Letter to Parents Dear Parents, We are so thankful for the opportunity to work with your child this year in Awana! Awana is derived from the first letters of “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed”, based on II Timothy 2:15. Awana is a place of learning, faith-building, affirmation, excitement, friendships, and adventure. It is life-changing and a whole lot of unforgettable fun! This handbook will help you understand a little more about how our Awana clubs run and about your role as a parent of an Awana Clubber. You, as a parent, have the responsibility of your child’s spiritual growth and we are here to partner with you in their growth. We encourage you to work with your children in their handbooks on a daily basis as well as having a family devotional time with bible reading and prayer. Remember, the children are the future of our church. If you do not have a church home, we would like to invite you to visit our church. Building Blocks meet at 9:30 with classes for all ages. Worship service starts at 10:30am. Please visit our website for more information about our church, www.milwoodbaptist.com . If you have any questions or concerns about Awana, our church, or about being your child’s spiritual leader we would love to help and answer them. Thank you for taking the time to read this handbook. We look forward to a fantastic year!

Awana Store and Awards Celebration

4:00 pm, 5:00pm

Special Events There are several events Awana has that occur during the year outside of our regular Sunday nights. Some of these events are at our church but some of them are with other Awana Clubs from the surrounding area. Grand Prix - In the fall pinewood derby cars are made at special workshops or at home. The races this year will be on a November 16th. There will be workshops, Pit Parties, prior to the races where Clubbers can get help cutting and building their cars. Kits for the cars can be purchased starting October 12th. More information will be sent out as the date gets closer. Bible Quiz - Occurs in the spring and is for the Truth & Training clubs. Clubbers compete against other area churches on information learned from their handbooks. Win or not they receive a special patch or pin for their uniform. This is an exciting time! Almost like being on a game show! Spark-A-Rama & AwanaGames – In the spring, we compete against area churches playing games we’ve learned at Awana. There will be a couple of practices prior to the event so teams can be formed. More information to come as the date gets closer. Awards Celebration - Come one come all to show how proud we are of all the Awards that were earned during the year.

Clubber Registration, Check-in, and Pickup When your child visits Awana we require that a registration form (or visitor form) be filled out completely and signed by the parent/guardian. This is for the safety of your child and will allow us to contact you in case of an emergency or to inform you of Awana events. The registration form also serves as an activity permission slip that we keep on file for when we do outings other than club night. After the first night your child needs to deposit their dues and Awana GO money in the back of the sanctuary and then take a seat with their club leader to be checked-in. Clubbers earn team points for the following at check-in: Attendance, Handbook, Uniform, Bible, Dues, and Church Attendance. When picking up your child, please go to their club classroom to meet them. We will not release your child from club until an authorized parent/guardian comes to pick them up. Cubbies will be on the first floor, Sparks and T&T Girls on the second floor, and T&T Boys on the third floor. On occasion we will combine clubs for Large Group Time and meet in the sanctuary.

Opening Ceremony Our opening ceremony is a very important part of club night. It sets the tone for the entire evening. In the opening we emphasize: 1. Being on time! We start promptly at 4:10. There may be special rewards for those on time. 2. Respect for the American and Awana Flags 3. Club unity. 4. Announcements that pertain to the entire club. 5. Reverence during prayer time. To achieve these things:   

Clubbers should go sit with their club to check-in and remain seated in the pew talking quietly until the Commander brings them to attention. Leaders should be sitting among those clubbers who are in their group. When the flag salutes are being observed, everyone is at attention. (No moving and no talking)

Handbook Time Handbook time is the Heart of Awana. It consists of personal interaction between individual clubbers and their leader as the clubber recites memory verses and discusses them for comprehension. When sections are completed, the leader signs the handbook, passing the clubber to the next section of the handbook. After certain sections are completed, awards are given to the clubber. Your child has brought home an entrance booklet, which is the first step in Awana Handbook Achievement. You will need to help your child complete this booklet in the next three weeks. Each section is to be completed in one setting. Only two helps per section are allowed, and verse references are to be memorized. When this booklet is finished, your child is eligible to wear an Awana uniform, start a club handbook, and earn awards for achievement. Each clubber has the potential to complete a handbook each year. Encouraging your clubber(s) to study each night for a few minutes will help their progress. We feel that a clubber has the responsibility to pass a section each week. Please take a moment and look through your child’s handbook. You will find many tips for parents that explain what your clubber needs to memorize.

