LOCATION Wisdom, Wise River, Montana, Beaverhead County, is located in the Big Hole Valley which is 65 miles Northwest of Dillon, MT and 120 miles Southeast of Missoula, Montana. Missoula International Airport is serviced by Delta, United, Northwest, Allegiant, Alaska and Horizon airlines. The Bert Mooney Airport in Butte, Montana is approximately 80 miles from Wisdom and is serviced by SkyWest Airlines, the Delta Connection, Horizon Air and the Northwest / Alaska Airlines. Wisdom was named for the Wisdom (now the Big Hole) River that flows through the town. In 1805 Lewis and Clark, at the confluence of the tributaries of the Jefferson River near the present site of Twin Bridges, decided to name the three streams for the three "cardinal virtues" of the President and benefactor, Thomas Jefferson. But Philosophy, Philanthropy, and Wisdom proved to be too much for later settlers, who changed the names to the Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Ruby. But the town kept the name Wisdom and later a nearby waterway was named the Wise River. The Big Hole Valley is often called the "Valley of 10,000 Haystacks." It's quite a sight to watch the ranchers put up hay during late July and early August. They still use the beaver slide, an early-day haying invention originating in Beaverhead County. WILDLIFE AND FISHERY Fishing on the Big Hole River has always been popular. This river is one of Montana's best, with a diversity that's hard to match. The Big Hole hosts rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout. Rocky Mountain whitefish are also present, as well as the last fluvial (river-dwelling) population of grayling in the United States, outside of Alaska, of course. Much of the land bordering the Big Hole River is privately owned, so floating the river will let you cover the greatest amount of water. The Big Hole is fishable from its source down to its confluence with the Beaverhead. This river takes on many faces throughout its journey; from mountain stream, to meadow stream, tumbling through a canyon and then on to a broad slow-moving river meandering through farmland. The Big Hole has a variety of water that can be fished using a variety of methods. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks manages the Big Hole fisheries in several segments, with slot limits, gear restrictions, and regulations suited, they believe, to best manage the fish in each segment.

The Big Hole River is described in The Montana Angling Guide as having, "optimum water variety, challenge, plenty of nice fish and the insect life to support it". This classic riffle, run, pool water is wonderful to float in June during high water. This is when the famous salmon fly hatch occurs, during which there is some of the The Ranch Brokers | (307) 690-5425 | 610 S Hwy 93 | Hamilton, MT 59840 | www.theranchbrokers.com | [email protected] 9

most exciting dry fly fishing an angler may ever experience. The adult salmon fly is two to three inches long and can drive the largest trout in the river to forego their cautious ways and feed with abandon. The river is easily waded during the lower-water months of July through October, when caddis, hoppers, tricos and a variety of other mayflies dominate the table fare. Streamer fishing can be fantastic throughout the spring, summer and fall but is particularly enjoyable in the weeks leading up to the salmon fly hatch and again in the fall. There are very large fish in this section of the river, where it is possible to land browns up to 20-24 inches long. The most notable fact of the upper Big Hole River is that it is home to one of the few populations of fluvial Artie Grayling in the lower forty-eight states. Ranging in size from six to ten inches, Grayling are not large in size but they are definitely an interesting and beautiful fish. Silver and blue in color, the Grayling is most recognized by its large dorsal sail-like fin. Grayling will rise to most dry flies but will take nymphs as well. In the Big Hole River the fluvial Grayling are protected by catch and release regulations. The fishing on this property in particular is unique in that it lies just upstream from the first section of a heavily braided river channel. These braids provide the perfect setting for evening wading trips as they are easily negotiated. When discussing trout and trout fishing, it is important to make a distinction between wild trout and hatchery trout. The wild trout of Montana are dramatically different from the stocked trout found in the streams of other states. "Wild trout" is a quality that, in the purist definition of the phrase, can only be found in Montana. Montana is the only state in the nation to implement a "wild trout management policy." The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks have not stocked any moving water in the state since the early seventies, preferring instead to focus on providing habitat, and allowing the wild trout to reproduce naturally. To a trout fisherman, the difference between hatchery trout and wild trout is obvious and immediate in the feeding behavior, visual beauty, and quality of fight in the fish. For skiers, the comparison has been made that 'hatchery trout are to wild trout what manmade snow is to fresh powder'. Stocked trout will eat most anything, The Ranch Brokers | (307) 690-5425 | 610 S Hwy 93 | Hamilton, MT 59840 | www.theranchbrokers.com | [email protected] 10

