An Inside Look at Ne w Lightning Coac h Looks To New Coach or m Re gain Championship F For orm First year head coach Edwin Gonzalez remembers the feeling that he and his teammates endured four years ago, when the Lehman College men’s volleyball team advanced to the Molten Final Four in dominating fashion. Gonzalez will rely on his memories, and his experience from that squad, to motivate this year’s men’s volleyball squad in his first season as head coach at Lehman. Gonzalez, a four-year starter for the squad is poised to lead Lehman College back to the upper echelon of the CUNY athletic conference. Entering his first year as men’s coach, Gonzalez led the women’s volleyball team to a 13-12 record, and an appearance in the CUNY conference semifinals. His introduction to the competitive women’s division has enabled him to gain some well needed experience for the rigorous battles that he will endure in the men’s conference. “My experience as the women’s coach will be very useful in my transition from player to coach in the men’s side,” said Gonzalez. “Volleyball is a universal sport, and the same concepts and commitments we expect on the women’s team, I will expect from our men’s squad.”
If Lehman is to repeat its successful ways in volleyball, the Lightning will depend on the leadership of their two seniors, Jacsier Lantigua, and Rafael Valerio. Both Lantigua and Valerio have been a part of the Lightning’s previous success, and are both two allstar caliber veterans that coach Gonzalez will look to provide direction for this very young Lightning squad.
