AN OPEN LETTER TO THE JEWISH CENTER FAMILY FROM RABBI DANIEL FRIDMAN To my Beloved Jewish Center Family, As this will be the final opportunity that I have the privilege of sharing my thoughts in this space, I thought it might be appropriate to depart from the standard model for something a bit more personal. In the main, I wanted to express two sentiments upon which I have meditated over the past six weeks, as it grew increasingly likely that I would be starting a new position in Teaneck, and that my tenure as Resident Scholar here at our Jewish Center would be coming to a close. First, and certainly foremost, is a boundless sense of gratitude. In any setting, in any context, in any historical period, it is a singular privilege to study and teach Torah. To hold, however gingerly, in one’s own hands, the texts and traditions that stretch back well over three thousand years to Sinai itself, that have been so masterfully interpreted and developed by the Sages of our chain of mesorah, is an experience that inspires, in equal measure, trepidation and yearning. To have had the opportunity to do so, however modestly, at the unparalleled, incomparable Jewish Center, requires a public expression of gratitude. My gratitude begins with the Almighty, who, in perfect parallel to His creation of the world itself, which he did not merely create, but continues to sustain and to nurture, has not only given the Torah, but continues to actively teach the Torah to the Jewish people, מלמד תורה לעמו ישראל. He has guided my every footstep, מכין מצעדי גברand to whatever degree I have succeeded these past nine years, the credit is His alone, אתה חונן לאדם דעת ומלמד לאנוש בינה, for ‘it is You alone who grace humanity with knowledge and insight’. My gratitude extends to Rabbi Yosie Levine, who was my greatest champion, and offered countless hours of guidance and support over the years. In word and deed, he modeled the very image of a rabbi whose concern was always for the dignity of Torah, and whose first priority remained the quiet act of chessed for someone whose needs were so often known only to him. May the Almighty, who perceives that which is revealed and that which is hidden, recompense the Rabbi and Rachel with good health, happiness, and much nachat from their children as they continue their magnificent leadership of this community. The same must be said for all of the devoted, wonderful colleagues, both rabbinic and otherwise, who have been such wonderful partners during my time at The Jewish Center. While space precludes identification by name, you all know who you are, and you have my deepest appreciation and gratitude. Finally, my gratitude resides with each and every member of our precious community. You have participated in the shiurim and classes, you have invited me for meals, you have supported me in difficult times, and, on the other end of life’s emotional spectrum, you embraced Chaya and Eliana with such tenderness and care. And, even in this bittersweet farewell, your characteristic grace has been so deeply appreciated, and your notes expressing good wishes- every single one of them- have touched and humbled us so deeply. I wish to conclude with that second sentiment to which I alluded at the very beginning of this parting letter. It has always seemed to be that a certain dichotomy ran through the very fabric of The Jewish Center. On the one hand, it functions as a full service synagogue which is the spiritual home of so many families, where one can find all of the elements one expects to find in such a setting: Tefillah, Torah study, vibrant and robust chessed committees, and social programming for all demographics. On the other hand, it aspires to something of a broader mission, featuring lectures and armchair discussions which, in aggregate, render it an unofficial think tank for the broader Modern Orthodox community. While some may perceive these two dimensions to be in tension with one another, it is my view that they are mutually beneficial. The synagogue core anchors the think tank element in the real lives of people, ensuring that the ideas discussed are not pie-in-the-sky esoterica, but issues which directly impact people’s spiritual and material lives. Conversely, the think tank feature ensures that the synagogue does not grow overly narrow in focus, and continues to consider the broader issues challenging our community. Day to day inertia and the ever present concerns of our busier than ever digital age exert a profound impact on our minds and spiritual-intellectual lives as well, and without the rich programming The Jewish Center has valued, it is not certain that these questions would continue to be considered altogether. As the Jewish Center closes the book on one century, and opens the page on another, I finish with my humble prayer that the Almighty, who hears the prayer of His people Israel with compassion, שומע תפלת עמך ישראל ברחמיםwill allow this magnificent, unique institution to thrive for years and decades to come. Our Sages have taught us, כל כנסיה שהיא לשם שמים סופה להתקים, an assembly whose intention is for the sake of Heaven, will surely endure (Avot Chapter 4). The Jewish Center, from pulpit to pew, from roof to lower lobby, from reverence, righteousness, and rachmanut to the present day, has always been for the sake of heaven, and so it shall endure. May our Jewish Center continue to serve the dual purpose it has historically served, first and foremost, as בית כנסת to its members, and, in addition, as a spiritual-intellectual capital for the broader Modern Orthodox community. From the other side of the river, I will be watching with enormous pride, the fondest of memories, and great expectations.
