Not even Missouri State’s wins over three Top 25 opponents and a pair of Division I playoff teams a year ago were enough to impress its peers around the Missouri Valley Football Conference with the release of the league’s 2011 preseason poll and all-conference team on Aug. 1. (see sidebar for complete poll).

LAST WEEK

Including eight seasons at Northern Iowa, this is also the first time in 13 MVFC seasons that a Terry Allen team has been picked last in the conference preseason poll. In those 13 years, his squads have never finished worse than predicted, with six finishes higher than projected and seven as projected, including six years when UNI was picked to win the conference.

The only MSU player to earn Preseason All-MVFC first-team distinction is wide receiver Jermaine Saffold (Sr., Grandview, Mo.) who was an All-MVFC second-team selection last year after he caught 53 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns. Three other Bears earned Preseason All-MVFC honorable mention status, including All-America RB Chris Douglas (Sr., Lawrenceville, Ga.), punter Jordan Chiles (Sr., Hillsboro, Ill.) and cornerback Jimmie Strong (Sr., Texarkana, Texas).

Coming off a third-place tie at 4-4 in the MVFC standings in 2010, the Bears were picked ninth in this year’s conference preseason poll as selected by league coaches, media and sports information directors. It marks the first time since 1987 that MSU has been picked last in the league preseason poll.

In 2010, Douglas became just the 10th MSU back to accumulate 1,000 rushing yards in a single season when he tallied 1,051 yards on 152 carries, scored 11 touchdowns and finished second in the nation in yards per carry (6.9). He achieved all that while getting just one start and sharing the workload with classmate Stephen Johnston who had 147 carries, 752 yards and 10 starts. Chiles averaged 38.3 yards per punt as a junior. Half of his 56 punts were fair caught or downed inside the opponents’ 20yard line, and he is poised for his fourth season as a starter on the Bears’ special teams. Strong led the Bears with four interceptions in 2010 and did so in just nine games as he spent a great deal of his junior year fighting the injury bug. He tallied 31 total tackles and defended six passes.

BEARS IN THE NFL Consensus All-America standouts Clay Harbor (2009) and David Arkin (2010) are taking their reputation as hard workers and clutch performers to the National Football League. Harbor begins his second season as a tight end with the Philadelphia Eagles, while Arkin is a rookie offensive linemen for the Dallas Cowboys. Arkin earned the start in his first-ever appearance with the Cowboys, an Aug. 11 preseason game against the Denver Broncos. He enters the 2011 season listed as the Cowboys’ No. 2 left guard behind Bill Nagy. In addition to his All-America and all-conference honors, Arkin was also a CoSIDA Academic All-America second-team pick a year ago and played in the East-West Shrine Game as well as the NFLPA Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game. He was drafted as the 13th pick of the fourth round (110 overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft. In his rookie NFL season in 2010, Harbor played in 9 games for the Eagles and had 9 receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown as Philadelphia’s No. 2 tight end. He has picked up where he left off, entering the 2011 campaign as the Eagles’ No. 2 tight end behind Brent Celek. He was drafted as the 27th pick of the fourth round (125 overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft. Two additional Bears from the 2010 team -- Kolby Hurt (LB) and Jake Duron (OL) signed free agent contracts with the Saints and Jets, respectively this summer. Duron was released on Aug. 23, and Hurt was let go by the Saints on Aug. 30.

MSU PRODUCES NEWCOMER TALENT In the history of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, only Western Illinois (68) has produced more MVFC All-Newcomer selections than the Missouri State Bears who have collected 65 such honors since the league first began recognizing an All-Newcomer team in 1994. On this year’s roster, five Bears have been listed on previous MVFC All-Newcomer squads: 2008 - Jordan Chiles (P) and David Ingram (LB); 2009 - Mikael Cooper-Falls (RB) and Cadarrius Dotson (WR); 2010 - Nick Canavan (LB).

2010 SENIORS GRADUATE Of the 20 seniors on the 2010 Bears’ roster, 13 earned their degrees prior to the start of the 2011-12 school year. Five additional Bears are still enrolled in classes at Missouri State to complete their undergraduate work.

