Crucial Roles The following roles of the team leader are crucial in setting direction and ensuring that goals are met: 1. Leaders demonstrate commitment to the vision and strategy through their words and actions. Leaders are responsible for ensuring that their team members’ actions and activities are focused to achieve the departmental goals. The way leaders behave, including expressing their concerns or satisfaction with progress, demonstrates their focus on reaching departmental objectives in line with the vision and strategy of the organisation. 2. Leaders ensure that the team members understand their roles in terms of the strategy and goals. It is vital that leaders explain the different roles in their department to ensure that there is no unnecessary overlap or confusion regarding the critical performance areas of staff members. 3. Leaders should understand and consider the financial impact of their strategy, goals and action plans. It is the leader’s responsibility to ensure that the necessary financial control and budget are available to ensure optimisation and completion of the critical departmental goals and actions. 4. Leaders effectively communicate, demonstrate and reinforce behaviour and standards in pursuit of excellence, i.e. the completion of goals. Leaders need to understand that just defining the goals will not necessarily lead to successful completion. They must positively and continuously reinforce the behaviour of staff members to achieve the goals. 5. Leaders recognise and reinforce the importance of team effectiveness. In the modern day working environment, there is a stronger focus on team interaction than on individual activities. Team leaders are responsible to ensure that the team as a whole reaches its goals. The team leader should therefore maximise the integrated functioning of the team to ensure that all set goals are completed successfully. This includes using the correct resources for the job, and getting them to work well together.
