A Warm Welcome
Obedience is the best way to respond to God’s Word
Sermon Discussion Questions Week of July 10, 2016
Getting Started • What were the major points from Sunday’s sermon that you took home with you? • Name one idea that felt new, one that was reinforced, and a question that may have surfaced for you after listening to the message.
Share the Scriptures • Read together Colossians 3, concentrating on Colossians 3:16. • How do you respond to a parent, boss or other authority figure when they admonish you to do the right thing?
Discuss Together
1. Read Chapter 2 of Colossians. Compare and contrast the freedom from regulations with the admonishment to put on the clothes of God? 2. Read each of 3:16’s that have been central to this series. Can you liken each of them to a stop on your spiritual road trip? 3. Draw a heart on a piece of paper. Inside it, write words that indicate what fills your life. Remember, they are the things that get the best of your time, attention and affection. 4. Reflect on Psalm 119:103-105 together. How does God’s Word fill you up? When are you the hungriest for that feeling of fullness? 5. Why do young people frequently have a period when they get away from God and their faithfulness? How can we be encouragers? Revisit the quote that Danny used in his message from Paul David Trip: “Yes, it’s hard to face all of these things. It’s easy to lose your way. It’s tempting to wonder what God is doing, if he cares, and if he hears your prayers. It’s hard to hold on to his promises. It’s hard to stay committed to good spiritual habits. It’s hard not to give in to discouragement and give way to the desire to quit.” 6. By seeking the rules for Holy Living, how are different relationships changed? Spouses, teacher-student, employer-employee, close friends, parent-child, etc. 7. Read together James 1:22-24. Is just reading the Word, or even listening to it, enough? What is the completer step? 8. What is the role of rebellion in the life of a growing Christian?
Prayer | Father God, please keep our focus on You and help each of us to seek Your ways. Guide us in our daily outreach to not just bless the world, but to pause and reflect on the blessings we receive as a result of living lives with Your guidance. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
Renew Your Mind | “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts….Let praise flow from my lips, for you have taught me your decrees. Let my tongue sing about your word, for all your commands are right.” Psalms 119:1-2, 171-172