See pages 18-21 for complete Terry Allen bio, statistics and career summary

FIRST AND TEN This is Missouri State’s first trip to Salukis Stadium, which opened in 2010 and replaced McAndrew Stadium. The Bears played the final regular-season game ever at McAndrew (a 44-24 SIU victory) and finished 7-9 all-time in the old facility. Last week at No. 12 Oregon, Missouri State took the opening drive of the game 84 yards for a touchdown. The Bears started the nine-play excursion at their own 16 and covered the ground in 4 minutes, 38 seconds. The sequence marked the Bears’ first lead over an FBS program since holding a 3-0 lead at Arkansas in 2005. It was also MSU’s first game-opening drive for a touchdown in four games. After giving up 416 rushing yards at Oregon last week, the Bears dropped from 70th to 115th in this week’s NCAA Division I FCS national rush defense rankings. It marked the most rushing yards allowed by the Bears since Western Illinois racked up 459 yards on Nov. 15, 2008 at Plaster Field. Last week, the Bears controlled the clock at No. 12 Oregon for 39:30 and had more yards in the first half (217) than they did in the entire season opener at No. 15 Arkansas (163). MSU finished with 289 total yards against the Ducks. Southern Illinois ranks among the nation’s top 20 teams in four NCAA categories, including 11th in rushing offense (231.5), 11th in total offense (457.0), 16th in passing defense (140.0), and 20th in total defense (288.0). The Salukis feature a double-threat offense that includes running back Steve Strother, who averages 98.5 rushing yards per game (24th in the nation), while quarterback Paul McIntosh is accounting for 294.0 yards per game in total offense which ranks No. 10 nationally and tops in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Bears are 12-14 in MVFC openers since joining the league in 1985, including an 0-5 ledger under Terry Allen. The last time MSU opened conference play against the Salukis was in 2005, a 30-23 overtime win for SIU at McAndrew Stadium. The Bears are 0-3 for the first time since 1994 when they started 0-5. Likewise, no Terry Allen-coached team -- at UNI, Kansas or Missouri State -- has ever started 0-3. Missouri State is looking to snap a 10-game road losing streak that dates back to a 21-17 win in the FargoDome at North Dakota State on Oct. 24, 2009. Missouri State’s defense enters Week 4 without having committed a penalty. As a team, the Bears have been penalized 12 times for 79 yards with the offense drawing 10 flags and special teams collecting two.

BEAR CAPTAINS The Missouri State players have elected five senior co-captains to represent them throughout the 2011 season. Seniors Chris Douglas (RB, Lawrenceville, Ga.), David Ingram (ILB, Siloam Springs, Ark.), Stephen Johnston (RB, Mansfield, Texas), Mikel Ruder (DE, Lawrence, Kan.) and Travis Simmons (OL, Mexico, Mo.) will be calling the coin toss and leading the pregame handshakes for the Bears this fall.

MISSOURI STATE QUICK FACTS

For the first time in the program’s history, the Bears will open the season with four straight road games. MSU started the 1911, 1942, 1982 and 1990 seasons with three consecutive games away from Springfield.

According to Mapquest.com, the Bears will log 6,024 travel miles for their first four road games at Arkansas (Sept. 3), Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 10), Oregon (Sept. 17) and Southern Illinois (Sept. 24). After this week, the Bears will play four of their next six contests at Plaster Field in Springfield, including next week’s (Oct. 1) home opener against Northern Iowa. The game against UNI will the club’s latest home opener since coach Howard Blair’s squad lost a 6-0 decision to Memphis on Oct. 9, 1942.

DEPTH PERCEPTION The Bears had two big plays early in the Oregon game (9/17), giving them 5 plays of 30 or more yards so far this season. In the first quarter, Trevor Wooden (So., High Springs, Fla.) completed a 30-yard pass to tight end Matt Thayer (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.). The Bears would use the momentum of that reception to find paydirt six plays later to take an early 7-0 lead at No. 12 Oregon. Later in the opening quarter, Wooden completed a 37-yard pass to Cadarrius Dotson (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) off a deflection. That play finished at the Oregon 16 and saw the Bears drive all the way to the Oregon 7-yard-line before they turned it over on downs four plays later.

CHILES GETTING KICKS Senior punter Jordan Chiles (Hillsboro, Ill.) is averaging 7.0 punts per game through the Bears’ first three contests and currently ranks No. 22 in the NCAA Division I FCS ranks in punting average (42.1), which is also second in the MVFC. In 2011, he has three punts of 50+ yards, including a season-high 72-yarder at Arkansas (9/3/11), and has had five punts downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, in addition to one touchback and a pair of fair catches. For his career, Chiles, has 183 career punts for 7,151 yards and a 39.1 average, which rank fourth-fourth-and seventh, respectively, in MSU history.

