What is the Spiritual Impact of Awana? Generation after Generation of Lasting Faith in Christ 60th Celebration In 2010 Awana celebrates 60 years of partnering with churches and parents to produce a lasting Christian faith in children and youth. We thank God that His timeless truth, taught through Awana, changes lives. Awana plans to celebrate throughout the year. Our key 60th events include: • A special kick-off event at Summit 2010, our annual youth ministry conference, April 12 in suburban Chicago. Over 1,000 students and leaders are expected to attend. • A national Awana Ministry Conference simulcast on September 11. • My Church & Awana® Month™, a nationwide opportunity for local churches to celebrate the impact of their Awana ministries, in November.
Our History: Awana was founded in 1950 in Chicago. By 1972, Awana clubs had expanded to 1,000 churches in 46 U.S. states, and our first international club began in Bolivia. In 2000, 10,000 churches were running Awana worldwide. Today we work with 22,000 churches, schools and orphanages from over 100 Christian denominations in over 100 countries. Our Leaders: Our Co-Founder, Art Rorheim, continues to serve Awana at age 91 as our President
Emeritus. A book biography of Art’s life will be released in fall 2010 in conjunction with our 60-year celebration. Jack Eggar leads Awana as President/CEO. Under Jack’s direction, our ministry has experienced its greatest growth. The number of churches running Awana has more than doubled since his appointment in 1999. Jack is the author of Shaping Your Family’s Faith, The Return of a Mighty Church, Great and Mighty Things and Sparky Shines His Light, the first in a series of children’s storybooks.
Overview: Awana helps churches and parents partner to develop spiritually strong children and youth who faithfully follow Jesus Christ. A recent national survey found Awana to be as important to our alumni’s spiritual foundation as all other church activities combined. Among alumni who participated in Awana for at least six years, and whose parents were involved in their spiritual growth, 92.7 percent still attend church at least weekly as adults. Full results of the survey are available at awana.org/alumnistudy.
Our Outreach: Each week, more than 1.5 million children and youth and 250,000 volunteers participate in Awana. Over 12,000 church Awana programs operate in the U.S. and over 10,000 more internationally. (continued on back)
