Player Eligibility and Check-In: a. All players must first register on the IMLeagues webpage, and join a team to be placed on the team roster. Players MUST be on the team roster to participate in a game. Write-ins will NOT be accepted until the player has registered, and the Sport Supervisor or Program Manager has approved the addition. b. All participants must be current members of the gym/recreational facilities. Non-members wishing to play intramurals must first purchase a membership. Non-student members must be 18 years or older. c. Each player must check-in prior to game time and present their current Duke ID Card. d. A player must be signed-in and checked off on the game sheet before entering the game. e. Players are allowed to compete on only one team; regardless of league classification. In addition, players may compete on only one team within the coed league (when available). This is the only situation in which a player may participate on more than one team within this sport. i. Any player found to be on more than one team will be considered ineligible and suspended for a minimum of one game. Teams risk forfeiting any matches an ineligible player has played in. Again, players are permitted to play on ONE Coed League team and ONE Open League team; this is the ONLY exception. f. Roster additions can be made at any time prior to 4:00pm and up until the final date for roster additions. Please check the Wallyball sport page on IMLeaagues for this information. Following this date only special requests will be accommodated, but the Intramural office must be contacted. g. Coaches: Coaches may be recognized for an intramural team, but MUST be on the team roster and also be checked off and identified by the intramural staff and its officials prior to the start of the game. Number of Players: a. A team may have an unlimited number of players, but it is recommended that teams not exceed more than 8players on the team roster. The IM program reserves the right to only award 8 champion t-shirts at the conclusion of the season. b. A team will consist of a maximum of 3-players on the court at all times; an unlimited number of substitutes is allowed. A substitution may be made after a basket or during any other stoppage of play. c. A team must have a minimum of 2-players to start and finish the game; otherwise the game will be forfeited. d. If a team drops below the minimum requirement of players due to an ejection or injury during the course of the game, then the game is forfeited. The forfeiting team will retain their point total up until that point; the winning team will automatically be awarded with a 1-point positive differential if trailing at the point of forfeit. If ahead on points, the score at the time of forfeit will stand. e. Coed League: A team will consist of 3-players (2 female, 1 male); this ratio cannot be altered during game play. A team may have 2-players to start and finish a game to avoid a forfeit. Teams with 2-players present may have a female to male ratio of (1:1); this is the only other acceptable ratio. Forfeits & Defaults (game score differential): a. The game score differential for all forfeits will be 35-0. A sportsmanship rating of 3.0 will be recorded for the forfeiting team. b. The game score differential for all defaults will be 20-0. A sportsmanship rating of 4.0 will be recorded for the defaulting team. c. Please review the Forfeits, Defaults & Rescheduling Policy for further information. Equipment: a. Numbered pennies are provided for Intramural participants. b. Teams are allowed to wear their own uniforms as long as they are of the same likeness in color and are numbered. c. A men’s ball will be used for both the Open and Coed Leagues. d. Illegal Equipment: No guards, casts or braces of any kind when worn on the elbow, hand, finger, wrist or forearm. No headwear other than a headband. Rubber/cloth (elastic) bands may be used to control hair. No jewelry such as watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces or any other loose accessories will be allowed. Game Information & Scoring: a. Teams must win by 2-points (even if time has expired), but there will be a cap at 40-points. If a third game is needed it shall be played to 15-points or 10-minutes, whichever comes first. Teams must win by 2-points (even if time has expired), but there will be a cap at 21-points.

The clock runs continuously for each game with the exception of a team timeout, official’s timeout and the final 1minute of play. If a team is ahead by 20 or more points with 5-minutes or less remaining in a game, the game is over. If a team is ahead by 15 or more points with 2-minutes or less remaining in a game, the game is over. i. If teams are in a stoppage of the clock situation (1-minute or under), the clock will stop on any made baskets and all dead-ball situations (out-of-bounds, fouls, free-throws, etc.). The clock will restart following the “check” at the top of key and once the first touch has been made by another player following the “inbounding” of the ball to initiate play (see check ball rules below). d. Each team is allowed 2 timeouts per game. Timeouts are 30-seconds in length. e. Normal scoring for basketball games will be used. Each basket scored behind the three point arc is worth 3-points; each basket scored inside the three point arc is worth 2-points. f. Possession of the ball following a made basket is not “make-it, take-it”; possession will alternate following any made basket, or following a missed free throw. g. Starting Possession: Will be determined at the start of the game with a coin flip. “Check Arc”/Change of Possession: a. The ball will be ‘checked’ at the top of the key; the offensive team must ‘check’ the ball to an opposing player prior to each offensive possession to ensure a ready for play. In all situations where there is a dead ball (out of bounds, foul, etc.) the ball will be returned to the top of the key for a check ball. b. Following a check ball, the offensive player must make a pass attempt with the ball to a fellow teammate (this should be considered as if a throw-in/inbounding play). The player with the ball has 5-seconds to pass the ball to a teammate. The offensive player who receives the checked ball may NOT shoot or dribble the ball; they may only pass – this will be considered as if it was an out of bounds situation and the player must “inbound” the ball to initiate play. c. Any defensive players defending the “inbounding” attempt after the checked ball must give the offensive player 3feet of space to “inbound” the ball to a teammate. This should be considered about an arms-length (no less). d. Once the ball has been checked back to the offensive player, the ball is not considered “live” until it has touched another player. Defensive players CANNOT foul the offensive player who the ball was “checked” to. This will be considered as an automatic intentional foul. e. The “check arc” shall be the three point arc. The ball needs be taken past the three point arc by the defensive team on all situations where the ball has been in possession (including shots, blocks and steals) by the offensive team. This includes any shot that hits the rim, the backboard, or misses either completely. f. If the offensive team (the shooting team) rebound their own shot or recover a blocked or stolen ball prior to the ball being checked back past the three point arc by the defensive team, they do NOT have to check the ball out past the three point arc for a legal attempt at the basket. g. If the defensive team fails to “check back” when needed and attempts/converts a shot, the shot and any score will be disallowed; a turnover in possession will occur and be given back to other team at the top of the key. h. Only one foot is needed to touch past the three point arc (while in possession of the ball) for a “check back” to be legal. Only a portion of the foot (not the entire foot) must touch past the three point arc. i. Ball Out of Bounds: The ball is out of bounds at the sides of the court, the end-line, or at the mid-court line; the ball will be put back into play with a “check-ball” at the top of the key. Fouls & Officiating: a. There will be at least one official who is only required to move along the base line. b. Individual player fouls will not be recorded; team fouls will be (see below). Any technical, intentional, or flagrant foul will count as an additional team foul. c. Technical Fouls – 2 free-throws, and possession of the ball. 2 technical fouls on any one player will result in an ejection from the game. If a team or its total members accumulate four (4) technical fouls of any nature during the course of the entire match, the match is immediately forfeited, and the team may be subject to removal from the league following review. d. Intentional Fouls – 2 free-throws, and possession of the ball. Intentional fouls do not carry an ejection unless, in the opinion of the official or IM staff, the foul was flagrant. e. Flagrant Fouls – 2 free-throws, and possession of the ball; player is ejected from the game. i. Any ejected player is suspended for the remainder of that game and their next scheduled game. ii. Any one player receiving 2 ejections during the course of the season will be suspended for the remainder of that sport season. f. Free-Throws will not be rebounded; possession is awarded at the top of the key to the opposing team.