The Bears opened the 2011 season at AP No. 15 Arkansas (lost 51-7), before last week’s 56-7 loss at No. 12 Oregon. Both FBS foes played in BCS bowls last season, including Oregon’s trip to the BCS National Championship game. Coupled with three FCS preseason Top 25 conference opponents, MSU can make a valid claim as having the toughest schedule in the Division I FCS ranks. Amazingly, no other football program at any level will play two AP Top 15 programs as part of their non-conference schedule this season.

MSU, A PROGRAM ON THE RISE With an enrollment of 23,092, Missouri State University is the largest school in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (and the Missouri Valley Conference), as well as the second-largest institution in the state of Missouri. According to the 2010 U.S. census, Springfield, Mo., has a population 159,498, which ranks No. 3 in the state behind Kansas City (459,787) and St. Louis (319,294). The Springfield metro area also has a population of 436,712. The Bears moved to NCAA Division I status for the 1982-83 season and joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference (formerly the Gateway Conference) in 1985 where they have been a member ever since. MSU is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference in 13 other sports -- a league founded in 1907 and the second-oldest Division I conference in the nation. MSU also holds affiliate membership in the Mid-American Conference for field hockey and men’s swimming and diving. Missouri State teams have made 49 NCAA Tournament appearances as a Division I institution, including 13 in women’s basketball, nine in volleyball, seven in baseball and six in men’s basketball and softball. In addition, a number of individual qualifiers have represented the maroon and white at NCAA Division I national meets in sports like track, swimming and others.

MEDIA PLAYER OF THE WEEK A week after breaking the Missouri State record for passing yards in a first start, Trevor Wooden (So., High Springs, Fla.) was named MSU Media Player of the Week for the Oregon game by a panel of Bears’ print and broadcast professionals. Against the No. 12 Ducks, Wooden had a team-high 67 rushing yards on 16 carries (4.2 ypc) and was 6-for-13 through the air for 91 yards. He was sacked just twice and engineered an impressive 84-yard touchdown drive on the first series of the game to lead the Bears to an early 7-0 lead. MSU’s offense did not commit any turnovers in the game, and Wooden completed a pair of 30-yard pass plays in the contest.

ABOUT MISSOURI STATE UNIVERISTY Missouri State is a public, comprehensive university system with a mission in public affairs, whose purpose is to develop educated persons while achieving five goals: democratizing society, incubating new ideas, imagining Missouri’s future, making Missouri’s future, and modeling ethical and effective behavior. With a record enrollment of 23,092 (fall 2010), MSU is the second-largest institution for higher learning in Missouri, and its identity is distinguished by its statewide mission in public affairs. This mission requires a campus-wide commitment to foster competence and responsibility in the common vocation of citizenship. Missouri State University is a selective admissions, graduate-level, teaching and research institution. Notable Missouri State alums include: Ryan Howard (2009 NLCS MVP, first baseman, Philadelphia Phillies), John Goodman (actor), Kathleen Turner (actress), David Glass (owner, Kansas City Royals), John Q. Hammons (businessman, hotel developer), Bob Holden (43rd governor of Missouri), Bill Mueller (2003 American League batting champ), Jackie Stiles (Division I career scoring leader), and Blake Ahearn (NBA D-League MVP and All-Star Game co-MVP).

LAST TIME AROUND Cody Kirby passed for a career-high 348 yards, and Chris Douglas scored three touchdowns to lead Missouri State past visiting Southern Illinois for the first time since 2002. The Bears, who won their fifth straight game at Plaster Field and overcame an early 9-0 deficit, took their first lead early in the third quarter. After the Salukis took the opening kickoff of the second half to their own 36, Derek Miller snagged his seventh career interception three plays later to turn the tides. Miller gave the Bears a short field to work with, and seven plays later, Austin Witmer knocked through a 27-yard field goal to give MSU a 20-19 lead with 12:18 left in the third. Terry Allen’s Bears then scored on their next two possessions to extend their lead to 34-19. An SIU fumble set up a two-yard touchdown run by Douglas to cap a 28-yard drive, and an impressive 89-yard touchdown drive that concluded with a twoyard scoring pass from Kirby to Wes Miller gave Missouri State its biggest lead of the afternoon. The Salukis would eventually tie the game, 41-41, but the Bears’ defense held SIU to a three-and-out after a 30-yard field goal by Witmer gave the edge back to the home team. Kirby later took over, completing three of four passes for 35 yards and rushing for nine more to set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Douglas with 2:20 to go and secure a 51-41 win. The gamewinning 64-yard drive took 10 plays and consumed 4:49.

