ATM Top Box Protection Black Box Attacks, Fraud, Jackpotting and Skimming Crimes against ATMs continue to rise globally, especially Top Box attacks. Criminals attack the top box to gain access to the electronics inside. They may target the black box to perpetrate fraud, may install malware to skim money, or engage in jackpotting the ATM to immediately access the cash. No matter the reason for the attack, 3SI’s innovative fascia protection detects the attempt to gain entry and acts to stop it.
Black Box attacks originate in the top section or “top box” of the ATM.
Thieves drill holes through the fascia to gain access to the black box to commit fraud, skim user info, install malware or “jackpot” all the cash out of the machine. 3SI’s solution places a monitored skin on all internal fascia surfaces. The skin detects top box intrusion and takes action to stop the crime.
ATM Attack Statistics • A total of 58 black box attacks were reported, up from 15 during 2015, a 287% increase. • ATM related fraud attacks increased by 26%. • Losses due to ATM related fraud attacks were up 2%, total loss of $355 million when compared with 2015. • 147% increase in transaction reversal fraud (All Stats courtesy of EAST)
How 3SI’s Fascia Protection Works Fascia monitoring skin placed on all vulnerable surfaces in ATM top box Any physical intrusion through the ATM’s top box fascia will be detected by breach panels inside the ATM. Intrusion is communicated to a General Control Unit (GCU) in the ATM safe which can, depending on customer specifications and type of attack, do any of the options below:
