What is Graduate Marietta and where does the money go? Graduate Marietta is an initiative by Marietta City Schools (MCS) “To prepare each of our students, through academic achievement, for college, career, and life success.” The Kiwanis Club of Marietta saw an opportunity to partner w ith M arietta City Schools (MCS) on this initiative. Our club’s focus is on literacy in all its forms including technical and reading literacies as well as nutritional, financial, cultural, and citizenship. Dr. Emily Lembeck, Superintendent of MCS, is our program sponsor. To date, our club’s involvement in this effort:
Has provided 80 laptop computers to deserving students, who met strict criteria, in four graduating classes. We just awarded our fourth group of computers, bringing the total investment in computers, software, security, and internet to approximately $40,000. We want to continue and possibly expand this program.
Has placed a Scholastic Reading Oasis in four Marietta locations to benefit elementary-aged children in support of Reading Literacy. Marietta Kiwanis has spent $23,000 for these Reading Oasis projects with an additional $20,000 provided by Scholastic, making the total investment over $40,000. Approximately 3,500 books are being provided. Ongoing maintenance to replace books (they are free to the students after a period of time) is $6,000 per year.
Has helped provide copies of the U.S. Constitution to all fifth-grade students in Marietta City Schools in observance of Constitution Day in support of Citizenship Literacy at a cost of $750 per year.
Has established a nutritional/health literacy major emphasis to identify ways we can better improve students’ understanding and habits. These efforts are being developed and the costs are being determined at this time.
To fund these and future Graduate Marietta initiatives, Kiwanis raises money both from the community and internally. Internally, Kiwanis members contributed nearly $20,000 this past year. In the community, we support our literacy initiative through sponsorships, as well as specific events such as our Light the Way 5K and Night Golf. From its beginning in 1930 to the present, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta has been a strong service organization, with a special outreach to children in our community.