2011 Missouri State Football Game Notes Head Coach, 6th year Terry Allen Terry Allen enters his sixth season at the helm of the Missouri State program with one of the toughest Division I FCS schedules in the country on his plate and a young team anxious to prove itself in elite company. Allen was named Missouri State’s 19th head football coach on December 20, 2005. In his inaugural season at Missouri State, Allen inherited a senior-heavy team that finished 2-9. However, the Bears dropped four games by a touchdown or less that season and lost another contest by 10 points. The team landed three players on the 2006 all-conference list and set the foundation for the program’s future. Allen then took his charges to an exciting 6-5 campaign in 2007, the biggest improvement for a Missouri State team in 19 years. The Bears were 5-1 at home in year two and produced 36.3 points per game, MSU’s best scoring average ever for an 11-game season. MSU also scored 49.5 points a game for the team’s six home contests. Missouri State also knocked off three ranked opponents in 2007 and landed three on the All-MVFC squad. Sophomore tight end Clay Harbor and freshman lineman David Arkin joined Nathan Stokes for league honors. Harbor was also named to the AP ThirdTeam All-America squad, while senior TB Gerald Davis set a school record with 19 rushing touchdowns. In 2008, the Bears continued to make strides under Allen’s leadership. Despite a 4-7 overall record, the substance of the

team’s performance showed a 3-3 road mark, which matched the school’s most road victories since 1996. Likewise, the team’s 3-5 record in the new-look Missouri Valley Football Conference equalled the team’s most league wins since 1993. MSU also lost two games by margins of eight points or less along the way. Even more impressive in 2008 was the effort put forth by the program’s inventory of underclassmen. Harbor, a junior, earned All-MVFC first team honors for the second straight year, while moving up to Second Team on the AP All-America list. Joining Harbor on the all-conference squad were sophomore guard Arkin and second-year quarterback Cody Kirby. In 2009, the Bears notched their second winning campaign in three years under Allen, once again going 6-5 and 4-4 in the MVFC. Missouri State was 3-2 on the road, including first-ever wins at Youngstown State and North Dakota State to complement the squad’s first victory at Western Illinois since 2001. Eight players were recognized by the MVFC as all-conference performers, including first-teamers Harbor, Arkin and Valley Newcomer of the Year Antoine Wilkinson (LB). Harbor became Allen’s first Missouri State player drafted into the NFL when he was snagged in the fourth round of the 2010 Draft by the Eagles. Last season, Allen’s Bears went undefeated at home, marking the first time since 1992 that an MSU team had gone unbeaten at Plaster Sports Complex. The 2010 Bears also knocked off three Top 25 opponents -- No. 20 Youngstown State, No. 18 Western Illinois and No. 17 North Dakota State. MSU also beat two Division I playoff opponents, including eventual national quarterfinalist North Dakota State, en route to tying for third place in the competitive MVFC standings. The Bears landed seven players on the 2010 All-MVFC Team, including Arkin and Wilkinson on the first team, junior WR Jermaine Saffold

and senior safety Skylar Smith on the second team, plus honorable mention picks in junior TB Chris Douglas and seniors Kirby and OLB Terian Washington. Arkin became the second Bear picked in the NFL Draft in as many years when the Dallas Cowboys picked him up in the fourth round, capping a consensus All-America season for the standout tackle. Allen came to MSU for his second stint in the league. When he left UNI after the 1996 season, his 75-26 (.743) record made him the winningest coach in league history. His Panther teams won or shared league titles seven straight seasons from 1990-96 and competed in the NCAA playoffs each of his last seven seasons at UNI. The Panthers advanced to the national semifinals in 1992 and 1996. Allen was named MVFC Coach of the Year five times in his last six seasons at UNI and was named Kodak Regional Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1996. Allen’s UNI teams did not lose a home conference game in his eight years as head coach. He lost two games in those eight seasons to Illinois State and the other league schools only beat him once each. Starting in 1992, UNI was nationally ranked for 87 consecutive weeks. Allen followed more than 20 years at UNI with five seasons as head coach at Kansas (1997-2001). He later spent four seasons as associate head coach, tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at Iowa State (2002-05). Allen’s teams were 20-33 his five seasons as head coach of the Kansas