anywhere, anytime, with reckless abandon. For a fly fisher, this is comparable to fooling the village idiot over and over. After a short period of time this provides little satisfaction. Additionally, stocked trout are notoriously poor fighters as a result of their pampered upbringing in the hatchery tank. Wild trout have gained strength from their life in the river and are much more apt to jump when hooked, and peel line off your reel with powerful runs. If your intention is to continue to hone your skills as a fly fisher throughout your life and ' become the best fly fisher you can, the only qualified teacher is the challenging and beautiful wild trout.

HUNTING The Big Hole Valley is also very well known for big game hunting including elk, deer, bears and, in some areas, antelope. The area allows you easy and abundant access to thousands of acres of public land with tremendous big game opportunities. It is not uncommon from this property to see large numbers of elk on the surrounding hill sides. There are also large numbers of both whitetail and mule deer that call the Big Hole River bottom their home. They can be seen on any given evening making their rounds, feeding in the area's meadows and hay fields and always traveling near the river for a drink. Licenses to hunt these species are easily obtained through a lottery system for non-residents or over-thecounter for residents. Montana has a very generous hunting season starting in September for archery hunters through mid-October. Then from the middle of October through the end of November, the firearms hunter can roam the hills in search of their trophies. The Big Hole Sporting Home lies within the Pacific Flyway for Migratory birds. This flyway extends from Alaska to Patagonia. Migratory birds follow this route every year in search of food sources and breeding grounds. Needless to say, this provides for duck hunting in the area, as well as bird watching.

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES There are some of the most scenic vistas you will ever experience, starting with majestic mountains, lush meadows, spirited rivers, meandering creeks, and wildlife galore! Of course, this means there are some of the best outdoor activities you can imagine. Whether you like to fish, hunt, hike, bike, rockhound, explore, watch wildlife, golf, ski, snowmobile or swim this valley offers it all. There are three ski areas within an hour of the property: Discovery Ski Basin, Lost Trails and Maverick Mountain. Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is located approximately 35± minutes north in Fairmont, Montana. The main attractions of the resort are the indoor and outdoor pools, all full of hot spring water ranging in temperature from 88° to 104° Fahrenheit. These pools provide a relaxing getaway all year long. In the summer, enjoy the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort's golf course, with some of the most challenging holes in Montana. According to www.fairmontmontana.com Fairmont's "mile high, mile long" 5th hole is recognized as one of the most challenging among Montana golf courses. The green is a mile high and the tee box is 649 yards away, making The Ranch Brokers | (307) 690-5425 | 610 S Hwy 93 | Hamilton, MT 59840 | www.theranchbrokers.com | [email protected] 11

this par 5 the longest hole in Montana. Fairmont's 3rd hole features Montana's largest green, a three-tiered, 10,000 square foot putting surface. Maverick Mountain and Discovery Basin Ski Areas are both located within an hour drive. Discovery Basin, northeast of the Big Hole Sporting Home, offers six lifts providing access to 614± skiable acres spread over 2,100± acres of National Forest. Discovery also provides 5k of groomed cross country trails. Big Sky Resort, one of North Americas premier ski resorts, is only a short two-hour drive from the Big Hole Sporting Home. Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area encompasses 56,151± acres of public land and is located 15± miles northwest of the property. A person can enjoy hours of wildlife viewing, bird watching, bicycling, hunting, hiking and many nights of camping. Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area is also home to the Mount Haggin Nordic Ski Area. Mile High Nordic Ski Club has teamed up with the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks to create over 25 kilometers of ski trails that are groomed weekly by ski club volunteers.
