THE BEGINNINGS OF THE YAGGY PLANTATION In 1884, Levi Walter Yaggy, traveled west from his home in Chicago to hunt geese in this newly settled part of Kansas. Nearby Hutchinson had been founded just a decade earlier, just before the laying of the tracks across the state for the great SantaFe Railway.
Water, water, everywhere ... While traversing the land which now forms the Yaggy Plantation, Levi beheld the subtle beauty of the surrounding flora and fauna. He watched as workers dug what he soon discovered to be a very shallow well on what was then known as the Thomas Parker Ranch. Astonished to see them reach water within only a few feet, he suspected that the land held immense potential - with its high water table and mile-plus frontage along the Arkansas River. Enchanted by the land’s natural splendor, the unique riverside setting and the prospect of abundant fertility, Levi immediately purchased the entire tract and planted it in catalpa and apple trees. Yaggy Plantation became a landmark serving as a model of success which was soon followed by many others.
The Arkansas River
For just over a mile of its 1,469-mile journey, its gentle waters carve out the Yaggy Plantation’s southern boundary. All along this section, trees, shrubs & native grasses protect its elevated banks on both sides. These banks, and a couple of the river’s small islands, offer excellent campsites with fantastic opportunities to explore and play in the river. With gentle waters seldom much more than a couple feet deep, it’s perfect for a leisurely float down the river on a hot summer’s day.