19

2011 Missouri State Football Game Notes Jayhawks. Included in that tenure were wins over nationally-ranked Colorado, a win over Oklahoma, and three victories over arch-rival Missouri. He also guided Kansas to its 500th all-time win in 1997 and opened his final season at KU with a 24-10 win over Missouri State in 2001. Allen’s KU and UNI tenures finished with a collective 95-59 overall record, including a 63-4 record when his teams were ahead at halftime. Allen’s squads were 31-15 in games decided by seven points or fewer. He also tutored nine future NFL players during that stint, including Arizona Cardinals all-pro quarterback Kurt Warner who was the 1999 and 2001 NFL Offensive Player of the Year for the St. Louis Rams. Former all-pro linebacker Bryce Paup, the 1995 NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the Buffalo Bills, also played for Allen. Moving to Iowa State as associate head coach in 2002, Allen renewed a lengthy relationship with Cyclones head coach Dan McCarney who was Allen’s prep track coach in Iowa City. In Allen’s four seasons at Iowa State, the

Cyclones went to three bowl games with Allen coaching special teams. He graduate from UNI with a degree in physical education in 1979 and immediately joined Stan Sheriff’s Panther staff as a graduate assistant coach. He moved to a full-time position the next year and stayed on the staff when Sheriff retired and handed the reins to Darrell Mudra in 1983. During his decade as a UNI assistant, Allen had responsibility at various times for quarterbacks, offensive backs and wide receivers. Allen was a standout prep quarterback at West High School in Iowa City and would start three seasons as UNI’s top QB. In his head coaching career, he has mentored 19 AP All-America players and 193 all-conference selections. Allen’s father, Robert, was a football player and national champion swimmer at Iowa. The elder Allen served as an Iowa assistant football coach and head men’s swimming coach for 16 years. He and his wife, Lynn, have three children; Angela, Chase and Alex.

Missouri State Bears............................................7 (15) Arkansas Razorbacks .............................51

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Missouri State was out-gained 466-163 in a 51-7 seasonopening loss at No. 15 Arkansas. The announced crowd of 70,607 was the largest ever for an MSU football contest. The Bears collected 145 of their yards in the second half and produced their only points on a 33-yard touchdown pass from true freshman starter Kierra Harris to All-America wide receiver Jermaine Saffold in the third quarter. The one-play drive started at the UofA 33 after a forced fumble was recovered by Nick Canavan there to set up the Bears’ only points. Both teams committed just one turnover, and the Bears were penalized just four times on the night while collecting three sacks to Arkansas’ two. Chris Douglas led MSU with 18 carries for 72 yards, while Harris finished 8-for-14 with an interception and 70 yards. Special teams performers Julian Burton, Jordan Chiles and Kaleb Mueller also had big nights, with Burton collecting 110 return yards, and Chiles averaging 45.9 yards on 8 punts. As one of four freshman starters, Mike Crutcher led the MSU defense with 10 total tackles, while Ryan Callender added 8. Arkansas covered 80 yards on 10 plays on the game’s opening drive before Tyler Wilson found Jarius Wright from 33 yards out for the first score. Joe Adams’ punt return and a missed extra point followed two-and-a-half minutes later to make it 13-0. Bobby Petrino’s squad then capped a 70-yard drive before the end of the first quarter as Kody Walker punched it into the end zone from one yard out on the 12th play of the 70-yard series. After falling behind 30-0 at the half and 44-0 late in the third, Missouri State finally got on the board with 45 seconds left in the period. A strip by Andrew Biesel and a fumble recovery by Canavan gave the Bears the ball at the Arkansas 33. On the first play of the ensuing sequence, Harris threw a strike to Saffold in the right corner end zone for the touchdown. The touchdown catch was Saffold’s ninth. Ronnie Wingo led Arkansas with 43 ground yards on 11 carries, while Wilson was 18-for-24 for 260 and a pair of scores, and Wright led all receivers with 6 catches for 108 yards. Score by Quarters

Missouri State Bears........................................ 24 Eastern Kentucky Colonels .......................... 28

