ERIC KORDENBROCK • QB • Senior VMI • Gibsonia, Pa.

QUINN BACKUS • LB • Junior Coastal Carolina • Greenwood, S.C.

Kordenbrock accounted for all five of VMI’s touchdowns in the Keydets’ 34-27 win over Glenville State. He passed for 314 yards with a career-high four touchdowns and tallied his first career rushing score. Kordenbrock finished the day 23-of-30 passing ( =76.7 percent) with no interceptions and touchdown passes of 8, 38, 56 and 10 yards while running in a score from 1-yard out. He is the first VMI quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns in a game since 2000.

Backus tallied 15 tackles, including nine solo stops, in Coastal Carolina’s 35-28 win over Furman. He also recorded a tackle-for-loss, two pass break-ups and an interception. On Furman’s opening drive of the game, Backus intercepted a pass in Coastal territory. In the second quarter, Backus’ three-yard tackle-forloss on third down forced a Furman field goal, and he later forced a punt in the third quarter with his first pass break-up of the game. On Furman’s final drive, he sealed the victory with a pass deflection to force a turnover on downs. For his efforts, Backus was named a National All-Star by College Sporting News.

GRANT BOWDEN • P • Senior Liberty • Centreville, Va.

ALEX SCEARCE • S • R-Freshman Coastal Carolina • Huntersville, N.C.

Bowden averaged 40.2 yards on five punts to help Liberty win the field possession battle and defeat Monmouth. Two of his punts pinned the Hawks inside the 20-yard line, including the first which put Monmouth at the 1-yard line that eventually led to a Liberty safety. MU managed just one punt return for two yards and its average start following Bowden’s punts was its own 17-yard line. Bowden had punts of 35, 34, 45, 36 and 51 yards and finished with a 39.8 net average.

Scearce, making his second career start at safety, tied as the Chanticleers’ third-leading tackler with seven stops against Furman. He recorded four solo hits and assisted on three others.

BIG SOUTH HIGH-FIVE The Big South has won five of its first six FCS games of the 2013 campaign -- the Conference’s best start against FCS competition in League history. The Big South also had five FCS victories after two weeks of the 2006 season, but played seven FCS foes the first two weeks of that season (2-1 in Week 1, 3-1 in Week 2). LOOK WHO’S 2-0!! Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern are the lone Big South teams at 2-0, the second-straight season and the fifth time overall in League history that two Big South teams have opened the season undefeated after two games. The Chanticleers are 2-0 for the third consecutive season and are looking to start 3-0 for the first time. The Buccaneers are 2-0 for the first time since opening the 2006 campaign with a 9-0 mark. Meanwhile, new CSU head coach JAMEY CHADWELL is just the third head coach to start 2-0 in his first season in the Big South, joining Liberty’s DANNY ROCCO (2006) and Coastal’s JOE MOGLIA (2012). GIMME FIVE Charleston Southern and Liberty own the League’s longest active home win streak at five games, as each squad extended their respective streaks this past Saturday. The Bucs’ streak is their longest since winning seven consecutive home games from Sept. 27, 2008 to Oct. 3, 2009, while the Flames’s current string is their longest since winning 10-straight home games from Oct. 3, 2009 to Sept. 17, 2011.

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL RETURNS TO ESPN3 THIS SATURDAY The Big South Conference will televise nine football games exclusively on ESPN3 this season as part of its “Game of the Week” package, beginning with Saturday’s Richmond at Gardner-Webb game. EVAN LEPLER (play-by-play) and RALPH PATTERSON (analyst) will call all the action live from Boiling Springs -- marking the first time the Big South is televising a non-Conference match-up. Overall, the Big South will appear on television every week of the season for the second consecutive year as a total of 23 games will be televised. The first League game to be broadcast will be the Oct. 12 Gardner-Webb at Coastal Carolina contest.

HEY YOU... I KNOW YOU, I KNOW YOU The Big South will see a familiar face across the sideline this season, as VMI, Gardner-Webb (Sept. 14) and Liberty (Sept. 21) will go head-to-head against the Richmond Spiders and former Liberty head coach DANNY ROCCO. Rocco spent six seasons in the Big South as the Flames’ leader from 2006-11, and directed his teams to a 26-5 Conference record and 47-20 overall mark. He is now 3-0 against the Big South while at UR, including 1-0 this season.

POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 87, while the second-longest active streak now belongs to Coastal Carolina (18). Gardner-Webb’s streak of 56 games with a point scored ended this past Saturday at Marshall, and the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ string was the fourth-longest in Big South history. Meanwhile, Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 31, the third-longest streak in Big South history. That record is 45 games, established by the Flames from Sept. 23, 2006 – Sept. 18, 2010. vs. FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION

BIG SOUTH’S STREAK OF NATIONALLY-RANKED PROGRAMS CONTINUES With Coastal Carolina ranked No. 21 this week in both the FCS Coaches poll and The Sports Network ranking, the Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 23 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 campaign (Oct. 24). CLASH OF THE TITANS Saturday’s Coastal Carolina at Eastern Kentucky game will be the 11th time in Conference history that a ranked Big South member will play a ranked non-Conference opponent. The Big South is 3-7 in the previous 10 games, but the seven losses have been by an average of 8.14 points -- including the last five meetings decided by seven points-or-less. WHISTLING DIXON Charleston Southern dual-threat QB MALCOLM DIXON became the eighth different quarterback in Big South history to rush for 100 yards and pass for 100 yards in the same game when he surpassed the century mark in both categories this past Saturday against Shorter. Dixon rushed for 102 yards against the Hawks and added 123 yards through the air. He also surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards during the contest, becoming the sixth quarterback in the Conference record books to achieve this feat. Meanwhile, Dixon needs 557 passing yards to become just the fourth QB in League annals with 1,000 career rushing yards and 3,000 career passing yards.

