HEAD COACH
MIKE FLECK 18TH SEASON AS HEAD COACH ALMA MATER: BALL STATE ‘93 EXPERIENCE
1998-Present: Head Men’s Golf Coach at Ball State 1994-98: Head Golf Professional at Hickory Hills Golf Course in Farmland, Ind. 1993-94: Assistant Men’s Golf Coach at Ball State 2010-2011: MAC Coach of the Year Led Ball State to the 2013 NCAA Championships
10
Mike Fleck, who was a member of the Ball State University men’s golf team from 1988 through 1992, was named the third head coach in the program’s history Aug. 20, 1998. He replaced Earl Yestingsmeier, who was Ball State’s head coach for the previous 36 years. The 2014-15 season was Fleck’s 17th leading the Cardinals. His teams have won 16 tournament titles, most recently the MidAmerican Match Play in February 2014. The Cardinals have won at least one tournament in six of the past seven years. Two of those wins came during a 201213 season that was one of Fleck’s finest in Muncie. The Cardinals competed in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991 and advanced in a playoff out of the Pullman Regional to reach the NCAA Nationals for the first time since 1986. That year’s team, ranked as high as No. 27 in the nation by Golfweek, claimed tournament titles at the Firestone Invitational and Pinehurst Intercollegiate in addition to runner-up finishes at the Pinetree Intercollegiate and the Mid-American Match Play. The win at Firstone was the second for the Cardinals under Fleck, as the team also won there in 2006. His teams have won Ball State’s own Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational a total of six times. While 2012-13 marked Ball State’s return to the NCAA tournament as a team, Fleck previously coached three individual NCAA Regional participants — Jamie Broce in 1999, Eric Steger in 2011 and Tyler Merkel in 2012. He added another in 2015 when Johnny Watts qualified for the Ball State-hosted Noblesville Regional by winning the MAC Championships. Watts became the first non-Kent State golfer to win the MAC since 2008 and the first
freshman to win the league since 2005. He was the first Ball State player to claim the title since 1997 and just the third ever. Fleck was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year for the 2010-11 season after a year that included a win at the Yestingsmeier and a second-place finish at the MAC Championships. He has had 18 All-MAC selections at Ball State, and the Cardinals’ three in 2012-13 — Merkel on the first team plus Joe Gasser and Alex Stinson on the second team — marked the most for the program since 1982. He also coached Broce, an All-American and the MAC Golfer of the Year, in his first year on the job in 1998-99. In addition to the on-course success, Ball State men’s golfers have been named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars on 33 occasions under Fleck’s watch. In 201213, Ball State tied for the most All-America Scholars in the country with four — Gasser, Tony Lazzara, Merkel and Stinson. In 2005-06, Ball State was the only school in the nation with five selections -- Brandon Boomsma, Patrick Wilkes-Krier, Wayne Denger, C.D. Hockersmith and Andy Skillman. Additionally, Fleck has had 20 Academic All-MAC selections and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (Broce in 1999 and Dan Witt in 2002). In 2012-13, Ball State accounted for four of the seven spots on the Academic All-MAC Team — the most in league history under the current selection format — with Gasser, Lazzara, Merkel and Stinson. Fleck, who graduated from Ball State in 1993, served as an assistant coach with the Cardinals for the 1993-94 season. He then became the head pro at Hickory Hills Golf Club in Farmland, Ind., for four years before returning to lead the men’s golf program at his alma mater. TOURNAMENT TITLES

ASSISTANT COACH
T.J. CARPENTER EXPERIENCE: 3 YEARS ALMA MATER: BALL STATE ‘12 TJ Carpenter, who played for the Cardinals for four years, rejoined the Ball State men’s golf staff as an assistant coach in the spring of 2016. Carpenter previously served as graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for the Cardinals. In 2012-13, his first year on staff, he helped guide Ball State to an appearance at the NCAA Nationals in Atlanta. It was the Cardinals’ first trip to Nationals since 1986. A native of Bourbon, Ind., Carpenter capped his playing career by earning Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America honors as a senior. He posted a tournament victory that season by tying for medalist honors at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational hosted by Air Force. Carpenter completed his senior season with a career-best 75.20 stroke average and logged three of his seven career top20 finishes. As a standout at Triton High School in Indiana, Carpenter became the first golfer in the history of the Marshall County Championships to win three straight titles. He was a two-time sectional medalist who earned all-state honors and qualified for the Indiana state championships as a senior. Carpenter completed his undergraduate studies at Ball State in 2012.
*Corey Ziedonis served as Ball State’s graduate assistant coach through the fall semester before accepting an assistant coaching position at the University of Virginia.

