Storylines 8Ball State has won seven consecutive home openers by an average of 16.1 points. 8Senior DE Anthony Winbush was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4 after posting personal highs in sacks (3.0) and tackles (seven). His three sacks were the most by any player in the nation last weekend. Winbush was part of a Ball State defense that held Illinois to 216 yards of total offense, almost 100 yards below its 2016 average. 8This is the first ever meeting between the two programs. UAB did not field a team in 2015 and 2016. This is the first of two games against a Conference USA opponent. Ball State will travel to 2016 C-USA champion Western Kentucky later this month. 8With his 204 yards passing at Illinois, junior QB Riley Neal became the fifth Cardinal to reach 5,000 career passing yards. Neal currently has 5,021 passing yards. Right above Neal on Ball State’s all-time passing list are Talmadge Hill (5,902 yards, 2000-03) and current head coach Mike Neu (6,271, 1990-93). Recent Cardinal Keith Wenning (2010-13) holds the record with 11,402 yards. See page three for complete top-10 list. 8Sixteen true freshmen or redshirt freshmen saw action in last weekend’s opener. S Bryce Cosby, TE Nolan Givan and OL Kaleb Slaven were in the starting lineup. Givan notched the team’s first touchdown of the year while Cosby registered the team’s first interception.

2017 Ball State Cardinals Football

Game #2 Chirps TEAM YEAR TWO UNDER COACH NEU • This is year two for Ball State under head coach Mike Neu. He is one of 21 FBS head coaches who is coaching at his alma mater. The only change on the coaching staff is the addition of David Elson as defensive coordinator. Elson served as the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2003-09 and spent the 2016 season as Western Illinois’ defensive coordinator. TWO ALL-MAC PLAYERS RETURN • Of the four Ball State players who earned All-MAC accolades in 2016, two return to lead the Cardinals this season – junior RB James Gilbert and senior DE Anthony Winbush. Gilbert was a first team selection while Winbush was honored on the third team. HIGH PRAISE FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS • Ball State has 38 true freshmen listed on its opeing week roster. The incoming class was rated the second highest in the MAC by 247Sports. Assistant coach Chevis Jackson was named 247Sports’ MAC Recruiter of the Year as he helped the Cardinals sign eight recruits from the state of Georgia. NOT MUCH YELLOW ON THE FIELD • In 2016, Ball State led the MAC and ranked fifth nationally in both fewest penalty yards per game (35.5) and fewest penalties per game (4.0). LOOKING TO GO BOWLING • Ball State aims to return to the bowl scene this fall. The Cardinals went to the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg following the 2012 season and the GoDaddy Bowl after the 2013 campaign. However, Ball State fell short of bowl eligibility each of the last three seasons. 2017 TEAM CAPTAINS • The 2017 team captains were named earlier this summer. They are senior WR Jordan Hogue, senior OL Vinnie Palazeti,

sophomore LB Jacob White and senior DL Kevin Willis. RED BIRD RIVALRY • Beginning this fall, Ball State and Miami will once again play every season as the schools have been granted rivalry status by the Mid-American Conference. The teams have agreed to play for the ‘Red Bird Rivalry’ trophy. The mascots of both schools are red birds. Ball State has been known as the Cardinals since 1927. Miami adopted the RedHawks moniker in 1997. The rivalry between the schools dates to 1931. BALL STATE IN THE NFL • Following NFL preseason cuts, WR Willie Snead IV (New Orleans Saints) was the only former Cardinal to make an active roster. Other former Ball State players who were attempting to make an NFL roster were WR KeVonn Mabon (Tennessee Titans), OL Kitt O’Brien (Cleveland Browns) and S Aaron Taylor (Green Bay Packers).

OFFENSE GILBERT ON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST • Junior RB James Gilbert was one of two MAC players to be named to the initial Maxwell Award watch list. The award is presented annually to college football’s player of the year. Gilbert averaged 111 rushing yards per game in 2016, which ranked second in the Mid-American Conference and 22nd nationally. He piled up 1,332 rushing yards last fall, the fourth most in a single season by a Ball State player. MILLER MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT • Sophomore WR Riley Miller was awarded a scholarship during the latter stages of preseason camp. He proved his worth right away in the opener at Illinois as he led all players in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (86). LOTS OF EXPERIENCE AT QB AND RB … • The Cardinals return both quarterbacks who took snaps last year (junior Riley Neal and senior Jack Milas) as well as five of their six top rushers. RB James Gilbert, Neal and RB Darian Green combined for 2,183 rushing yards in 2016.

