Southeast Family, I am writing this note on June 1, 2017, the day that marks two years that I’ve had the honor of serving as pastor of SEBC. The last 24 months have been a bit of a whirlwind. We’ve experienced the joy of celebrating with those whom God has brought to be a part of our church family. It has been most exciting to see people who were lost come to faith in Jesus; to welcome them into our church family and also into the family of God. We’ve also experienced the pain of seeing some drop out of church or go worship elsewhere. Together we’ve watched couples welcome new babies into their family, and we’ve grieved with families who had to bid a farewell to a loved one whose earthly life came to an end. The opening line of Charles Dicken’s classic A Tale of Two Cities begins with the line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” One thing about being a pastor is you get to be with people in the best times of their lives, and you try and help people during the worst times of their lives. I don’t know that I will ever feel adequate in either situation. In taking some time to reflect over the past couple of years I thought I’d share with you one wish and then some of the things the Lord has taught me through this time. First the wish. I wish that I’d have had the opportunity to get to know or get to know better some of those who’ve gone on to heaven in the past few years. There have been several faithful people who’ve received their eternal reward over the past few years that I really wish I’d had more time to talk with and learn from before they went to be with the Lord. We are never completely ready to let someone go, are we? Secondly, there have been several things that Lord has taught me over the course of these two years. The first is to cultivate a grateful spirit and crucify a critical spirit. We have so much to be grateful for, despite the challenges we all face. No matter your situation, there are numerous things you can find to be grateful for if you just take time to look for them. Secondly, there is no substitute for fervent, focused prayer. Nearly anyone in Muskogee would tell you that they pray, but the problem is that most people are throwing up token prayers, and not spending time in focused, fervent prayer. Jesus prayed, the early church prayed, and in response to focused, fervent prayer God worked in powerful ways. You and I today still need to pray with fervency and focus. Thirdly, God is willing to save anyone who is willing to believe, but they will not believe if no one shares the gospel with them. It is paramount that we have gospel conversations and share Christ with people who are lost. Hell is real. Heaven is real. Jesus saved us, not only for our benefit, but also that we would share the gospel with others who needed Jesus. The gospel came to each of us on its way to someone else. This list is not exhaustive of all the Lord has shown me, and none of it is some new revelation. But in this year as we strive to focus on WHAT MATTERS MOST, these 3 things have to be near or at the top of the list. JUNE 4, 2017 In closing, I’m grateful for the honor to serve at SEBC and look forward Sunday School 229 with great anticipation to all the phenomenal things God is going to do in AM Worship 278 and through us as a church family in the days and years to come! PM Worship 170 Love you church family.
