Pastor’s Pen This past Sunday, I spoke of the need to gather with God’s people for corporate worship. During the message, I took a few minutes to describe the harm we bring to our kids when we skip corporate worship. When we skip church, we teach our children that church is important as long as it does not interfere with something we want more than worshipping God. That image will stay with our children and infect their thinking as they become adults. God, and therefore church, becomes something we use when we really need Him and something we put on a shelf when we feel like we don’t need Him. That kind of thinking starts us on a slippery slope leading to disaster. I want to encourage all of our parents to sit down with their children and discuss the importance of corporate worship and being part of a small group. Make decisions on when you will miss church. Let me give you one example. Mckinzie was playing on a softball team as a young girl. Her team had one tournament that year. They made it to the championship game and the coach told me she understood if Mckinzie couldn’t play. My response probably surprised her. I said, “Coach, is this the only tournament your team will play this year?” When told that was the case, I told her Mckinzie could play on Sunday this one time. We didn’t register Mckinzie for travel teams because they required missing church almost every weekend. In my opinion, missing one time was taking a vacation, missing multiple weekends was lessening the importance of church and God in my family. Parents, take the time to talk with your children about what is truly important.

Take A Load Off Miss Jones had been giving her second-grade students a lesson on science. She had explained about magnets and showed how they would pick up nails and other bits of iron. Now it was question time and she asked, "My name begins with the letter 'M' and I pick up things.
What am I?" A little boy on the front row said, "You're a mother." Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” I was standing on the side of the mountain road in Honduras, looking around the tiny village when I saw a team of mules carrying clay roof shingles used on most homes in Latin America. The road was covered with big rocks, so the mule would put his foot down, but not move another until he found solid ground. As I watched, I wondered: how heavy was the load, how long could he carry it, how long did they live with that kind of life. (see photo on page 4) It reminded me of the poor people of Honduras that are burdened by poverty, but it also reminded me of how we are often burdened by the troubles of this life: disease, a loved one who is sick, marriage problems, a rebellious child, financial problems and work problems. Then there are spiritual problems that weigh us down: unconfessed sin, pride, envy, lust, jealousy, unforgiveness, anger and guilt. Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you …” He invites everyone, but we must choose to accept the invitation. He says “come,” which implies moving from where we are, to where He is. He says, “Take my yoke,” which is an invitation to a relationship. A yoke connects two oxen so that they are side by side, walking together, working together, learning about each other. He invites us to a relationship where we get to know Him. Religions teach us to know about God, but God wants us to know Him, to have a relationship with Him. He says, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” He will not weigh us down with rules, He weighs us down with love and hope and joy and peace! Will you accept this invitation? He is offering rest or peace for your soul. “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7.