with the Tennessee Titans. Mabon left Ball State as the program’s leader in career receptions (244). Junior WR Corey Lacanaria is the team’s top returning pass catcher. He tallied 33 receptions for 341 yards a year ago. RUN CARDINALS, RUN! • Ball State averaged 220 yards rushing per game in 2016, good enough for the third best average in the MAC. It was also the most rushing yards per game for the Cardinals since the 1978 season (238.6 ypg). PALAZETI ON WUERRFEL TROPHY WATCH LIST • Senior OL Vinnie Palazeti was recently announced as a candidate for the 2017 Wuerrfel Trophy. Palazeti, one of this year’s team captains, has made 18 career starts on the offensive line. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy Winner, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service”. RED ZONE FOCUS • Much of preseason camp was focused on red zone success. The Cardinals ranked fourth in the MAC in red zone opportunities last year, but ninth out of 12 teams in red zone percentage (78.2). Ball State missed on a league-high 12 chances in 2016.

… THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE AT WR • Ball State lost more than 70 percent of its production at wide receiver from last year’s stats, which includes WR KeVonn Mabon who participated in the NFL preseason

The sophomore finished with a teamhigh nine tackles against the Illini. ONE GAME, ONE INTERCEPTION • S Bryce Cosby was the only true freshman in the starting lineup in the season opener at Illinois. He came through with a highlight reel one-handed interception in the fourth quarter against the Illini. FRESH FACES AT LINEBACKER • Ball State is one of four FBS programs that featured zero career linebacker starts on its rotser heading into the 2017 season. The other schools are Kansas State, Old Dominion and UNLV. The three starters from last year – Zack Ryan, Aaron Taylor and Sean Wiggins – combined for 96 starts in their Ball State careers. Wiggins was an All-MAC third team selection last fall.

He put an exclamation point on his 2016 season with a career-high 2.5 sacks in the finale at Miami. YOUNG UNIT WITH NEW DC • New defensive coordinator David Elson will be working with a lot of fresh faces on that side of the ball this year. Walton ranked fourth in the league in passes defended (14) last year. 4TH DOWN MAGIC • The Cardinals stopped 13 of 17 fourth down attempts by the opposition last season, including three stops in the win at Buffalo on Oct. 15. NEW FACES IN THE PUNTING GAME • For the first time since 2014, the Cardinals will have new faces fill their punter and long snapper roles. Kyle Schmidt served as the punter for the previous four years and averaged 41.0 yards per punt, which ranks third in the Ball State record book. Nick Traub held down the long snapping duties from 2014-16. HAGEE AIMING FOR PAT RECORD • Junior K Morgan Hagee has made 57 consecutive PATs, which ranks second in

2017 Ball State Cardinals Football

Last Week at Illinois (Sept. 2, 2017) Football Drops Heartbreaking Opener at Illinois CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- For most of Saturday’s football season opener at Illinois, things pretty much went according to script for Ball State. The Cardinals (0-1) controlled the ball on offense and let their young defense fly around and make plays. It added up to a 21-16 lead against their Big Ten opponent entering the final minutes. But a big Illinois punt return set up the goahead touchdown with 2:06 to play, and the Illini (1-0) blocked a 54-yard field goal attempt on the final play to escape with a 24-21 victory at Memorial Stadium. “My hats off to Illinois; they played for four quarters,” Ball State coach Mike Neu said. “There’s plenty of blame to go around, but we have to be able to finish on the road against a Big Ten opponent, and we weren’t able to do that. We had positive things happen for us today, but again it comes down to us being able to finish when we have an opportunity.” Ball State maintained possession for more than 36 minutes, converted 12 of its first 16 third downs and out-gained Illinois, 375-216. The Illini managed just 76 yards of offense after halftime, including negative yardage during a dominant third quarter for Ball State. The Cardinals turned a 16-7 halftime deficit into a 21-16 lead with third-quarter scoring drives of 15 and 13 plays. The 15-play touchdown drive was the second of the day for Ball State, with both surpassing the team’s longest touchdown drive from a year ago. BSU ran the ball on 12 of its first 15 plays of the second half, capping its opening drive with a 3-yard run from Malik Dunner to pull within 16-14. The Cardinals forced a threeand-out on the ensuing Illinois possession and went back to work. Junior quarterback Riley Neal led Ball State right back down the field, hitting two third-down passes to his old Yorktown High School teammate Riley Miller and converting another one with his legs. All-MAC first team running back James Gilbert then ran 3 yards around the end to give the Cardinals the lead for the second time at 21-16. But as strong as the Ball State offense looked for most of the third quarter, the Cardinals began to stall out down the stretch. Even so, the defense kept the Cardinals out in front. All-MAC defensive end Anthony Winbush was inches away from getting to the quarterback through the first two and a half quarters, and he started to impose his will late in the third. Winbush sacked Illinois quarterback Chayce Crouch on three straight passing attempts over two possessions. His plays forced punts on both of those drives, even taking Illinois out of field goal range on the second one after the Illini moved the ball inside the Ball State 25-yard line following an interception. “When you have a guy like Anthony – 6 –