COMING ATTRACTIONS The Big South Conference will welcome MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY as an associate member in 2014 and start-up program KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY as an associate member in 2015. Monmouth’s addition will maintain the League’s membership at six squads, while KSU’s addition returns the Big South to seven members, which was the total from 2008-12. The Hawks got an early taste of League play this past Saturday with their 45-15 defeat at Liberty. The Big South is now 3-0 against Monmouth, with Coastal Carolina also earning wins in 2008 and 2009. MOVING ON VMI is playing its final campaign in the Big South this season, as the Keydets are rejoining the Southern Conference next fall. The Big South bid farewell to Stony Brook following the 2012 campaign with the Seawolves move to the CAA after five years as an associate member. ANOTHER FAMILIAR FOE Furman is opening its 2013 season with three-straight games against the Big South, and is 0-2 thus far. Presbyterian College is the next Big South member on the slate. The Conference has won five times against the Paladins since starting football in 2002 -- Coastal Carolina (4) and Gardner-Webb (1) have combined to claim the five victories. Meanwhile, start-up program Charlotte will face four Big South members during its inaugural 2013 season. BIG TALLY FOR TALIAFERRO Coastal Carolina RB LORENZO TALIAFERRO is the first player in program history to have more than 200 rushing yards after the first two games of the season. Taliaferro has gained 213 yards on the ground through Coastal’s first two games of 2013, bettering the old mark of 187 rushing yards after two games by AUNDRES PERKINS in 2004. Taliaferro rushed for 157 yards in the season-opener at South Carolina State, the highest single-game rushing total by a Chanticleer since TOMMY FRASER rushed for 157 yards against Presbyterian on Nov. 14, 2009. It was just the ninth time a CCU rusher surpassed 150 rushing yards in a game in school history. PRESS ON Gardner-Webb senior DE PRESTON PEMASA is now eighth in Big South history with 13.5 quarterback sacks. He is also third in the Conference record books with 37.0 career tackles-for-loss. Pemasa needs 1.5 TFL to move into second in League history and 4.0 sacks to move into second in that category. Former Gardner-Webb All-American BRIAN JOHNSTON is the Big South’s all-time leader in both categories with 53.5 TFL and 20.5 sacks. MEMBERS ONLY Presbyterian College junior LB DONELLE WILLIAMS became the 38th player in Big South history with 200 career tackles when he surpassed the milestone this past Saturday against Brevard. His career total now stands at 202, which includes 108 solo stops. Coastal Carolina junior LB QUINN BACKUS is five tackles away from the 200-tackle milestone. KORDENBROCK IS LOCKED IN VMI senior QB ERIC KORDENBROCK is quickly climbing the Big South’s career passing record charts. He is now seventh all-time with 471 completions, fourth with 875 attempts and 10th with 4,972 passing yards. Kordenbrock, who became VMI’s all-time leader in career pass completions this past Saturday, is 29 completions shy of becoming the fourth Big South QB with 500, is 125 attempts away from becoming the third to attempt 1,000 passes in a career, and needs 28 yards to become the 10th member of the 5,000-passing yard club. Just six players in League history have thrown for more than 6,000 yards. FREE LONG DISTANCE Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM and WR DARRIN PETERSON connected on an 85-yard touchdown pass play this past Saturday against Monmouth, the fifth-longest pass completion in Big South history. It is the longest by the Flames since BROCK SMITH and BRANDON TURNER teamed up for an 86-yard completion against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 3, 2007. MASTRO OF THE UNIVERSE Coastal Carolina senior NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO is the Big South’s all-time leader for punt returns (66) and punt return yards (578). He is the third player in Big South history with at least 100 combined kickoff/punt returns in a career, as he is third all-time with 113 (47 KR, 66 PR). He needs 15 returns to break the Conference record of 127, which is held by former VMI standout TIM MAYPRAY. Maypray returned 98 kickoffs and 29 punts in his career from 2006-09. Meanwhile, Mastromatteo is the only player in the Conference record books with two punt returns of at least 80 yards.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet this season in Lynchburg on Oct. 19 for the 11th time. The series is tied at 5-5, and the winner of the match-up has won or shared the Big South football Championship eight times. The Chanticleers won three-straight over Liberty from 2004-06 en route to three consecutive titles (two outright, one shared). The Flames were victorious from 2007-09 while winning three-straight Big South crowns (two outright, one shared). Coastal won last season’s meeting and both teams shared the title in 2012 as well as 2010. FOGG ALERT Liberty redshirt-senior KEVIN FOGG recorded a 29-yard pick six this past Saturday against Monmouth -- his sixth career return touchdown and first interception return TD. He is the first player in Big South history with return touchdowns on an interception (1), fumble (1), punt (1) and kickoff (3). Fogg is tied as the Big South’s all-time leader for most kickoff return touchdowns, and coupled with his one career punt return score, he is second in League history with four kick return TDs. He needs one to tie the all-time mark of five, set by former Liberty WR DOMINIC BOLDEN (3 KR, 2 PR) from 2005-08. THIRTY-SOMETHING VMI’s 34 points against Glenville State this past weekend was its most in a game since scoring 34 points against Charleston Southern on Oct. 23, 2010. Meanwhile, Liberty’s 30-point victory over Monmouth this past Saturday was the Flames’ first 30-point margin of victory against a non-Conference FCS opponent since Sept. 10, 2011 when Liberty defeated Robert Morris by 31 points, 38-7. FOUR SCORE AND EIGHT YEARS AGO VMI quarterback ERIC KORDENBROCK threw a career-high four touchdown passes this past Saturday against Glenville State. It was the most TD passes by a Keydet QB since JONATHAN WILSON tossed four against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 22, 2005. Kordenbrock also had his first 300-yard passing game since throwing for 320 yards against Liberty in 2011 and moved into a tie for fourth-place in VMI history with 25 career TD passes. Kordenbrock became the first VMI signal-caller with more than 300 passing yards (314) and four touchdown passes in a game since JOEY GIBSON had 346 yards and four TDs against The Citadel in the 2000 season finale. SARGENT PETERSON Liberty sophomore WR DARRIN PETERSON became the 14th player in program history to post consecutive 100-yard receiving games and the first since CHRIS SUMMERS accomplished the feat twice in 2010. Peterson hauled in 106 passing yards in Week 1 at Kent State and followed with 124 yards against Monmouth. He currently ranks No. 12 in the country with 115.0 receiving yards per game. MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE Charleston Southern QB MALCOLM DIXON owns a 25.0 touchdown completion percentage this season, as four of his 16 completions have gone for scores. He has thrown two TDs in each of the Bucs’ first two games -- the first time in his career he has back-to-back games with at least two touchdown passes. Dixon is the first CSU quarterback with consecutive multi-TD pass games since RICHARD MOUNCE in 2011. TONIGHT ON 20/20 Coastal Carolina has scored at least 20 points in 10 consecutive games, dating back to last season -- the longest current streak in the Big South and the Chanticleers’ longest such streak since scoring 20 points in 20 consecutive contests from Sept. 24, 2005 to Nov. 25, 2006. EYES ON HAZEL Coastal Carolina senior WR and Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year MATT HAZEL is the Big South’s active career leader with 124 receptions (T-14th in League history), 1,677 receiving yards (18th) and 19 touchdowns (tied for 7th). He has also been named to the 2014 Senior Bowl Watch List as well as the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame College Player of the Year Award Watch List. OCHO-QUATRO VMI QB ERIC KORDENBROCK has connected on four pass plays of at least 80 yards in his career -- the only QB in the Conference record books with more than two. Kordenbrock hooked-up with RB JABARI TURNER last season on an 81-yard swing pass catch and run Nov. 10 against The Citadel. It was the longest pass reception by a running back in Big South history. Two weeks earlier on Oct. 27, Kordenbrock had an 80-yard touchdown pass play with WR JAMES ROGERS at Gardner-Webb. BIG SOUTH’S NEWEST COACHES SCORE DEBUT WINS New Charleston Southern head coach JAMEY CHADWELL and Gardner-Webb head coach CARROLL McCRAY were both victorious in their coaching debuts in Week 1. Chadwell and McCray join Coastal Carolina’s JOE MOGLIA (2012) and VMI’s SPARKY WOODS (2008) among the current Big South coaches who won their coaching debut in the Conference. The last time two new head coaches won their first game in the Big South was in 2006 -- Liberty’s DANNY ROCCO and VMI’s JIM REID.
