Students will model understanding through representations of base-ten blocks and counting on or back. Students will learn different ways to write a number. Students will be solving real world multistep word problems through the completion of student tasks. Students will use prior knowledge of basic facts and relationship to solve mentally. Students will understand how to express their knowledge through explaining their thinking using vocabulary terms. Middle of Oct - Students will start Chapter 2 (workbook A) – Addition to 1,000. 203/204 – We are beginning Chapter 1 of our Go Math program. In Chapter 1, students will be strengthening their number concepts. We will be exploring even and odd numbers, place value, expanded form and different ways to represent numbers, and counting patterns within 1,000. Additionally, we will be doing a lot of problem solving with two-digit numbers. During this unit, we will be using manipulatives such as counting cubes, base ten blocks, and counters to help student’s strengthen their number sense. We will be stressing the use of math vocabulary and explaining our answers during math throughout this chapter and over the course of the school year. We will begin Chapter 2 around mid-October. Science: Students are learning how work like a scientist, which is our first Unit (Unit 1). Students will learn how to use inquiry skills, how to use science tools, as well as making observations and inferences. During Unit 1, students will refer to the Scientific Method. Students will refer to the Engineering Design Process throughout the year. The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a problem. Students will refer to this process in Unit 2. English Language Arts: Students started the first unit which focuses on reading narratives and writing personal narratives. They listened to and analyzed various narratives such as Enemy Pie, First Day Jitters, and Queen of the Playground while discussing the elements in each one. They had to provide the evidence for each element within the readings using graphic organizers. Later on in the unit students will analyze the characters and their traits. Students will write a guided writing piece related to a challenge they have faced in their lives. They brainstormed and expanded their ideas while also sharing them with their peers. Their pieces will reflect the various writing styles of authors we are reading in the unit. Social Studies: Students began the school year discussing what a community is and how they could be a responsible person within their classroom community. They collaborated on developing classroom rules and expectations for the upcoming school year. Students discussed consequences for their positive and negative behavior. Hopefully these activities will remain with the students as we continue learning throughout the year.
