Game Notes 8MAC Players of the Week: Senior OF Matt Eppers and junior RHP Colin Brockhouse were named MAC Player and Pitcher of the Week. Eppers led the team in RBIs (three) and slugging (.667) in three games in Florida last weekend. Brockhouse pitched 4.1 innings against No. 22 Maryland, tallying eight strikeouts while only allowing one hit. He came out of the bullpen in a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning and did not allow a run.
Meanwhile, SS Alex Maloney finished 2016 with hits in 17 of his final 20 games. He opened this season with multiple hits in two of three games last week.
8Series History: This will mark the third straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons that Ball State has made a trip to Coastal Carolina. The Cardinals are 0-12 alltime against the Chanticleers. However, six of the 12 games were decided by one or two runs. 3B Sean Kennedy was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in last year’s 12-5 loss against Coastal. Ball State has only played West Virginia once and came up just short in a 7-6 loss in 2015. The two teams also played in Myrtle Beach that year. This will be the first ever meeting between the Cardinals and George Mason.
8Wins Vs. Ranked Teams: Thanks to an 8-3 win over No. 22 Maryland in the season opener, Ball State has now tallied at least one win over a ranked team in five straight seasons. Below are the wins over ranked programs since 2009: 2/17/17: 8-3 vs. #22 Maryland 3/11/16: 7-1 at #6 LSU 2/28/15: 2-1 vs. #25 Illinois 3/7/14: 10-8 (10) at #22 Kentucky 4/17/13: 5-3 at #19 Indiana 2/20/10: 5-2 at #15 Arkansas 3/20/10: 5-1 at #7 Louisville 4/22/09: 20-8 at #23 Ohio State
8Good Start to the Season: Five Cardinals have reached base safely in all three games – 1B/OF CJ Alexander, SS Alex Maloney, OF Matt Eppers, C/1B Caleb Stayton and C/DH Trent Theisen. Theisen and Maloney both hit above .400 during opening weekend.
8Maloney, Stayton Pick Up Where They Left Off: C/1B Caleb Stayton ended the 2016 season reaching base safely in 20 consecutive games. Last weekend, Stayton reached base safely in all three games.

He was honored with FCA Baseball’s Jerry Kindall Award in January 2017. The 2016 season was another successful one for Ball State as the Cardinals won the MAC West Division title for the second time in three years. championship game. In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 61 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Brad Miller set the mark in 2006 with 76 RBIs. 8Stayton Named Semifinalist for Olson Award: C/1B Caleb Stayton was one of 44 players nationally, and the only one from the MAC, to be named a semifinalist for the 2016 Gregg Olson Award, an annual award presented to college baseball’s breakout player of the year. He finished the 2015 season with a .278 batting average, two home runs and 16 RBIs.
