My name is Annette Simoneau Bliss. I was initiated into the Gamma Chapter of AOII at the

University of Maine, Orono in 1980 and graduated with a BS in Child Development/Family Relations in 1982. Following graduation, I married my college sweetheart, Mark, in July 1982 and moved to Massachusetts. We currently live in Mendon, MA. Our daughter, Alaina, was born in March 1984. Life got in the way and AOII was put on the back burner. So I

was so happy to see that AOII was colonizing at Bryant University, just 30 minutes away from my home. Now was my opportunity to reconnect with AOII. I am the adviser of Philanthropy for Beta Upsilon at Bryant University, and currently serve as Vice President/ Membership Education Chairman in the Rhode Island Alumnae Chapter.

The Beginning of AOII The first chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi’s rich history began at Barnard College in New York City. Barnard was the first college in New York, and one of the first in the nation, where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education that was available to men. Founded in 1889, the college was named after Frederick A.P. Barnard, the tenth president of Columbia College, who argued unsuccessfully for the admission of women to Columbia University. From the very beginning, Barnard was a place that took women seriously and challenged them intellectually. Barnard’s first location was in a small rented brownstone at 343 Madison Avenue. In the fall of 1897, the college moved to its current location in Morningside Heights. The idea for such a place as Barnard was bold for its time and it was in this setting that another bold endeavor developed. Barnard’s “Great and Glorious Class of ‘98” included four particularly amazing women: Stella George Stern (Perry), Jessie Wallace Hughan, Helen St. Clair (Mullan) and Elizabeth Heywood Wyman. These women were destined to leave a great mark both on their college and on a new fraternity they would originate and embrace for their lifetimes. So, intertwined in the great history of Barnard College emerged a grand testament to friendship, scholarship, and service that was to become Alpha Omicron Pi. Stella, Jess, Helen, and Bess became four firm friends determined that their friendship should last a lifetime. In their junior year, on December 23, 1896, the four climbed the stairs in a small gallery of the old Columbia College Library which led to an old and seldom used room. Amid old grey mullioned Gothic windows with broad window seats and with sunlight streaming gently through the windows and snow lightly drifting outside, the four pledged each other. On January 2, 1897, Alpha Omicron Pi was formally organized at the home of Helen St. Clair. Soon afterward, the four pledged AOII’s first initiate to AOII’s Alpha Chapter, Ann Richardson Hall. Over the next 100 years, AOII has added to the ranks 190 collegiate chapters and initiated over 155,000 members. Omicron Chapter (U of Tennessee), chartered on April 14, 1902, as our 4th chapter is the oldest active chapter. AOII has thrived and continued to grow throughout the changing 20th century. Despite several wars, the Great Depression, the women’s suffrage movement and the social unrest of the 1960’s, AOII has continued to hold true to its ideals. Founder Stella Perry once wrote, “that which makes our bond is promise certain of success. Let us follow our ensign devotedly, utterly and bravely. For our purpose cannot fail.”
