A Director of Family Life Ministries Perspective By Amy Christman

Last week, June 4-10, fourteen individuals from First Christian Church took part in a mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee with the organization CSM (City Service Mission). Here are some highlights of the challenging, educational, and exciting week: “On Monday, we drove around the city and looked at the historic sites in the city and prayed for the city and the homeless we saw on the streets. During the prayer tour, I just thought I was going to see big houses, fancy cars and a lot of country stars. I did see a little of that but it showed me how many poor and homeless people there are on the streets and Nashville isn’t all that people say it is.” -Coleman Fannin Each afternoon, our group worked with N.I.C.E., a community-based organization dedicated to empowering refugees and immigrants in middle Tennessee through direct social services and educational programs. We assisted with the summer youth camp for five to fourteen year old children. The group included children of many nationalities, all of whom are learning English as their second language. “We each picked a table with two group leaders with subjects math, reading, spelling and art. We each helped students (refugees/immigrants) on the different subjects. They switched after 20 minutes of the subject; then after they learned they had a snack, then after their snack we played a game with them like kickball and building bridges/buildings with popsicle sticks. So, we got to interact and talk/get close to the leaders and different kids there.” -Abbey Greene While in Nashville, our housing site was Eastland Baptist Church. Our group had the special opportunity to get to know our hosts by participating in and helping with their Vacation Bible School. “Each evening we played games with the children of VBS. Then we ate and lastly we all gathered in a class room and listened to a woman named Malida teach us a lesson about God.” -Avery Childs “Tuesday morning, we went to the Community Garden and helped weed. We learned about all the plants, how they all were organic, and were being grown to help the less fortunate get a healthier meal.” -Carter Caron This garden was one of three locations run by the Nashville Food Project who also collects leftover food from area restaurants and distributes it to soup kitchens. In addition to fruits and vegetables, this garden also took care of chickens and bees and works to educate

individuals and families on how to grown their own fresh produce in an urban area. “Wednesday morning, we went to Samaritan Ministries Soup Kitchen. Once there we set up in stations. Some greeted people walking in, some passed out trays and the rest sat and talked. The soup kitchen is a free place to eat for the community. Rev. Watson, the director, mentioned that she has somewhere around 150 people come in a day. It was really eye opening and an overall great experience for our youth.” -Janay Farrow “Thursday morning, we walked around the city of Nashville and talked to homeless people. Each leader had $5 to spend on a homeless person’s needs. My group met a guy named Robert and we bought a newspaper from him then we bought him a sandwich from Subway.” -Sidney Simpson “Friday morning, we visited a day care run by the Catholic ministries. There we were able to clean up the appearance of the classrooms and playground. The youth also delivered snack to the children and helped with cleanup afterwards. Each teacher and the woman over the organization were very appreciative of our willingness and hard work.” -Spencer Brumfield “A new experience I had this week was the different restaurants in the city we went to. I missed the first night (which was Thai food) but I had Indian food and soul food where were both different but surprisingly great.” -Braedon Ward “In our travels to and from our various work sites, we were able to see some of the sights of Nashville. A few times we were able to hang out for a while in one of the many beautiful parks. A personal favorite of mine was the famous replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park!” -Wren Jenkins