RICHMOND, Ky. - A solid comeback attempt by Missouri State fell short as the Bears dropped a 28-24 decision to Eastern Kentucky in non-conference play. After trailing 14-0 at the half and being outgained 276-132 after two quarters, the Bears took the opening drive of the third quarter all the way for a score as Trevor Wooden engineered a 60-yard drive that consumed 14 plays and 6 minutes, 54 seconds. He converted three third downs on the sequence and called his own number from the two-yard line for the score with 8:06 left in the third period. The Bears outgained the Colonels 132-4 in the third quarter and ended the period knocking on the door of a potential game-tying score. On third-and-goal, Chris Douglas was cut down at the one-yard line, and MSU elected to kick an 18-yard field goal. Austin Witmer converted the chip shot attempt to wrap a 14-play, 63-yard drive to make it 14-10 just 48 seconds into the final period. However, just as it looked like the momentum was changing for good, EKU brought the home crowd of 9,200 back into the game with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jeremy Caldwell to make it 21-10 with 14:11 to go in the contest. Missouri State bounced off the canvas with a quick strike of its own on the next series. Julian Burton returned the ensuing kickoff to the Bears’ 29, setting up a 71-yard TD strike from Wooden to Jermaine Saffold on the very next play to make it 21-17. The teams exchanged punts on the next two series, but when the Colonels took over at their own 41 with 8:41 to go, Pryor put together a 59-yard touchdown drive to seal the win for the home club. The 13-play drive was capped with a 12-yard scamper by Jeremiah Williams to end the nearly-five-minute drive and made it 28-17 with 3:55 left in the contest. MSU rallied on its next series, staying in the game with a 60-yard scoring drive that culminated in a nine-yard pass from Wooden to Saffold to make it 28-24 with 1:54 to go. The series took nine plays and consumed just over two minutes as the senior wideout collected his 11th career touchdown catch. Eastern recovered the ensuing sky kick at its own 33 and ultimately ran out the clock. In his first career start, Wooden finished 22-for-32 for 262 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also had a team-high 71 rushing yards with a score to finish with 333 total yards and break an MSU record for passing yards in a debut performance. Missouri State Bears............................................7 (12) Oregon Ducks .............................................56

EUGENE, Ore. - James, meanwhile, matched a career high with three rushing touchdowns and totaled a season-high 204 yards on 12 carries, including a 90-yard touchdown run that represented the longest in the 45-year history of Autzen Stadium. While Oregon’s offense rolled, it was the Duck’s defense that turned in perhaps the biggest play of the opening half. The Bears’ offense provided plenty of reasons for optimism early in the game, piling up 11 first downs in the opening half to surpass their total for the entire game against previous FBS opponent Arkansas. MSU outgained the Ducks 147-98 in the first quarter, as Wooden would connect on all four pass attempts for 80 yards in the period. But, with Missouri State driving toward a potential game-tying touchdown early in the second quarter, the Ducks’ defense rose to the occasion, stopping Chris Douglas on a fourth-and-one attempt at the seven yard line to thwart the MSU drive and spark a turning point in the game. The Ducks would score three unanswered touchdowns over the ensuing six-anda-half minutes to build a 35-7 halftime lead, then found the endzone on their first three possessions of the second half to put the game out of reach for good. Oregon’s defense did its part as well, as the Ducks totaled 10 first downs in the second half before the Bears got their first and limited MSU to 32 total yards in the third period en route to running their record to 2-1 on the season. The outcome marked a stark contrast to the onset of the contest that saw the Bears take the opening kickoff and march down the field for a nine-play, 84-yard drive that was capped by Douglas’s three-yard touchdown run. The early score gave MSU its first lead over an FBS program since it led Arkansas 3-0 in 2005. Trevor Wooden hooked up with junior tight end Matt Thayer on a pair of key completions to set up the drive. On a third and five from the Missouri State 21 yard line, Wooden found a wide open Thayer down the sideline for a 30-yard gain. Following an 18-yard scamper by Wooden, the MSU signal-caller found Thayer once again, this time for an eight-yard gain to the Oregon 16. A 12-yard pickup by freshman Julian Burton moved the ball to the Ducks three, and Douglas punched home his first touchdown of the season to punctuate the drive at the 10:22 mark. Missouri State Bears........................................ 24 Eastern Kentucky Colonels .......................... 28

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
