4-H TRACTOR SAFETY AND CERTIFICATION COURSE
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers
to turn on the light.” - Dumbledore
Did you know that in New York State, farm employees must be 16 years old in order to be hired to operate farm equipment or machinery? Madison County Cornell Cooperative Extension will soon be hosting the 2016 4-H Agriculture & Tractor Safety Certification Program available to 14 and 15 year olds interested in gaining employment on a farm. This seven session course will cover many components of agriculture safety including tractor safety, animal safety, lawn, yard and garden equipment. With the successful completion of this course 14 and 15 year olds are eligible to be hired on a farm. The first session will be held at Morrisville State College, Marshall Hall, Diesel Tech Lab on February 22rd at 6:00pm. This course is offered to teens to help reduce the number of deaths while operating equipment. To achieve this, the knowledge learned must be used wisely. To pass the course participants must attend every session, complete the work book and pass both the written exam and the practical driving test. At the end of the course participants will receive a certificate from the Department of Labor. It is required by law that employers ask for this certificate from a 14 or 15 year old before hiring. The 4-H Tractor Safety and Certification Course class fee will be $20.00 for the manual and printed materials. This program is a cooperative effort of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County, the Madison County FFA Agricultural Programs and Morrisville State College. Sessions will be held at the following Trade Show locations: Morrisville State College, Cazenovia Equipment, Gold Star Feed, Empire Tractor, Kelsey’s Monanfran Farms and Madison Central School. Enrollment is required before the first session which will be held at Morrisville State College on February 22rd from 6:00-9:00pm. 4-H Effective Speaking Workshop On Saturday, January 30, 2016 the 4-H Office held an Effective Speaking Workshop. Dr. Ferrara worked with our 4-Hers on defining their topic and developing a purpose statement. Dr. Heather Stassen-Ferrara is an Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Communication Studies Program at Cazenovia College. We had eleven 4-Hers attend to improve their communication skills. The Public Presentation Program is one of 4-H’s most beneficial and rewarding experiences. Don’t forget to sign up for Madison County 4-H Public Presentation Day on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

What 4-H Means To Me By Shelby Curtis
“You have to accept whatever comes and the only important
thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give.” -Eleanor Roosevelt
4-H is my family, it’s my escape. It’s where I can express myself through my club, my community, my country and my world. 4-H lets me speak through my public speaking, accomplishments and my clubs activities. 4-H is an amazing way for me to challenge myself and strive for something I want to accomplish, at whatever level that is. “Every day is a new day, make something from it!” -Unknown This year I did my 4-H Public Presentation on Wakeboarding. A sport I fell in love with at the age of eight. Now I know it wasn’t my best presentation, but the fact that I challenged myself for the first time creating a PowerPoint presentation was very satisfying to me. When I received my scores back from the judges I was excited, because I knew exactly how to improve my presentation. Next time I am going to push myself to the limits. I am the president of my 4-H club and we are the Shooting Stars 4-H Club. I attended Hamilton Central School where I enjoy tutoring younger students in Spanish, a subject I am very passionate about. Along with many other extra curricular activities, I am currently participating in a bottle drive for my sophomore class ‘18. We are trying to earn money for our senior trip. As president of my 4-H club, I have several goals for the club: I would like to do more hands-on projects, more community service and more helping our youth on the importance of firearm safety. I want to engage in new ideas on improving our club and expanding the enrollment numbers. I want to open up our potions and see what the club can accomplish. Because Trade this isShow 4-H and 4-H means nothing is impossible for myself, my club or anyone else.
