PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Wow, I can’t believe that we are in the last month of 2014…where has the time gone?? I hope everyone is having a fabulous December! I know I am eager to enjoy the upcoming holiday season. For Thanksgiving, my family and I traveled to Kentucky for a few days to see the sights. It was exciting to be in the state where our IAAP EFAM event will be held this year. It made me even more excited to go to Louisville in July! Next week, my family will be flying to Orlando to visit Disney World! Seeing this guy…
I hope everyone has enjoyed our chapter meetings for the last half of this year. I really enjoyed hearing Chris Corder speak in November on personalities and how we each have a different one. I’m always well aware that my personality falls in the “I” and “S” category and I’m proud to exhibit the traits that go along with these letters on the assessment. I hope everyone enjoyed discovering your personality type and learning about how we can work together with others who may have a different personality, because we all know that can be a difficult task without the proper training and understanding.

Our December chapter meeting will be held on December 18th in the auditorium. Deborah Boswell will be our speaker and I know that our coordinators are already working on some fun holiday activities, so you don’t want to miss it! As we go into the Christmas season, I hope each and every one of you know how much you mean to me and our chapter. Without your support, we would not be able to provide our monthly meetings and networking events. Please continue to support our activities as we look forward to 2015! Until next month…
makes me happy and makes me look forward to our trip! I will be excited to see all of the Christmas decorations and lights that will be displayed for the holidays. It will be nice to get away from my daily hustle and bustle and enjoy some family time. On October 28th, the Tutwiler Hotel hosted a networking event for our chapter. The chapter members that attended enjoyed a tour of the hotel and appetizers in the Century restaurant afterwards. If you missed it, you missed a great time! Make sure you sign up for our next networking event to join in on the fun! A big thanks to Cheryl James for planning our networking events!
Tis the season

Stay Engaged Patricia Johnson, CAP-OM
Staying engaged can be a hard thing. We answer phones, organize things, manage the office and keep everyone else organized. What we (Administrative Assistants) sometimes don’t do is take the time to learn new skills ourselves. Just because you’ve had a position for a long time and you’re very comfortable, you still need to look for ways to stay engaged with new things. One way to do that is to utilize our IAAP Web Community, which can be found in the IAAP Headquarters website www.iaaphq.org. It’s a great way to stay engaged with current items of interest. I always find that the IAAP Blog located in the Communities tab is a great resource for the curious George in us that wants to see the latest
information. It could be to be to see information on IAAP, general questions others have or you can even ask a question yourself and the answer may come from someone you know or someone who’s just like you but in a whole other state. A second way to learn new things is thru the IAAP magazine OfficePro which is in both digital format via email and/or a mailed paper issue. You can find this thru the IAAP website as well. I have found there articles to be very informative and I refer back to them often. Third, we have our very own Julie Perrine, CAP-OM. Her site, http://www.AllThingsAdmin.com holds a wealth of information on everything from
creating your own career portfolio to training sessions on the latest sources to help Administrative Assistants with technology & productivity. She is very involved so if you send her a note on Facebook or a email don’t be surprised if she answers you. The last thing I will leave you with is http://www.nationalseminarstraining.com/ . All though there is a annual cost, what you get from this site far outweighs the cost. With a paid subscription you have access to free webinars on Microsoft software, career development and leadership tips. They also have seminars in that you can sign up for that are free to you as well with that subscription. Staying engaged doesn’t have to be boring or hard, you just have to explore a little.
LET’S GROW IAAP Darlene Williford, CAP-OM The IAAP motto is “Connect. Learn. Lead. Excel.” But we can’t do it without you. We would like for you to tell others about IAAP. Here’s why; people trust people they know. If IAAP were to contact them out of the blue and say, “We‘re a really viable organization, and we have a lot of resources that you can have at your disposal,” they might join, or they might just ignore the message. But if someone they know and trust tells them why they joined IAAP, what they have found to be valuable, and how membership might be of benefit, they are much more likely to join. The number one reason members cite as the reason they joined is EDUCATION. A membership in IAAP helps you find solutions to work more efficiently and effectively, tackle job challenges, articulate your Page 2
values, and bring solutions to the table, thus becoming a more valuable member of the team. We have access to webinars and a wealth of educational opportunities on a local, regional, and national level. The second reason is NETWORKING. Membership gives you access to more than 15,000 members worldwide; people who can answer your questions, people who have been where you are, people who are where you want to be. You have access to not only personal knowledge but a personal network. Listen to what your coworkers have to say. Are they struggling with something? What kind of aspirations do they have? Share how IAAP has helped you with a challenge. Chances are an IAAP membership could help them, too. Help grow IAAP and reap
the benefits. A growth in membership will yield new opportunities and connections for all members. Survey respondents valued membership at over $11,000 when the services and network components were totaled. But an annual professional membership is only $141 – less than $12/month. Encourage others to try IAAP for themselves. Go to www.iaap-hq.org and look in the JOIN section. They’ll be glad they did!
