Coaches Coach Derek Schmitt is in his second season as head coach at CBU. Coach Schmitt was promoted to head coach in May 2015 after serving as the program’s assistant during the 2014-15 school year. In Schmitt’s first season at CBU, the Lancers improved by eight wins, finishing 14-16 overall. Schmitt has been coaching at the collegiate level for 17 years and 22 years overall. Prior to CBU, Schmitt started the men’s volleyball program at Erskine College in South Carolina. During the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Erskine compiled an overall record of 34-23, including a record of 21-7 in 2014. That season, Erskine won the Conference Carolinas regular season and conference tournament championships and earned the conference’s first automatic bid to the NCAA Division I-II Men’s Collegiate Volleyball Championship. During Schmitt’s two seasons at Erskine, his players were recognized with one AVCA Honorable Mention AllAmerican, eight all-conference players, one Defensive Player of the Year and one Freshman of the Year. All of the award winners were either freshmen or sophomores. Coach Andy Hein is in his second season as an assistant coach at CBU. Hein stepped into the coaching profession last August after successful collegiate and professional playing careers. At Pepperdine, Hein was a member of the 2005 team that won the NCAA Division I-II Collegiate Championship and was a two-time AVCA first-team All-American. After graduating from Pepperdine, Hein played for the U.S. National Team, participating in the World League, NORCECA Continental Championships, FIVB World Championships, Pan American Games, America’s Cup and World University Games. He won six medals at those competitions, including gold at the 2010 FIVB World Championship Qualifier for NOCECA Group F and the 2008 Pan American Cup. From 2007-15, he played professionally with stops in Romania, Puerto Rico, Greece, Russia, Switzerland, Itlay, France and Austria.
