English Language Arts/Social Studies: Students are continuing to study non-fiction text features both in class and at home. They have learned to use the non-fiction text features appropriately, so they better comprehend the information they are reading, especially as the texts become more challenging. Students have read leveled texts about the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Ellis Island, and Mount Rushmore. They have been eager to share their prior knowledge as well as gain additional knowledge through their studies. In writing, students have chosen a landmark or monument important to the history of the world. With this, they have been conducting research and collaborating as a group, with students who chose similarly, to answer questions they posed about the topic. The students will continue throughout the unit to compile and organize their research to ultimately create a brochure, article, or essay about their chosen landmark or monument. Math: 201/202 – Students will be starting Chapter 5 will focus on mental math and estimation strategies. Students will use prior knowledge of basic facts and relationship to solve mentally. Students will understand the meaning of sum and difference by constructing part/part/whole bar models. Students will learn multiple strategies to help them solve mental addition and/or subtraction through the use of number bonds to show how the student broke apart the number. Students will learn how to round number to estimate to the nearest ten or hundred and explain why their answer is reasonable. Students will subtract or add using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; illustrate or explain the strategy and reasoning used. Students will use prior knowledge from Chapter 3 to regroup in both addition and subtraction as well as construct bar models to show the number sentence that correlates to the word problem. 203/204 – We are currently in Chapter 4 which focuses on two-digit addition. Students are learning multiple strategies in order to add 2-digit numbers such as breaking apart addends into tens and ones and compensation. Students are learning how to regroup in 2-digit addition and demonstrate conceptual understanding of regrouping using base ten blocks and models. Additionally, students will write equations to represent addition, and find sums for up to 4 addends. Later on in the chapter, students will use addition within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, putting together, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. We will have a Chapter 4 test in a week and a half and then begin Chapter 5 on 2-digit subtraction in mid-December. Happy Holidays! Science: Students are still in their force and motion unit. We will be answering the following question: What causes objects to move? Students will be completing multiple hands-on activities following the Engineering Design Process. Students will be assessed in late December. Art: Second Graders have begun studying the famous artist Henri Matisse. Students will learn about his artwork and complete their own rendition of “painting with scissors.” Reminders for School Year: 1. Any notes for teachers can be sent in your child’s homework folder.
