The even will take place at Springfield Golf Club. THE SCHEDULE: The women will run a 6-kilometer course to start the meet off at 11:10 a.m. PT/12:10 p.m. MT. The men, who will race an 8k course, will start at 12:10 p.m. PT/1:10 p.m. MT. An awards ceremony will follow. RESULTS: Results will be posted at www.pac-12.com after the races. SOCIAL MEDIA: Fans are asked to use the hashtag #Pac12XC for the championships. PAC-12 NETWORK: For the first time in conference history, the meet will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. Jim Watson will serve as the play-by-play and Dwight Stone will provide the color. Lewis Johnson joins the duo as the on-course reporter. MEET PREVIEW: The CU women are looking for their third straight, fourth overall, Pac-12 team title, but it will not be easy. The Buffs enter the meet as an underdog to top-ranked Oregon, which will be racing on its home course. CU is currently ranked third in the national rankings. In total, there are six conference schools ranked in the top 30. Washington and Stanford are 13th and 14th, respectively, while Utah is 27th and California is 28th. The men are looking for their seventh consecutive title and enter the meet as the top-ranked Pac-12 school at fifth. But right behind the Buffs is Stanford at sixth. Oregon is also a top-10 team, coming in at eighth. UCLA is ranked 14th entering the meet and Washington State and Washington are 20th and 21st, respectively. THE WEATHER FORECAST: The forecast looks great with sunny skies and a high of 63 degrees. CONFERENCE HISTORY: The Buffs have had a habit of doing well at the conference meet no matter what the conference. The men have won a total of 28 championships and have been the runner-up 18 times. The lowest finish the men have ever recorded was eighth in 1960. They have never placed lower than second since 1990 when they were sixth at the Big Eight Championships. The men have also won the first six Pac-12 Conference team titles (2011, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16). The women have also done well. They have won 18 titles, three in the Pac-12, and placed second eight times since 1976. The women have never placed lower than sixth at the conference meet. WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR: For the third time since 2011 and the second time in as many years, Colorado won the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. title with 33 points, placing all five of its scoring runners in the top 15. Senior Erin Clark was second overall, while sophomore Dani Jones took third and junior Kaitlyn Benner placed fourth. Sophomore Makena Morley also had a top ten finish, placing ninth. Freshman Sage Hurta rounded out CU’s score at 15th, but she was followed closely by sophomore Mackenzie Caldwell (16th) and junior Melanie Nun (17th), either of which could have been CU’s fifth runner. The men’s team was ranked seventh heading into the meet, behind then-No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Oregon, but that did not matter to the Buffs as they captured their sixth straight title, defeating Stanford 41-47. Senior Ben Saarel was third overall and junior Zach Perrin placed fourth. Sophomore John Dressel took sixth overall and sophomore Ryan Forsyth placed ninth. Redshirt freshman Joe Klecker was the fifth runner to finish, placing 19th overall. MAKE IT SIX!: The CU men have taken the Pac-12 Conference by storm after winning the first six league championships. The Buffs won the inaugural Pac-12 title in 2011, defeating Stanford 46-53. In 2012, CU did it again, only that time the score wasn’t as close as the Buffs won 49-82 versus runner-up Stanford. Making this feat a little more impressive is that the Buffs won the title in 2012 without a single scorer from the 2011 season. In 2013, CU won the conference crown over Oregon 28-54 in Louisville, Colo. for its third straight title and beat the Ducks again in 2014 (30-57). In 2015, CU defeated Stanford 46-57. Most recently in 2016, the Buffs defeated Stanford 41-47 in 2016 to win the conference title. PAC-12 WIN STREAKS: The six straight Pac-12 championships for the men’s team matches the longest streak in Pac12 history. Stanford won six straight Pac-10 championships from 2000-06. THREE IN SIX YEARS: The CU women’s team has won three of the six Pac-12 titles since joining the league in 2011. The Buffs won the inagural title in 2011, defeating Washington 50-73. They won again in 2015, this time besting Oregon 4551. CU made it two straight in 2016 when the Buffs handily defeated Washington 33-74. WHAT IS IN A POLL: Both CU teams are ranked in the topfive of the latest USTFCCCA Division I Coaches Poll. The women are third, while the men are fifth.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Buffs will compete at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday, Nov. 10 in Logan, Utah, at Steven & Dona Reeder Cross Country Course. The top two teams at the meet automatically qualify for nationals.
