This detailed landscape master plan establishes public promenades and plazas along the 50-kilometer Arabian Canal as well as parks and streetscapes within adjacent mixed-use development. Streets serve as “people places” rather than merely transportation routes for vehicles, with ample shading to limit solar gain and encourage pedestrian use. A network of canals, lakes and wetlands–combined with carefully sculpted topography–guide breezes through the community for enhanced evaporative cooling. Xeriscape and other water conservation methods contribute to the project’s overall sustainability. Picking up from a regional planning effort, SWA provided open space design, grading, conceptual development of quay wall and revetment techniques for the canal edge, and coordination of infrastructure design and sustainable project elements.
