additional events and activities for their members. Both the Cut the Carbon Group and Baldernock Community Association are supportive of a local community minibus, so questionnaires are now being circulated in the area to ascertain the uptake of such a facility. It is estimated that the cost of a new eco friendly vehicle could be anywhere in the region of £30 - £70k, so it's essential that full use is made of any local community transport scheme. Dougie Peddie, from Balmore, would be interested to hear your views on such a scheme and welcome any specialist knowledge anyone has on electric, bio diesel or hybrid engine vehicles. Dougie can be contacted on 01360 622369 or email him at

Planning—Summerston Charlie Frize from Luddon Contruction gave a presentation with Keith Woods who described the proposals to landscape the infill site at Summerston Farm and restore the land for agricultural use. Since the present artificial mounds are steep and unstable, they will be landscaped to produce gentler slopes to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Subsequently 2 metres of subsoil and topsoil will be added to reinstate grazing and arable land. Ecological and hydrological surveys of the area have been carried out to assess the impact of the proposed landscaping works. Reassurances were given that loss of biodiversity will be minimised and that the flood capacity for the rivers Kelvin and Allander will be maintained. Members of the community raised concerns over the increased levels of heavy traffic on the roads over the 5 year period of this project, as well as proximity of the works to the world heritage site of the Antonine Wall. Charlie Frize responded to these concerns and welcomed any future enquiries relating to the project to be directed to the offices of Luddon Construction on Balmore Road.
4. Cut the Carbon update Alison Hazell, Project Manager of the Climate Challenge Funded project, presented an update on activities to date and reminded the community that she and Lynnda Wardle are now both available to carry out Home Energy Surveys (these are free and take around 20 minutes to complete). In addition, they are offering a Carbon Footprint survey to those interested in saving energy and making carbon reductions in their lifestyles. More information in CtC section of the newsletter. 6. Secretary’s Report Professional Indemnity Insurance for the Climate Challenge Project staff has been put in place.
7. School matters Niall Campbell, the chair of the BPS Parent Council delivered a report on the campaign to keep the school open and described the consultation process over the last 18 months. Although any decision to close the school has been postponed, there is still no guarantee that it has a secure future, despite considerations of the negative effects on the local community. The Parent Council has given some consideration to the proposal to replace the portakabin with a new energy efficient building which could be used as a resource by the rest of the community and this long term option seems preferable to the short term solution of replacing it with another portakabin.
