CONTACTS

A Heartfelt Thanks By Donna Dire

The weekend backpack program is celebrating its fourth school year. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of our cafeteria staff (Mr. Elsenheimer and his terrific organizational skills including the magic of always finding the funding.) and Sandy Whipkey who is always ready to hop on board Friday mornings with the loading. Thanks to Mrs. Slogan and her students who assemble those backpacks every week from October through May-this includes all fifty-four back packs. Thanks to the staff at New Freeport Springhill-Ginger Wise and Shirley McDiffitt-who are always ready to step into the distribution role at the drop of a hat. Thanks to Mr. Chuck Rice, at Graysville Elementary, who always provides a helping hand

with the loading and moving of the packets each week. Thanks to the teachers who generously help these packets get to their students every week with a lot of discretion. And finally, a heart full of gratitude to those community agencies that keep the dollars coming that allow the program to exist. Thank you everyone!

“Bee” A Winner The annual West Greene School District Spelling Bee was held on Friday, February 6, 2015. Eighty-two students in grades 5-8 participated. The top three spellers from left to right are: Third Place Danielle Fox, 6th grade; Second Place - Elizabeth Brudnock, 6th grade; and First Place - Hunter Guthrie, 7th grade. Hunter Guthrie, a two-time school champion, will compete in the western regional competition on March 14, 2015 at Robert Morris University.

Back in November, two high school teams and one middle school team began thinking and acting like architects when they registered for the Aspiring Architect Competition, to be held March 19th at Jozart Center for the Arts in California, PA. Each team is responsible for choosing an existing building having historical value that will be renovated into a new and vital use. Additionally, each team must draw a set of scale floor plans, create a written proposal, and construct a scale model of their structure. As a final touch, landscaping will be added to their model building. Once their project is complete, they will present it to the judges at Jozart and be scored in the following areas: Best Overall Project; Most Creative Use of Materials; Best Model, and Best Presentation. We wish them the best of luck.

Congratulations are due to the West Greene Mock Trial team! Despite the delays and snow cancellations, the Mock Trial team was able to compete at the Washington Courthouse on February 23rd and 24th. These hard working students were required to put on a trial, acting as both the prosecution and the defense. Our team competed against Connellsville on the 23rd, prosecuting to the best of their abilities, however falling short of a conviction. On February 24th, West Greene was on the defensive, successfully competing against Frazier, scoring the 2nd highest defense score of the competition! West Greene Mock trial team will also be recognized in May at the Greene County Courthouse for Law Day, receiving, for the third year in a row, the trophy for the first place Mock Trial team in Greene County. Congratulations again Tara Hall, Cole Stockdale, Mikhayla Post, Sarra Zimmerman, Justin Gilbert, and Sam Nefzi. WELL DONE!
