Harrington Park has been promoting home composting since April 2010 when Green Team members set up a demonstration model with a BCUA provided Earth Machine™ composter at our Town Heritage Day. Since then, a model has been demonstrated, with samples of home compost available for inspection, and composters available for purchase, at the three main annual town events: Heritage Day in April, the Library White Elephant fund raiser in June, and Town Day in September. At these events we also hand out literature about composting basics, options for composting (i.e. in open piles, compost bins or rolling or tumbler units) and information on purchasing the Earth Machine™ bin. These composters ($53, on consignment from the BCUA) are available for purchase at Borough Hall year round. In the spring of 2013 a composter was installed by the town library and is used by Borough Hall and HP library staff. This active model is demonstrated to visitors to the EC/Green Team information table at the two events that take place at Borough Hall. This is a photograph of the town librarian adding material to the demonstration composter located at the side of the Harrington Park library (May 2014).
Below are photographs taken at the town Harrington Park Library White Elephant Fundraiser,, where the HP EC & Green Team annually hosts an information table (June 1,2013).
Green Team volunteers spoke with over 35 people that day and sold 2 composters—on consignment from the BCUA.
A composter was also on display at Town Day (September 21, 2103) with a sample of compost from the library composter; the focus of that day was more for “Buy Local, Buy Fresh”.
An Earth Machine™ composter has in use at the Harrington Park K-8 school since 2010; composting is part of their recycling & garden education program. (The composter is visible in far back left in the lower photo; both photos were taken on 9/30/13 and show how successful this school garden is!)
