2017-2018

Welcome back! I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year. In this course you will use algebra in solving problems and learn concepts that will prepare you for other math courses. You will also learn how algebra and math are used in various real-world applications. You will then be able to apply the mathematics that you learn to your daily activities. Why is this class important? A strong mathematics background is becoming increasingly important in competing for jobs in today’s technologically advanced society. Throughout the year we will be focusing on how math and algebra can be applied to real-world situations and careers you may hold someday. I want you to realize that math is more than just “book work”, it improves your problem solving (which is something we all do every day). We will be doing several projects this year that hopefully will help you to see the importance and usefulness of math. This class is very similar to College Algebra, so it should help prepare those of you who are going on to college. MATERIALS NEEDED ** bring all materials to class every day

    

Pencil Paper Small one subject notebook or composition book for design journal to leave in the classroom Laptop charged and ready Scientific or graphing calculator (Please read the information below.)

You may use a scientific or graphing calculator in this class. There is a limited supply of TI-84 graphics calculator for use in class only. You will NOT be able to take the calculators out of the classroom. You may want to purchase your own for in class and at home use. It would be a wise investment for those of

you going on to college or planning to take BHS calculus. BHS recommends the TI-84 plus SE. It is the calculator that we use in the math and science departments. TI-89 calculators (and above) will not be allowed on tests and quizzes due to the functions they perform.

Graphing calculators will be made available on the laptops at no charge. TEXTBOOKS Textbook will be available online with a student code through any computer with internet access. The textbook will also be available offline through an App on the student’s district computer. If there is a problem with the online book or the App, please contact the high school tech department. EXTRA HELP I will be available to provide extra help during homeroom, before and after school each day. Please come in for extra help as you need it. Don’t get behind! GRADING IN CLASS We will grade some homework assignments in class. Most of these we will “trade and grade”. This has worked well in the past as students receive ‘immediate’ feedback. Final grade totals will not be announced in class. Graded papers will be turned in to the instructor to be resorded. You will need a red pen. There are some in the classroom to use if you don’t have one. EVALUATION 1. tests - 100 points each (3-4 tests each quarter)

2. homework  homework will be assigned every day (most of which can be finished during the class period if time is used wisely in class)  homework will be graded most of the time but NOT every day, however, you will be held accountable for all material on tests and quizzes (Hint: do your assignments and you will do much better on material that is graded)  graded homework will be 10 points a day  it is very important in this class to practice what is taught to prepare for quizzes and tests  late homework will be accepted for half credit until the chapter test is taken, then it’s a zero. (If you don’t have it ready to grade when we grade in class, it will be counted late.)  No name papers will receive a zero and placed on my no name board in the front of the classroom. They will receive a zero until it is claimed. Then they will receive half credit. 3. quizzes – 10-40 points each (normally 1 per chapter) 4. projects - we will do several projects and group work in class to apply concepts 

some will be graded individually, others will be group grades

we will also use CBLs (Calculator Based Laboratories) on some projects

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES / EXPECTATIONS all BHS school policies (absences, tardies, etc.) apply in this class (I will mark you tardy if you are not in the room when the bell rings) be ready to start class when I’m ready to start bring all materials every day when I’m talking, I expect your attention work until finished or until the end of class conduct yourself in a manner that promotes learning by yourself and others

I expect you to stay seated until the bell rings Absolutely no cell phones, headphones or other electronic equipment besides a calculator are allowed in class. Cheating is not tolerated and will result in a zero on that assignment. Students will be allowed a water bottle in class. The bottle must have a lid, be clear, and be leak-proof. Only water will be allowed in the class room.

** There will be a consequence for failure to conduct yourself appropriately. If you are removed from class for a day, you will receive NO CREDIT for what the class does that day. NOTES Students may take notes to follow when doing their homework. Notes may not be used on tests or quizzes in this class. Notes may be done on the computer or in a notebook. Notes are not collected for a grade.

Syllabus routing is listed after the website. www.usd244ks.org (Choose high school, faculty and staff, Gayle Haselhuhn view website). Please go over with your student. Math State Assessment will be given to Sophmores only, in March. Parent Conferences will be held on Monday, Sept. 18th from 3:45 – 7 PM and Wednesday, Sept. 20th from 3:45 – 7 PM. I look forward to meeting you to talk about your student. I am very excited about the new school year. I expect all of my student to do their very best and succeed in this class. My students can expect me to be prepared and ready to help them learn more in the field of mathematics. If you have any questions, please contact me at school at 364-8672 ext. 4200 or e-mail the address listed below. Have a great year!