PRE-NATIONALS RECAP: CU recorded a pair of runner-up team finishes on Oct. 14 at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The seventh-ranked men’s team finished second to No. 2 BYU. The Cougars tallied a score of just 41 points, while the Buffs totaled 118 points. CU finished ahead of Pac-12 rival, No. 8 Oregon, which picked up 129 points. Joe Klecker placed ninth overall to lead CU. The top-rated women suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to second-ranked Oregon, 63-91. No. 9 Arkansas came in third overall (148). Dani Jones recorded a third-place individual finish.
LOUISVILLE OR BUST: For the third time in six years, the NCAA Championships will take place in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 19.
NUTTYCOMBE RECAP: The Buffs sent their emerging varsity teams to compete at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13 and got some great results. The women’s team won the ‘B’ race, defeating runner-up, Michigan State, 35-60. Melanie Nun led the women with a second place finish. The men placed second to Stanford, 60-66, and out-ran Michigan State, which was third with 78 points. Mark Tedder was the top harrier for CU, finishing second overall. JOE PIANE INVITE RECAP: In a cross country showdown between a pair of top-five programs, top-ranked Colorado and third-rated New Mexico, it was the Buffaloes who took home the victory, besting the Lobos by four points (47-51) at the Joe Piane Invitational. The Buffs and Lobos each placed four athletes in the top-10 of the 5-kilometer race and were the only two teams in the field of 20 to score less than 100 points. The third place finisher, No. 12 NC State, tallied 118 points, while No. 9 Arkansas took fourth with 171 points. On the men’s side, the fourth-ranked Colorado men’s team placed second in the 5-mile blue race with 101 points. Southern Utah, which came into the meet ranked 13th, won with 72 points. Air Force was third overall with 154 points. RMS RECAP: In what has become a tradition, CU won both the men’s and women’s team titles in the 32nd running of the Rocky Mountain Shootout at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU’s South Campus. Both teams performed quite well. The women scored 16 points to best Northern Colorado (42) in the NCAA Division I race, while the men totaled 17 points to best Air Force (55), Colorado State (76) and Northern Colorado (93). Val Constien was second in the women’s race, finishing in 21:34; while Chris Herrick placed fifth (25:54) to lead the men. RMS MEET HISTORY: CU’s men have won the last 27 shootout titles and 28 of the last 32. The women have won 19 straight titles and 25 of the last 26 races.

32 YEARS OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOOTOUT: The Buffs hosted the 32nd Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 30. The race has become one of the longest running meets in the nation. Oklahoma State’s Cowboy Jamboree is in its 81st year, and the Stanford Invitational is running its 44th race this season. The Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. started one year before the RMS. Iowa State ran the Iowa State Memorial for 32 years, running the last one in 2003.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS: The Buffaloes return six All-Americans this season, four women and two men. Senior Kaitlyn Benner is a two-time All-American, while juniors Mackenzie Caldwell and Dani Jones, along with sophomore Sage Hurta, all earned the honor in 2016 for the first time. For the men, junior John Dressel is a two-time All-American and sophomore Joe Klecker was a 2016 AllAmerican.
CSU RECAP: CU started the season off on a strong note, winning the men’s and women’s team titles at the Colorado State Invitational on Sept. 1. The men’s team handily defeated the rest of the field, totaling just 22 points, while the runner-up, Air Force, was second with 66 points. The women’s race was much closer with the Buffs besting Colorado State by one point (35-36). Ethan Gonzales won the men’s race, finishing the 5k race in 14:51. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team, placing fourth in 17:37.
WHO’S BACK: Colorado returns a lot of talent from the 2016 team, especially the women’s team. Besides the four All-Americans, junior Makena Morley and sophomore Tabor Scholl both scored for the Buffs in the post season. On the men’s side, seniors Christian Martin and Zach Perrin, along with juniors Ryan Forsyth and Ethan Gonzales return as 2016 postseason scorers with Dressel and Klecker.
CSU INVITE RECAP: Both the men and women won the CSU Invite on Sept. 1 to start the 2017 season. Ethan Gonzales won the individual title in the men’s race to lead the Buffaloes as they recorded 22 points. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team with a fourth place finish as they tallied a score of 35 points.

