2018 ALL-STARS INFORMATION Parents, we have passed the half-way point in our spring 2018 season and it is time to begin the selection process for the Mira Mesa Youth Baseball 2018 All-Star teams. The purpose of this packet is to provide you information about the selection process and spell out the level of commitment required if your child is selected. Please read this document carefully. If you’d like your child to be considered for selection to an All-Star team, complete and submit the All-Star Candidate Form at the end. Forms must be submitted to team managers no later than April 13, 2018
Player Selection Process A ‘player pool’ of eligible players will be created solely by the completed All-Star Candidate Forms submitted by parents. In order for a player to be considered eligible, they must have played at least 50% of the possible games in their assigned division this spring season. Managers, in their respective divisions, will then rank who they believe are the top 12 players in each age division and those players will be selected to the teams. We will likely form age group teams in each division (e.g. Mustang will have a 9U and 10U team). 9 year olds can play on the 10U team, but 10 year olds cannot play on the 9U team. In addition to the two primary teams per division, we may also form a ‘B’ team from the remaining players if warranted. This ‘B’ will likely be mixed age for the division.
Playing Time It is important to be very clear about this subject as it has historically been an issue for some parents in the past:
The one main goal for the creation of All-Star teams is to win tournaments. This is a completely different mindset from our regular season where specific participation rules are put into effect to ensure that all players get a ‘fair amount’ of playing time. In All-Stars, playing time will be merit based – things like skills, ability and attitude will be key factors for managers as they make their decisions. No player is guaranteed playing time; all spots are earned. Most importantly, players must understand that they are likely to be asked to play positions they normally don’t in order to best support the success of the entire team. Players, or their parents, who are not ready for this reality might want to take pause and reflect before submitting their player’s names for consideration.
Time Commitment Many families schedule their summer vacation months in advance. Those plans may be significantly impacted if your child is selected to play on an All-Star team. Travel plans must be adjusted to accommodate the significant time commitment that comes along with playing on an All-Star team. All of the other children on the team are counting on your player to be available and to find out at the last minute that a player is not available is unfair to everyone. The All-Star season begins on April 28th and will continue until each team is eliminated from competition, which could last until late July. Practices and scrimmage games will begin around April 30th and can occur several times a week throughout the entire period. This is important because these same players will still have practice and game commitments to their respective regular season teams. With that, most All-Star players will participate in 4 practices a week plus a minimum of 2 games a week. All-Star players are expected to attend all of their All-Star practices and scrimmages. All absences must be excused by the team’s manager. Here is a list of the tournament periods for the All-Star teams: Memorial Day Tournament May 25th – May 28th All-Star Sectionals Mid-June to Late June All-Star Regionals/World Series Early July/Late July
2018 ALL-STARS INFORMATION Financial Commitment Participation in All-Stars also represents a financial commitment by each family. This commitment usually comes in 2 forms – registration fees and uniforms. The league supports the families by helping offset roughly half the registration costs of the Memorial Day and All-Star tournaments. Below is a list of fees parents will be required to pay for each tournament: Memorial Day Tournament All-Stars Sectionals All-Stars Regionals All-Stars World Series
$30 $30 $30 TBD
Please note that the league DOES NOT cover travel expenses for any of these tournaments. All travel expenses must be paid by the players’ families or raised independently.
Parents will be required to pay approximately $100 to $125 for their All-Star uniforms. They will receive a custom hat and jersey which they will get to keep. This cost also includes the purchase of matching pants, belt, and socks.
On average, parents can expect to pay a total of $150 - $175 to participate in All-Stars According to strict PONY rules, once official All-Star rosters have been submitted, players may not be replaced except in extreme circumstances. Therefore, all players who commit to play All-Stars for MMYB must understand that quitting or withdrawing from the team during the season, places an extreme burden on their remaining teammates. Please note that if a player withdraws or quits the team, all paid fees will be forfeited.
Parent Conduct Our coaches, All-Stars, their families and friends are direct representatives of the entire Mira Mesa Youth Baseball league. All must understand that it is a PRIVILEGE to represent us.
Spectators are expected to conduct themselves with the utmost respect and dignity at all times. Everyone must exhibit good sportsmanship, teamwork, and a willingness to accept whatever roles they are assigned to support the team. Coaches and parents must uphold the Code of Conduct and refrain from abusive treatment of players, umpires, opposing coaches and players, or tournament officials. Please note that any outbursts from spectators during a PONY tournament can result in the team Manager being ejected from the game and perhaps the tournament. In addition, anyone who violates our league’s Code of Conduct policy is subject to formal review by the MMYB Board of Directors which could directly affect a player’s or their parents’ ability to participate in future seasons.
