Barb Lee, CAP-OM
Hi, I’m Peggy Cossette, and I am the 2011‐2012 Treasurer. I am also the Community Outreach chair which mainly deals with the volunteer opportunities that we participate in such as the Prairie Public phone‐a‐ thons, the Box Tops for Education or putting together a basket for PATH
In thinking about what I wanted to write, I consider an important part of our job as having a mentor or role model. When I was in high school, I really wanted to be a hair stylist or an auto mechanic, but my mother said that I could not do either of those careers so I had to go with plan B.
I have been a member of the Red River Chapter since
March 1, 2000. My participation in the chapter
includes numerous committee and officer positions. I
am currently the website chair and the bylaws and standing rules chair and a member of the education,
Back then, there was a TV show on called “Perry Mason”. For those of you who are too young to remember Perry, he was a lawyer BUT the important part was that he had a secretary named Della Street. I thought she was the best – she did it all – ran the errands, went to court with him, did very little office work and also looked like a million bucks with the sweaters and pearls. She was my idol. So, I went to North Dakota State School of Science for the two‐year legal secretary program. At the beginning of my second year of college, my world fell apart – the Perry mason reruns were no longer available to me. Della was no longer a part of my life and I was LOST (I tell you, LOST). I did not know what I wanted to do – I really didn’t like the legal secretary program that much but did enjoy shorthand (yes, we learned that and were tested on it weekly), typing (on typewriters as there were no computers), and filing. I did not enjoy the accounting portion (just couldn’t wrap my head around debits and credits – still struggle with that) but did finish the legal secretary program anyway.
program and events planning committee. I have served as the chapter’s Secretary, Treasurer, Treasurer‐Elect & President.
Then I got a job as a general secretary after college at the North Dakota Division of Independent Study which was a great first job. I worked at a plumbing company after that and that was another wonderful experience. I then moved on to NDSU where I have been ever since. I have found that the admin field is an ever‐changing field; every day is a new day and a new learning experience. People think that being an admin is an easy job and maybe it is, but being a GOOD admin is keeping up with the constant changes and being flexible and adaptable. Thanks for listening and I hope that you will be able to participate in some of the outreach things that we are planning.
Peggy Cossette, CAP‐OM Red River Chapter Treasurer
I have been in the administrative field for 34 ½ years
for the same employer and am currently an executive assistant for Sanford Health Laboratory & Pathology Services. I work with numerous individuals in the department and the Fargo Region including the vice president, pathologists, directors, managers and a number of other staff members in a variety of roles.
In my spare time, I love to read, knit and crochet and spend time with my family. I have three sons, Tom and Denise (Fargo, Ben, Kylee, Camden, Julia (JuJu) and Alena (Dayton, Ohio), and Chris and Frank (North Hollywood and my cat, Shadow.

[email protected] Happy Holidays! Here we are at the hustle bustle time of year when we celebrate with family and friends, sharing gifts from the heart to those who mean so much to us. Many of us also remember those who struggle for resources this time of year with gifts of financial support. If your giving includes remembering your favorite charities, consider adding the Retirement Trust Foundation to your list. If you are planning your end-of-year giving, please consider a tax deductible donation to the RTF. Go to www.iaap-rtf.org for more information or to complete an online donation. Your contribution will not only help to provide housing assistance for administrative professionals, age 55 and older, who are in need, but will also be used for the maintenance and upkeep of Vista Grande, the world’s first – and only – retirement community for administrative professionals!