HEAD COACH MARK WETMORE THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE REALITY: Colorado head coach Mark Wetmore enters his 26th season at Colorado, his 23rd as head coach. He became CU’s sixth head cross country and track and field coach on November 6, 1995. Wetmore is the only Division I cross country coach to win all four NCAA titles – men’s and women’s team and men’s and women’s individual – at the same school. Wetmore’s squads have won seven national cross country titles since 2000. The women won in 2000 while the men won the following year. Both teams captured the championship again in 2004 (CU became only the third school to win both championships in the same year). The men won again in 2006, 2013 and 2014. Wetmore has coached Adam Goucher (1998), Jorge Torres (2002) and Dathan Ritzenhein (2003) to men’s individual cross country titles, while Kara Grgas-Wheeler won the 2000 women’s crown. CU athletes have earned 122 All-American cross country honors during his tenure. Wetmore has been named the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year twice (’00 and ’04) and the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year three times (‘06, ‘13 and ‘14). He is a 30-time conference coach of the year and in 2014, USA Track and Field named him the USA Co-Coach of the Year. In addition to national titles, his teams won 23 Big 12 Cross Country Team Titles (11 women’s, 12 men’s), 16 individual Big 12 Cross Country Titles and Wetmore was named Big 12 Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 19 times. He was the winningest Big 12 Conference head coach among all sports when CU left the conference in 2011. CU joined the Pac-12 Conference in the fall of 2011 and Wetmore’s teams won the inaugural Pac-12 men’s and women’s titles – the first Pac-12 Championships in any sport. His men have won all six titles since joining the league in 2011 and his women have won three (2011, ‘15 and ‘16). On the track, Wetmore’s athletes have had a strong presence at the conference, national and professional levels. They’ve captured 100 individual conference titles, two conference team titles, 16 NCAA individual titles and earned 183 All-American honors. CU athletes have broken seven collegiate middle and long distance records. CU runners’ success at the professional and postcollegiate level is unmatched by any university: over two dozen Buff grads have signed professional contracts. They’ve combined for more than 49 USA titles in cross country, track & field and road racing. Since 2000, 10 CU athletes or graduates have earned 19 U.S. Olympic Team berths at distances from 1,500-meters through the marathon. Fourteen current and former Buffs have earned 31 spots on U.S. World Championship Track Teams and 25 have combined for 61 berths on U.S. World Championship Cross Country Teams. Since 2004, CU graduates have won seven medals in distance running at World Championships – Shayne Culpepper (bronze, 2004 Indoor 3k), Kara Goucher (silver, 2007 10k), Dathan Ritzenhein (bronze, 2009 Half Marathon), Jenny Simpson (gold, 2011 1,500m and silver, 2013 and 2017 1,500m) and Emma Coburn (gold, 2017 steeplechase). Coburn (steeplechase) and Simpson (1,500) became the first to win Olympic medals, both bronze, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. They were the first American women to medal in their respective events. Charles Mark Wetmore graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Rutgers in 1978 before receiving his Master’s in movement sciences from Columbia in 1998. He lives in the mountains west of Boulder.

