiwake (SR13). At his request, he was transferred to the U.S.S. Sea Leopard (SS483). Patrick was extended twice on active duty for the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Blockade, with Vietnam as a possibility during that time. Patrick was released from active duty only to come home to Milwaukee to become part of the Naval Ready Reserves. Patrick started at American Motors as a forklift driver during his reserve time in 1962. He received his complete, honorable discharge from the Navy in 1964. Patrick went into management in 1963 and went back to school at MSOE and Marquette University. He worked at American Motors for 38 years, retiring with the position during his last 13 years as National Operations Manager under the Chrysler name. After retirement, Patrick decided that he needed to give back more and the best way was to give back to those, our veterans, who gave so much for all of us. He formed Veterans Afield U.A., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 2013. The organization takes out all disabled men and women veterans, including those with spinal cord injuries, for trapshooting, and pheasant and duck shooting. Patrick’s organization provides everything for the veterans at no cost to them. There are no veterans left out. If they have the desire to go, Veterans Afield will see that they are given the opportunity. Patrick’s reward is seeing their satisfaction, enjoyment, and hearing the veterans ask when they can go again. Patrick belongs to St. James Church in Franklin, WI, and volunteers there in various capacities. He and his wife, Diane, will be married 53 years this August. Patrick has two daughters, Wendy and Cindy, and two grandchildren, Sean and Meredith.