7

Truth & Training books have parent pages (section 0) where you as a parent need to sign before your child can complete the discovery or challenge. If you have any questions please ask any leader!!!

Large Group Time This is a time of Bible Teaching and may include a presentation of the Gospel, singing, object lessons, crafts, Bible quizzing and special guest speakers.

Game Time Game Time offers clubbers the opportunity to participate as team members in physical activities which help develop team spirit, good sportsmanship, coordination skills, and confidence. Except for Cubbies, the games are competitive in nature. Although winning is desirable, leaders are encouraged to give top priority to building and preserving each clubber’s self-esteem and team work. At game time Clubbers play a variety of games on the Awana game circle. We require all clubbers to wear tennis shoes or laced shoes and shorts that are fingertip at length. This is for safety purposes. We want to work with you in providing balanced physical, social, mental and spiritual activities for your child.

Awana Store The Awana store is a tool used for motivating and building enthusiasm in our clubs. Shares help motivate and focus attention on important elements of club. Such as, Club attendance, bringing their Bible to club, displaying positive attitude towards others, completion of sections, wearing uniforms, and bringing friends. Earned shares are exchanged for items in our Awana store. These items are bought using our budget or given as a donation. If you find a great sale and would like to make a donation please do. We will be holding the store four times a year.

Awana Shares (Bucks) Shares need to be given equally in all clubs (at least in Sparks and T&T). Envelopes will be given to each clubber so they can place the shares they earn that night in them. Leaders may decide to tape/staple the envelopes in the back of the clubber’s books. Receiving instant shares adds to the motivation and the clubbers will show them off at home. Shares are to be given as listed: 8

We do not want any child to go without a handbook or uniform due to financial difficulty. There may be used uniforms available in the Awana office or arrangements may be made by contacting the Awana Commander.

Awards Awana awards are earned for handbook sections completed, regular Awana attendance, and regular Church attendance. At our special, end of the year Awards Celebration, book awards for completing an entire handbook are presented, as well as awards for years of accomplishment.

Discipline Discipline is kept on a positive basis as much as possible by encouraging and rewarding good behavior. Awana methods of discipline include the 3-count and 5-count. The 5-count is used to quiet a group of clubbers. As a leader counts out loud to 5, the clubbers and other leaders have time to take their places and become quiet. The 3-count is to bring about the cooperation of an individual. When a clubber does not respond to a warning for bad behavior and it continues, he or she will be pointed out and given a 1-count. If the clubber continues to misbehave, he/she will be removed from the activity to talk with the director/commander (2-count). The clubber will be encouraged to behave and reassured that he/she is loved. If disruptive behavior continues, the child will be taken to his/her parent or parent will be called (3-count). A clubber who has experienced a 3-count must agree to follow the club rules upon return the following week.

Awana Club Rules 1. Club starts at 4:10pm sharp! It will end at 6:10pm. Cubbies should go to their room when they get to club and will be picked up from that room when club is finished. Only parents (or specified adult) will be allowed to pick up a clubber. 2. Respectful language is always expected before, during, and after club. 3. Care and respect should be shown for Church property. 4. Pushing, shoving, and rough-housing are not allowed. 5. Running is allowed only on the Game Circle during certain games, not through the church. 6. Chewing gum and candy should not be brought to club. If it is received at Club, it is to be put in a pocket until club is over. (NO CHEWINGUM!) 7. After every activity, the Commander, Director, or leader in charge will begin counting from one to five. By the time number five is reached, each clubber is expected to be

10

waiting quietly for instructions for the next activity. Leaders and clubbers are taught to respect the “five-count”. 8. Commanders and Directors utilize the “three-count” for individuals not following club behavior standards. If a clubber receives three warnings in one club meeting, he or she will be removed from that evening’s activities. Parents will be notified. 9. Uniforms are to be worn appropriately. They are to be clean. No awards will be given if you are not in uniform. 10. Passing sections is important. A clubber is expected to progressively pass sections (pass a section weekly). 11. HAVE LOTS OF FUN!!!

Volunteering If at any time or at any event you would like to help we would love to have you!! Please talk to the Commander. We really need parents to volunteer at least twice per year. Areas that you can help with include Game Time, Awana Store, and special events.
