About A Hidden Winnipeg Gem: Century old building finds a new life 618 Arlington Street was originally built as a two story building in 1912 by architect David W.F. Nichols and builder F. Hinds. The building originally housed the Northland Knitting Company. In the 1920's an additional two floors were added to accommodate a growing business. From the 1940'3 through the to 1960's a variety of clothing manufacturers operated out of this space. In 1961 the national Upholstering company set up their operation and were in this space until 1981 when it became home to Ram Wools. In the 1990's the building was used as a self storage facility until, in 2010 current owner John Hunsberger purchased the building. John's vision of transforming this unassuming building into this unique art studio has been a labour of love ever since. 618 ARTlington is a truly unique Art-space created with salvaged, reclaimed, and re-purposed materials. John's vision for the building continues to evolve and grow and has helped to revitalize not only the building but also Winnipeg's West End. While you tour the building, be sure to look carefully, and look up!
