Brandermill launches student scholarship program The student scholarship program is a community partnership between school system aimed at providing student opportunities for community service leading to eligibility for college scholarships. At this time, participation is limited to high school seniors who reside in Brandermill, including those who are home-schooled. This partnership has the full and enthusiastic support of the Chesterthe county’s launch of the “Design for Excellence” initiative. “Design for Excellence” is structured to emphasize student volunteerism and community involvement as a part of student graduation requirements. to the community. Such opportunities might include volunteering for a committee that parallels a student’s interests, assisting staff in the BCA projects that their creative young minds produce. At the completion of their project(s)/service, participating students are eligible to apply for scholarships from the BCA. The BCA Board of Directors has included $2,000 in the annual budget to be awarded in $250 to $500 increments (depending on program participation) to students who meet the scholarship criteria.

mild winter days are uncrowded and beautiful out on the water. The air may be pleasant but the cold water can kill. Hypothermia in layman’s terms is decreased body temperature. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a description of the dangers of hypothermia and what you should do to ensure your safety. Hypothermia is a serious life-threatening condition. It happens when the body’s internal temperature drops below the point where normal body functions occur. It is usually thought of as a cold-weather or cold-water condition, but it can occur at temperatures well above freezing, even in waters as warm as 80 degrees. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can slows, and then stops. In deeper stages of hypothermia, the speech becomes slurred, then incoherent. Eventually, lethargy sets in and breathing slows and becomes shallow and erratic. Finally, the loss of consciousness occurs, leading to death.