title with 33 points, placing all five of its scoring runners in the top 15. Senior Erin Clark was second overall, while sophomore Dani Jones took third and junior Kaitlyn Benner placed fourth. Sophomore Makena Morley also had a top ten finish, placing ninth. Freshman Sage Hurta rounded out CU’s score at 15th, but she was followed closely by sophomore Mackenzie Caldwell (16th) and junior Melanie Nun (17th), either of which could have been CU’s fifth runner. The men’s team was ranked seventh heading into the meet, behind then-No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Oregon, but that did not matter to the Buffs as they captured their sixth straight title, defeating Stanford 41-47. Senior Ben Saarel was third overall and junior Zach Perrin placed fourth. Sophomore John Dressel took sixth overall and sophomore Ryan Forsyth placed ninth. Redshirt freshman Joe Klecker was the fifth runner to finish, placing 19th overall. MAKE IT SIX!: The CU men have taken the Pac-12 Conference by storm after winning the first six league championships. The Buffs won the inaugural Pac-12 title in 2011, defeating Stanford 46-53. In 2012, CU did it again, only that time the score wasn’t as close as the Buffs won 49-82 versus runner-up Stanford. Making this feat a little more impressive is that the Buffs won the title in 2012 without a single scorer from the 2011 season. In 2013, CU won the conference crown over Oregon 28-54 in Louisville, Colo. for its third straight title and beat the Ducks again in 2014 (30-57). In 2015, CU defeated Stanford 46-57. Most recently in 2016, the Buffs defeated Stanford 41-47 in 2016 to win the conference title. PAC-12 WIN STREAKS: The six straight Pac-12 championships for the men’s team matches the longest streak in Pac12 history. Stanford won six straight Pac-10 championships from 2000-06. THREE IN SIX YEARS: The CU women’s team has won three of the six Pac-12 titles since joining the league in 2011. The Buffs won the inagural title in 2011, defeating Washington 50-73. They won again in 2015, this time besting Oregon 4551. CU made it two straight in 2016 when the Buffs handily defeated Washington 33-74. WHAT IS IN A POLL: Both CU teams are ranked in the topfive of the latest USTFCCCA Division I Coaches Poll. The women are third, while the men are fifth.

PRE-NATIONALS RECAP: CU recorded a pair of runner-up team finishes on Oct. 14 at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The seventh-ranked men’s team finished second to No. 2 BYU. The Cougars tallied a score of just 41 points, while the Buffs totaled 118 points. CU finished ahead of Pac-12 rival, No. 8 Oregon, which picked up 129 points. Joe Klecker placed ninth overall to lead CU. The top-rated women suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to second-ranked Oregon, 63-91. No. 9 Arkansas came in third overall (148). Dani Jones recorded a third-place individual finish.
LOUISVILLE OR BUST: For the third time in six years, the NCAA Championships will take place in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 19.
NUTTYCOMBE RECAP: The Buffs sent their emerging varsity teams to compete at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13 and got some great results. The women’s team won the ‘B’ race, defeating runner-up, Michigan State, 35-60. Melanie Nun led the women with a second place finish. The men placed second to Stanford, 60-66, and out-ran Michigan State, which was third with 78 points. Mark Tedder was the top harrier for CU, finishing second overall. JOE PIANE INVITE RECAP: In a cross country showdown between a pair of top-five programs, top-ranked Colorado and third-rated New Mexico, it was the Buffaloes who took home the victory, besting the Lobos by four points (47-51) at the Joe Piane Invitational. The Buffs and Lobos each placed four athletes in the top-10 of the 5-kilometer race and were the only two teams in the field of 20 to score less than 100 points. The third place finisher, No. 12 NC State, tallied 118 points, while No. 9 Arkansas took fourth with 171 points. On the men’s side, the fourth-ranked Colorado men’s team placed second in the 5-mile blue race with 101 points. Southern Utah, which came into the meet ranked 13th, won with 72 points. Air Force was third overall with 154 points. RMS RECAP: In what has become a tradition, CU won both the men’s and women’s team titles in the 32nd running of the Rocky Mountain Shootout at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU’s South Campus. Both teams performed quite well. The women scored 16 points to best Northern Colorado (42) in the NCAA Division I race, while the men totaled 17 points to best Air Force (55), Colorado State (76) and Northern Colorado (93). Val Constien was second in the women’s race, finishing in 21:34; while Chris Herrick placed fifth (25:54) to lead the men. RMS MEET HISTORY: CU’s men have won the last 27 shootout titles and 28 of the last 32. The women have won 19 straight titles and 25 of the last 26 races.

32 YEARS OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOOTOUT: The Buffs hosted the 32nd Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 30. The race has become one of the longest running meets in the nation. Oklahoma State’s Cowboy Jamboree is in its 81st year, and the Stanford Invitational is running its 44th race this season. The Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. started one year before the RMS. Iowa State ran the Iowa State Memorial for 32 years, running the last one in 2003.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS: The Buffaloes return six All-Americans this season, four women and two men. Senior Kaitlyn Benner is a two-time All-American, while juniors Mackenzie Caldwell and Dani Jones, along with sophomore Sage Hurta, all earned the honor in 2016 for the first time. For the men, junior John Dressel is a two-time All-American and sophomore Joe Klecker was a 2016 AllAmerican.
