The first couple of months as your President have been a whirlwind of activity. After a year of watching and learning from the previous leadership and planning for this year, July 1 finally arrived and I began my term of office. The day after our first meeting of the new fiscal year, I was on a plane headed for Texas for my first International annual meeting. It was an eye-opening experience for me as I attended my first business session as your delegate and then began the process of learning how to lead our chapter. I had very high expectations of how I wanted to accomplish this and many ideas on how to go forward from this point. I talked with leaders of other chapters from all over the world and discovered that our chapter is not unique in the challenges we face concerning recruiting and retaining members, participation in chapter activities and networking, and mentoring each other. I

also learned that one person cannot expect things to change or happen overnight. “It takes a village” and we have a village of 160 members. It takes time, and time is on our side. It takes communication, and we have the tools in place to communicate with each other through our monthly meetings, newsletters, emails, surveys, Yammer, etc. As a member of IAAP and the Alabama Power Chapter, what are your expectations? What is your vision for our chapter? What do YOU want to see accomplished in the upcoming year? I encourage everyone to think about the answers to these questions. We want to hear from you. How can we help you achieve your goals and take pride in your profession, your membership in IAAP and your company? Do you have an idea that we can incorporate into one of our meetings? Do you have a skill you can share to help us plan activities and events? We need to know these things. Help us help you! (Jerry Maguire). When you receive a survey asking for feedback, please

fill it out. These surveys are anonymous and can give us the tools we need in order to grow. If something you are concerned about is not addressed on the survey, please let us know. No idea is too small. If it matters to you, it matters to us. We are more than willing to explore new and different ways to make your IAAP experience an exciting and fulfilling one and then put those plans into action. Your idea may just be the one to ignite a fire in this chapter. This does not mean there is anything wrong with our chapter – on the contrary! Since 2004, this chapter has been under the very capable leadership of many different women and has grown from 27 members to 160 members. They did not accomplish this alone. Let’s continue the tradition of being a Chapter of Excellence and meet all our expectations. I am so excited about what we can accomplish together this year! I know it will be a fantastic one and I am looking forward to hearing all your ideas and putting them to work for you! Wanda

Coffee Anyone ?? If you work in a large organization, chances are that you know all about "silos" - divisions that keep to themselves and rarely share information. For the entrepreneur, silos can also exist between yourself and suppliers, colleagues, and sometimes (heaven forbid), your clients. Without information being shared, the chance for synergy and innovation is greatly reduced while the chance for recreating the wheel (and spinning them too!) is increased. Here's the question: what could you do to encourage the sharing of ideas and information with people you know? Here's some answers that may work for you:

We thank Gwendolyn J. Ekundayo for taking time to come speak with us. Just a few pointers from her meeting: -Hearing and listening are not the same. -Listening is not just letting sound flow past your ear. -Effective listening means

AVERY BOX TOPS CHALLENGE The Alabama Power Chapter of IAAP will be participating in the Avery Box Tops Challenge this year. We are asking BOX that all members take the time to clip Box Tops from the TOPS participating products that you purchase and send them to the Box Tops coordinator. Ask your friends and family to help you collect too. With your help, our chapter has the opportunity to win an educational grant. We are working to determine the school that will benefit the most from our collection. Once a school is chosen, it will be announced. There will be upcoming giveaways for Box Top donations, so start collecting now. For a complete list of participating products, visit http://www.boxtops4education.com/learn/flyers.aspx. Questions? Cucumbers Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day. Lust one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror. It will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes. The chemicals cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!! Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!! Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.
