On October 7, 1953, Southside Baptist Church voted to sponsor a mission chapel in the rapidly expanding Lakewood-San Jose area. The first meeting was held in the Lakewood Presbyterian Church on October 17, 1954. A tract of land on which the first building was erected was purchased on October 27, 1954, and Southside Baptist Church began conducting regular services at the mission site on January 2, 1955. Services were held in the first building constructed on April 1, 1956. The building (along with additional World War II barracks) served as the Sanctuary and educational space. The Lakewood-San Jose Chapel was constituted as a church and named San Jose Baptist Church on February 3, 1957, with 196 charter members. The first educational building was dedicated on June 9, 1963. The property for the present-day sanctuary was purchased on May 1, 1964, and the first service was held there on Easter Sunday, 1972. In September, 1974, the Learning Tree was founded as part of the church and a week day preschool program was offered to the community. On October 18, 1981, the current Educational Building (Fellowship Hall and Sunday School classrooms) was dedicated. In 2007, San Jose Baptist Church purchased the Peak property located adjacent to the church. OUR MISSION San Jose Baptist Church values seeing people become followers of Christ, both in our community and around the world. Growing God’s Kingdom, through reaching the unchurched, is central to all we do. The church has an international reach through numerous members whom serve as missionaries throughout the world. Also to this end, the church has made concerted efforts to serve in the mission field: through various short-term mission trips, teaching ESL classes locally, adopting a local Title I school, opening worship space to Jacksonville’s resettled refugee community, and supporting church planters. Canaan Chin Baptist Church In 2005, Doctor Stoney Cem came to Jacksonville after emigrating to the U.S. and spending a year in Boston. The Burmese (Chin) church started its journey with home churches that met every other week. When Pastor Mike Domke met Stoney, San Jose began hosting the home churches because they were outgrowing their space. The Burmese church continued its growth and relationship at San Jose Baptist in 2007, with over 60 members meeting upstairs in the children's building, utilizing a Sunday School room. The Canaan Chin Baptist Church was formed in 2011 and now has some 200 members. They presently meet for worship in our Fellowship Hall at 4pm on Sundays.
Bhutanese Nepali Community Church Indra Koirala pastors the Bhutanese Nepali Community Church. Pastor Indra became involved at San Jose Baptist when he first came to America with his brother. Pastor Indra and Robin began attending San Jose Baptist the very first Sunday after arriving in America. The Bhutanese Nepali Community Church started in 2009 with just 11 people. They immediately experienced significant growth. In 2011, sixty seven people were baptized and became members of the church. But, due to the lack of suitable jobs in Jacksonville, numerous members have moved to states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Iowa, taking the Word of God with them. The Bhutanese Nepali Community Church now has approximately 80 members, and they meet in our Student Building at 11am on Sundays.
Congolese Fellowship The Congolese fellowship, with Pastor Elias Meshack, is the latest congregation to become a part of San Jose’s International Ministry. Pastor Elias began attending San Jose in 2011 when he met Emily Chapman, and she invited him to come to church. In the past year, the Congolese fellowship began here as an effort to minister to the rapidly growing Congolese community in Jacksonville, through the efforts of Pastor Elias and the guidance of Rick Wallis. The Congolese worship in our adult education building (room 207) in their native language at 9am, and then join us for worship where the service is translated into Swahili.
The Ministry of Safaa Hillawi and Elham Taylor In 2008, Safaa and Elham came to Jacksonville from their native Iraq. Prior to coming to the United States, they served one of the largest churches in Baghdad. Coming to America allowed them to escape political and religious oppression. In their first month of being here, God brought them to San Jose and into our lives. Through the years, we have become increasingly aware of their heart for the gospel and the kingdom of God. Since coming to Jacksonville, they have developed an impactful ministry, leading numerous small groups, as they aim to share the gospel with Arabic-speaking people who are far from God.
The Domkes - International Mission Board - Kiev, Ukraine Pastor Mike Domke was a devoted member of the San Jose ministry staff for over 16 years. For some time prior to 2008, Mike and JuliAn had felt that the Lord was leading them toward the mission field. That possibility became a reality when they were assigned to go to Kiev, Ukraine, to serve with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Domke family continues to serve in Kiev as they lead efforts to engage college students (through small groups) and plant churches. Ted and Maria Corby - Immersion Fellowship Ted and Maria have been faithful servants in the ministry of San Jose for an extended period of time. In 2016, they felt that God was calling them to become church planters. In pursuit of that call, they entered into a Church Planting Internship with the Jacksonville Baptist Association. They are progressing toward planting Immersion Fellowship in the Englewood area, sometime in early 2018. San Jose will be Ted and Maria’s Sending Church.
Annette Teague - North American Mission Board - Hamilton, Ontario, Canada In September of this year, Annette Teague began a one-year internship with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. She is serving with the Hamilton Fellowships, church planters in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). She will serve with the McGibbon family, church planters we currently partner with as a Supporting Church. As Annette’s Sending (home) Church, we support her through prayer and provision (financial support).