CSU RECAP: CU started the season off on a strong note, winning the men’s and women’s team titles at the Colorado State Invitational on Sept. 1. The men’s team handily defeated the rest of the field, totaling just 22 points, while the runner-up, Air Force, was second with 66 points. The women’s race was much closer with the Buffs besting Colorado State by one point (35-36). Ethan Gonzales won the men’s race, finishing the 5k race in 14:51. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team, placing fourth in 17:37.
WHO’S BACK: Colorado returns a lot of talent from the 2016 team, especially the women’s team. Besides the four All-Americans, junior Makena Morley and sophomore Tabor Scholl both scored for the Buffs in the post season. On the men’s side, seniors Christian Martin and Zach Perrin, along with juniors Ryan Forsyth and Ethan Gonzales return as 2016 postseason scorers with Dressel and Klecker.
CSU INVITE RECAP: Both the men and women won the CSU Invite on Sept. 1 to start the 2017 season. Ethan Gonzales won the individual title in the men’s race to lead the Buffaloes as they recorded 22 points. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team with a fourth place finish as they tallied a score of 35 points.

HEAD COACH MARK WETMORE THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE REALITY: Colorado head coach Mark Wetmore enters his 26th season at Colorado, his 23rd as head coach. He became CU’s sixth head cross country and track and field coach on November 6, 1995. Wetmore is the only Division I cross country coach to win all four NCAA titles – men’s and women’s team and men’s and women’s individual – at the same school. Wetmore’s squads have won seven national cross country titles since 2000. The women won in 2000 while the men won the following year. Both teams captured the championship again in 2004 (CU became only the third school to win both championships in the same year). The men won again in 2006, 2013 and 2014. Wetmore has coached Adam Goucher (1998), Jorge Torres (2002) and Dathan Ritzenhein (2003) to men’s individual cross country titles, while Kara Grgas-Wheeler won the 2000 women’s crown. CU athletes have earned 122 All-American cross country honors during his tenure. Wetmore has been named the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year twice (’00 and ’04) and the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year three times (‘06, ‘13 and ‘14). He is a 30-time conference coach of the year and in 2014, USA Track and Field named him the USA Co-Coach of the Year. In addition to national titles, his teams won 23 Big 12 Cross Country Team Titles (11 women’s, 12 men’s), 16 individual Big 12 Cross Country Titles and Wetmore was named Big 12 Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 19 times. He was the winningest Big 12 Conference head coach among all sports when CU left the conference in 2011. CU joined the Pac-12 Conference in the fall of 2011 and Wetmore’s teams won the inaugural Pac-12 men’s and women’s titles – the first Pac-12 Championships in any sport. His men have won all six titles since joining the league in 2011 and his women have won three (2011, ‘15 and ‘16). On the track, Wetmore’s athletes have had a strong presence at the conference, national and professional levels. They’ve captured 100 individual conference titles, two conference team titles, 16 NCAA individual titles and earned 183 All-American honors. CU athletes have broken seven collegiate middle and long distance records. CU runners’ success at the professional and postcollegiate level is unmatched by any university: over two dozen Buff grads have signed professional contracts. They’ve combined for more than 49 USA titles in cross country, track & field and road racing. Since 2000, 10 CU athletes or graduates have earned 19 U.S. Olympic Team berths at distances from 1,500-meters through the marathon. Fourteen current and former Buffs have earned 31 spots on U.S. World Championship Track Teams and 25 have combined for 61 berths on U.S. World Championship Cross Country Teams. Since 2004, CU graduates have won seven medals in distance running at World Championships – Shayne Culpepper (bronze, 2004 Indoor 3k), Kara Goucher (silver, 2007 10k), Dathan Ritzenhein (bronze, 2009 Half Marathon), Jenny Simpson (gold, 2011 1,500m and silver, 2013 and 2017 1,500m) and Emma Coburn (gold, 2017 steeplechase). Coburn (steeplechase) and Simpson (1,500) became the first to win Olympic medals, both bronze, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. They were the first American women to medal in their respective events. Charles Mark Wetmore graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Rutgers in 1978 before receiving his Master’s in movement sciences from Columbia in 1998. He lives in the mountains west of Boulder.
