Vacation Bible School

June 5th – 9th Craig Barnes wrote an article entitled “Easter in an Age of Kids, 4 years – 6th Grade Terror,” a number of years ago. He points out that Easter is both good new and also terrifying news. It is good news that Jesus came back from the dead. It is terrifying news because Easter confronts us with the awful reality of death. The biblical accounts of the crucifixion stress that many people watched it from a distance. They wanted to see what would happen but they didn’t want to get too close. That’s how most of us handle death – by keeping it at arm’s length. People avoid going to funerals if possible. Some people are unwilling to even prearrange their funeral for that would mean that would have to at least concede that death is approaching. There are a lot of businesses where we may stop in and browse around, but a funeral home is not one of those places. No one stops in to just “look around.” We work out and lose weight and National Goal $70 Million lower our cholesterol and we try to be careful so that death won’t come Our Church Goal $10,000 too close to us. But sometimes death comes and knocks at our door. Received to date $2,983 Other times death breaks the door down and comes barging into the Special offering envelopes living room whether we like it or not. The writer of Hebrews tells us, “It can be found in each pew. is appointed for man to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). I’ve said many times, death is an appointment almost no one makes, but everybody keeps. APRIL 16, 2017 While Hebrews 9:27 may seem like a startling declaration, there Sunday School 277 really is incredibly good news tucked away in this verse. Really? In a Morning Worship 509 verse that talks about death and judgment there is good news? Yes, Tithes/Offerings $15,602 there really is good news here. The verse says, “it is appointed for man to die once.” Where is the good news you say? The Bible tells us that there are two deaths: a physical death, and for those who reject Christ, an eternal death. But it is only appointed for us to die once, speaking of physical death. Unless the rapture comes first, we all must face physical death, but no one must incur eternal death. Jesus Christ died on the cross and He rose from the grave so that those who trust in Him by faith will not face the second death (Revelation 20:6, 21:8). It is only appointed for people to die once, not twice. No one has to face or fear the second death if they will place their faith in Jesus for salvation. Jesus is willing to save all who are willing to believe. Are you certain that you have trusted Jesus as your Savior and committed your life to Him as Lord? If not, why don’t you do that now. If you are certain you know the Lord, who do you know who is lost? Will you commit to pray for that person daily to be saved? Will you be a willing messenger to share the gospel with them? No one has to experience the second death, but all who refuse Christ will die twice. Let’s pray that lost people will have ears to hear and faith to believe, and let’s share the gospel because “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).