Scoring Summary

DE Anthony Winbush

Winbush on your football team, that’s not a surprise to us because of the way he played and performed and showed up every day during training camp,” Neu said. “His hard work is paying off for him, and I think that’s to be expected out of a guy like him. He brings his best in critical moments, and I thought our defensive line overall did a very solid job today.” The Ball State stop after the third-quarter turnover was one of three straight possessions in which the Cardinals either forced a turnover (an interception from freshman safety Bryce Cosby) or stood up to stop a drive in their own territory. But doing it a fourth time was too much to ask. After Ball State failed to move the ball near midfield, the Cardinals were forced to punt with just less than four minutes to play. An Illinois team that couldn’t move the ball offensively then got its biggest play of the day on special teams. Mike Dudek returned Nathan Snyder’s 38yard punt 52 yards the other direction to set Illinois up at the BSU 35-yard line. The Illini scored four plays later on a 1-yard run from Mike Epstein that followed a 25-yard hookup from Crouch to Malik Turner. Ball State had one final chance, needing to go 75 yards in the final two minutes. The Cardinals moved the ball to the Illinois 30yard line before a sack and a holding penalty left them needing a 54-yard field goal from Morgan Hagee on the final play to force overtime. Jamal Milan flew in to block the kick for Illinois as time expired. “We came here with the mindset to win the football game,” Neu said. “That’s the way we coach the game, and that’s the way we play. The game is always a game of inches. There are critical moments in each and every quarter; there are critical moments in each and every series.”

2017 Ball State Cardinals Football

Head Coach Mike Neu 2nd season at Ball State | 8th season as a head coach (including arena league) 16th season as a football coach @BSUCoachNeu Hometown: Indianapolis, Ind. Alma Mater: Ball State ’94 Family: wife Charmin … three children – Graycen, Carson and Chase One of Ball State University’s very own, Mike Neu, is now in his second season as the Cardinals head coach. Neu played collegiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year. “We are delighted to have Mike as our head football coach,” Ball State Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. “His football expertise, leadership traits and passion for Ball State are qualities that our studentathletes and fans will embrace.” Neu has more than 15 years of coaching experience with stops in the National Football League (NFL), Division I FBS football and the arena leagues. Before returning to Ball State, Neu served two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guidance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and completions (428). Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC championship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory. Neu played professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League (AFL) from 1995-97 before beginning his coaching career in 1998 with the AFL’s Nashville Kats. In 2000, Neu was named head coach for the first time as he took over the Arena Football 2’s (AF2) Augusta Stallions. He led that organization to a conference title in 2000 with a 14-4 record – 9 –

and was named the AF2 Coach of the Year. In 2001 and 2002, Neu worked with the AFL’s Carolina Cobras. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to head coach in 2002. During his stint as head coach, Neu led the team to the quarterfinals of the AFL playoffs, including the team’s first-ever playoff win. Neu then spent four years as head coach of the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo. There, he compiled a 33-31 record and earned 2004 AFL Coach of the Year honors. During his first season at the helm, Neu led the team to a franchise-best 11-5 record, a division title and a playoff berth. From 2008-12, Neu worked on the New Orleans Saints’ player personnel staff. He then spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Tulane as the quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Neu helped guide Tulane to a 7-6 overall record and its first postseason appearance in 11 years – the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Neu received his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Ball State in 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 1994 season. He was inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen (16), and two sons, Carson (15) and Chase (7).
