Simon writes.....27th November 2016 Welcome to Advent.....the time we Christians celebrate the light that shines in the darkness.....Jesus, of course, but also his church, his people, you & me! We are called to be light. We are challenged to be people of truth and integrity. This is not always easy in the world today. You may have read that the Oxford Dictionary has chosen post-truth as its word of the year for 2016. But what does this mean? According to the dictionary.... Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. But surely it is more than that! Isn’t the opposite of truth, lie? ie if we are not speaking the truth what we say is a lie! St Paul knew it was important that Timothy should be immersed in truth and he wrote this....2 Timothy 4:1-4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his
appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather round them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. In the light of Advent we need to be people of complete and utter integrity. But we seem to be living in a time when people in various countries are gathering round them ‘leaders’ who say just what they want to hear. People seem to be accepting that ‘truth’ and ‘facts’ are ideas that are passé. People are wanting to be told just what their itching ears want to hear. It is not biblical and it is not of the light and we Christ-followers must learn to discern truth amid the clamour and noise around us.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED......we like to serve refreshments (often of the mulled wine and mince pie type) after the Carol Service. It takes place on Sunday 18th December at 7.30pm in Sint Jan’s kerk, Tervuren.....please, please, please could you offer to do this? It would be greatly appreciated! Sunday December 4th Pot luck lunch in support of street children: Come along to hear from Retrak’s Church liaison officer about the current work of Retrak. We invite you this Christmas season to join in the St Paul’s “singing” events which will include: Carolling at the Christmas Ball - 2 December at 19:00 – 19:45 (minimum of TWO rehearsals) Carolling at the Tervuren Christmas Market – 10 December (Time tbc) For the whole family Leading the congregation at the Christmas Carol Service – 18 December at 19:30 (minimum of FOUR rehearsals including the final rehearsal in St Jan’s ) Rehearsals will be held at the Church Centre, Tervuren: Sunday 27 November at 18:45 – 20:15 Tuesday 29 November at 19:30 – 21:30 Tuesday 6 December 19:30 – 21:30 Sunday, 11 December at 18:45-20:15 Tuesday, 13 December at 19:30-21:30 Sunday 18 December – the day of the Service – at 14:30 – 16:30 at Sint Jan’s Church in Tervuren We recognize that everyone has many commitments so your participation in any of the events would be welcomed.
