2018 Vertfest Clinics: 9AM-3PM Intro to Snowshoeing Description: Learn how to enjoy the winter mountains while avoiding avalanche danger. We’ll take our classroom outside into the beautiful forests of Commonwealth basin. Along the way, we’ll learn the fundamentals of how and where avalanches occur, as well as how to reduce our risk –beginning with the planning process. Learning Objectives: Learn what avalanche terrain is and begin to identify it on maps and on the ground. Comfortably walk in snowshoes Understand how to stay warm and dry in the winter Recognize key “red flags” for avalanche danger Understand the need for training and for companion rescue gear in avalanche terrain

Experience with easy summer hiking Fitness compatible with a 3 to 5 mile hike
Start Time and Place: Check-in from 8AM-8:45 at the NWAC tent at Alpental base (see image). Expected Destination: Commonwealth Basin