HEAD COACH
KATHERINE
MOWAT 12TH SEASON AS HEAD COACH ALMA MATER: LOUISVILLE ‘01 Katherine Mowat, who was named the head women’s golf coach at Ball State University Aug. 2, 2004, completed her 11th season at the helm of the program in 2014-15. Mowat has been named the MidAmerican Conference Coach of the Year twice in the past six seasons, claiming the honor in 2010 and 2013. She has led the Cardinals to 14 tournament titles during her tenure, including a program record-matching four victories during the 2012-13 season. Her 2007-08 team also won four tournaments, while her 2008-09 squad won three times. Mowat has guided Ball Sate to top-3 finishes at the MAC Championships in three of the past six years, including runner-up showings in 2010 and 2012. The secondplace finish in 2010 was the first ever for the Cardinals at the MAC Championships and came in the same year Mowat became the program’s first league coach of the year. Ball State’s Jenna Hague won the individual title at the 2012 conference championships, joining Katie Sundberg from 2005 as Mowat-coached players to
12
win MAC individual medalist honors. Mowat has tutored Hague (2012, 2013 and 2014), Brittany Kelly (2009, 2010 and 2011), Kirsty O’Connor (2008), Kallie Harrison (2006) and Sundberg (2005) to all-conference honors, and she has also coached six MAC All-Tournament selections. Hague (2014) and Kelly (2011) were each selected to compete as individuals in the NCAA Regionals. “Building this program has been an enjoyable experience,” Mowat says. “To be able to mentor female student-athletes at a great place like Ball State has been a pleasure. The young women in this program know what is necessary to be successful as a student-athlete. We have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but we have a strong foundation of golfers and are looking forward to the challenge of winning a Mid-American Conference Championship.” Mowat’s student-athletes have also been recognized numerous times for their character and academic excellence. Sarah Westaway (2014) and O’Connor (2010) each received the MAC Sportswoman of the Year Award, while Autumn Duke was honored with the Women’s Golf Coaches Association’s Kim Moore Spirit Award in 2013. Mowat’s teams have had at least three Women’s Golf Coaches Association AllAmerica Scholars in each of the past nine years, including five in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2012-13. The five selections in 2012-13 were the most by any Division I program. Ball State has ranked among the top 25 nationally three times in the NGCA rankings of GPAs for women’s college programs. The Cardinals ranked 21st for 2009-10 and 22nd for 2005-06 at 3.549 both years. They were 21st in 2012-13 at 3.612. “We want student-athletes to have a great experience while here at Ball State,” Mowat says. “It is important for us to be competitive, but academic success is the No. 1 priority. We have a program of young women who want to do well academically and athletically, and we are constantly striving for improvement and excellence in both areas. The academic support studentathletes receive at Ball State is outstanding, and we make a conscious effort to recruit great students who are great golfers.” Mowat came to Ball State as the school’s head coach after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi. While at Mississippi, the Lady Rebels made back-to-back NCAA Tournament
appearances in 2003 and 2004 under the guidance of Mowat and Ole Miss head coach Meghan Bolger. As a team, Ole Miss registered six top-five finishes in 200304. The Lady Rebels placed first in the Waterlefe Invitational for the school’s first tournament title since the 2001-02 season. In addition, Mowat helped tutor former Ole Miss golfer Bernadette Luse, who qualified for the 2005 LPGA Tour and won the 2008 Golf Channel’s Big Break. In her final two collegiate seasons at Louisville, Mowat earned All-Conference USA accolades and was named to the league’s all-tournament team. She captured low-medalist honors at the 2000 conference meet and followed that performance by helping her team qualify for an NCAA Regional in 2001. In addition to playing, Mowat was highly successful in the classroom. In 2001, she was named to the NGCA All-America Scholar Team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team. A 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, Mowat was honored as a Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient plus was named to C-USA’s Honor Roll and Louisville’s Dean’s List. Mowat captured first-place honors in the Indiana Women’s Golf Association Mid-Am Championship in 2006 and again in 2007. She also placed second at the 2002 Tennessee Women’s Open in Dixon, Tenn. She competed in the 2002 Ontario Women’s Amateur and Canadian Women’s Amateur, finishing in the Top 20 of both tournaments. TOURNAMENT TITLES

Ball State began as a private normal school in 1899. Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the Ball brothers, a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918. The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property. Ball State has seven academic colleges and a graduate school with over 150 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management. 22
