SWA provided the master plan for the 50-kilometer, man-made Arabian Canal, which is flanked on both sides by a broad corridor of mixed development, including public promenades, gardens, and plazas. The project doubles the waterfront property of Dubai. Tremendous earthwork efforts create a grand canal excavated to sea level to enable a natural flushing system utilizing water from the Arabian Gulf. Microclimate modification was achieved by introducing a network of canals, lakes, wetlands and urban agriculture to the landscape. In addition, the development was gently sloped toward the canal and massing arrangements were built to direct temperature-controlling breezes through the area. Elaborate shading structures are envisioned, and wind exposure is maximized to cool the water and air temperatures, encouraging pedestrian use of the adjacent public areas. SWA Group: www.swagroup.com
