Belvidere PTO Science Expo June 5, 2013 Kindergarten – 2nd Grade Schedule of events Kaleidoscope Learning https://sites.google.com/site/kaleidoscopelearningcenter/ Assembly Kick Off - Celebrating Science

(3 x 30 minute stations) Groups divided by grade Biology– Da Vinci Science Center http://www.davinci-center.org/vsl.html Grades K-2: Owl pellet dissections (each kid will get their own and take with them) and look at the skull of a beaver.

Human Body – Da Vinci Science Center Grades K-2: Touch real pig lungs (one healthy pair, one diseased (smoker’s) lungs) and learn about the benefits of not smoking. Look at real brains of humans encased in plastic. Thumbs up for opposable thumbs (tape your thumbs to your forefinger and try to tie your shoes, write with a pencil, and shake your neighbor’s hand). Vision activities: Strop effect (read the color, not the word), Zoetrope (classic animation toy) and Strobotop (strobe flashes on a moving picture on a wheel to create animation movement) Chemistry – Da Vinci Science Center Grades K-2: Do you love mixing things together? Mix some safe chemicals together to create some cool reactions. Solve the mystery of “what’s in that slime?”

Rutgers University Physics Demo: Presented by Dave Maiullo http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/outreach/ Whether he is lying on a bed of nails, illuminating pickles like light bulbs or exploding hydrogen balloons, Dave Maiullo takes hard-to-understand scientific principles and creates ways to make audiences sit up and pay attention. The demonstration is designed not just to inform but with an eye towards humor, exciting the imagination as well as emphasizing the fun in science.

Belvidere PTO Science Expo June 5, 2013 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Schedule of events (3x 30 minute stations) Divided by Grade Biology – Da Vinci Science Center http://www.davinci-center.org/vsl.html Grades 3-5: Dissect a cow eyeball and learn about the different parts of the eye.

Human Body – Da Vinci Science Center Grades 3-5: Touch real pig lungs (one healthy pair, one diseased (smoker’s) lungs) and learn about the benefits of not smoking. Look at real brains of humans encased in plastic. Test your vision and reaction time as you learn about how the brain controls your muscles with the following activities: -Cup drop challenge -Ruler drop challenge -Strop effect -See the world through the eyes of people with specific diseases of the eyes using adaptive goggles -Finger maze: can you find your way through the maze without your sense of sight? Chemistry – Da Vinci Science Center Grades 3-5: Kids will make glue slime and test it against two factory made slimes (students will get to keep slime that they make with a partner).

Hobby Quest: http://www.thehobbyquest.com/ Grades 4-6: Will have a presentation to learn about the elementary history, physics and properties of flight. Then the students will each build a balsa wood airplane. In addition to building and flying of the airplanes, a.k.a. "the fun stuff", we also focus and integrate into our program, at an age appropriate level, several areas of education; Math (basic and geometry), visual arts, history, technology, physics, aerodynamics, metric system, drafting/plans, architecture, woodworking and home economics.

Belvidere PTO Science Expo June 5, 2013 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Schedule of events (4x 1 hour stations) Bio Bus – presentation by Dr. Ben Dubin-Thaler - www.biobus.org The Cell Motion BioBus is a mobile science laboratory. Students explore the world around them with researchgrade microscopes, and make their own discoveries under the guidance of professional scientists. Students’ interest in science is energized after boarding the green-energy-powered, research-grade microscope lab. Adam DiVine – Director of the Functional Human Anatomy Department at Rutgers University. Adam will be bringing in a human heart, lung and brain and explore the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems. Jasime Ashraf – from Princeton University Department of Molecular Biology. She will be using the nematode "C. elegans" as a model for human aging.

Chip Nataro is a Chemistry professor at Lafayette College. In addition to teaching, he is actively involved in research with his students. The work involves making new compounds that have potential applications in making new pharmaceutical drugs. He will be giving a presentation about his research and perform some interesting demonstrations including making slime.
