Village Life in Cambodia—ALWS Awareness Week 2014
Animal Banks Animal Banks supply animals - pigs, goats, chickens or cows - so that poor families can improve their lives by generating an income. It’s just like a money bank but with animals! When the animals have babies, the family has to give one of the animals to another family in the community so the help continues. The animals can be used to sell at the market, not to eat. They also provide manure to make food crops grow strong and healthy and produce as much food for the family as possible. When animals are given, ALWS helps provide families with training in raising the animals so they look after them It's a simple solution that really works—time and time well. again—for the whole community! The best animals are the ones that do not require a lot of food to keep them alive and who have lots of babies!
So let’s look at how a pig bank in Cambodia might work ... These pig banks are for the poorest families in villages, and enable them to work with others to provide for their families. The Lutheran team provides money for sows, and provides the nails for the pigpens. The village people then have to make the pig pens and look after the sows. A boar makes the pig pregnant and they wait for the babies! They usually raise the pigs for 6 months before selling. They feed them kitchen scraps so it doesn’t cost money. When a litter comes (maybe about 10 piglets) – a piglet is given to the owner of the sow, four pigs to the woman who raised the sow, and the rest go to committee members. The owner can then sell the pigs at market for about $90. A great income for a family in Cambodia!
