Jaunty Snowman Sweatshirt

SUPPLIES

3. Use four strands of floss and work Blanket Stitch along edges of hat and mitten.

Sweatshirt (large enough to accommodate an approx. 18" square design) Fabrics for appliqués Paper-backed fusible web Black embroidery floss Dimensional fabric paint — orange and black Tracing paper

4. For patterns for eyes and mouth, trace eye and coal patterns (page 3) on tracing paper; cut out. 5. For eyes, use a pencil to lightly draw around eye patterns (page 3) on shirt. For mouth, draw around coal pattern six times on shirt with one coal positioned over end of pipe.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wash and dry shirt and fabrics according to paint manufacturer’s recommendations; press. 2. Referring to Fusible Appliqués, use patterns (pages 3-4) to cut appliqués from fabrics. Do not cut out eyes and coal. Remove paper backing and arrange appliqués on shirt; fuse in place.

7. To launder, turn shirt wrong side out and follow web and paint manufacturer’s recommendations; hang to dry.

FUSIBLE APPLIQUÉS (Note: To prevent darker fabrics from showing through, white or light-colored fabrics may need to be lined with fusible interfacing before being fused.) Trace appliqué pattern onto paper side of web. If pattern is a half-pattern (indicated by dashed line on pattern) fold tracing paper in half. Place folded edge of tracing paper along dashed line of the pattern and trace the pattern. Now trace this pattern onto the paper side of the fusible web. Cutting ½" outside drawn shape, cut out web shape. Fuse to wrong side of fabric. Cut out shape along drawn lines. Remove paper backing. EMBROIDERY BASICS BLANKET STITCH: Referring to Fig. 1a, bring needle up at 1; keeping thread below point of needle, take needle down at 2 and bring needle up at 3. Continue as shown in Fig. 1b. 6. (Note: Allow to dry after each paint color.) Follow Painting With Dimensional Paint and use orange paint to paint over edges of nose and to paint detail lines on nose. Use black paint to paint over edges of eyebrows and pipe and to fill in shapes for eyes and mouth.

PAINTING WITH DIMENSIONAL PAINT Turn bottle upside down to fill tip before each use. While painting, clean tip often with a paper towel. If tip becomes clogged, insert a straight pin into opening to unclog. To paint, touch tip to project. Squeezing and moving bottle steadily, apply paint to project, being careful not to flatten paint line. If securing an appliqué, center line of paint to cover raw edge of appliqué. If painting detail lines, center line of paint over transferred line on project or freehand details as desired. To correct a mistake, use a paring knife to gently scrape excess paint from project before it dries. Carefully remove stain with non-acetone nail polish remover on a cotton swab. A mistake may also be camouflaged by incorporating it into the design.
