With the Deacons set to open their 2012 season, here’s your by -the-numbers look at this year’s men’s soccer team.
3
The Deacons have been picked to finish third in the annual CACC preseason poll, voted on by the conference’s coaches. “It’s nice that the teams in our league feel we are one of the better teams in our conference, but it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t back that up with our play on the field,” Bloomfield head coach Peter-John Falloon said. “Last year certainly didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and we have a good group of guys who are ready to play hard and play the right way. There are a lot of strong teams in our league, so we will certainly have our work cut out for us. But I feel we are ready for the challenges that will come our way.”
RETURNERS
9
Bloomfield returns nine players from a 2011 squad that reached the CACC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season under Falloon before falling in the opening round to Holy Family University.
MARQUEE MATCHUPS
In the middle of the pitch, Bloomfield returns two of the top midfielders in the CACC in juniors Peter Beckford (Portmore, Jamaica) and Claude Allen (Kingston, Jamaica). Beckford brings his rock-solid play to the center of the field for his third season with the Deacons, while Allen returns after a breakout sophomore campaign in which the 5’9 midfielder finished 16th in the nation and tied for second in the CACC with nine assists en route to a second team All-CACC selection. Senior Jeffrey Dapaah (Newark, N.J.) also returns to provide quality depth in the middle of the pitch in his final season with the Deacons. Senior Kemar Richards(Kingston, Jamaica) returns to the club for his second year at Bloomfield, and will provide the Deacons with a legitimate offensive weapon at the forward position.

COMMUNITY SERVICEversus COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT What’s the difference? Division II is committed to developing students and communities by actively engaging in shared experiences and, therefore, has targeted community engagement as one of its strategic priorities. The objective of community engagement is to build relationships by bringing the community to campus to experience Division II and its events (e.g., collegiate, theatrical, cultural). Many have heard this and thought, “That is nothing new; we do community service all the time.” It is true that colleges and universities and their students have performed more community service than many other organizations. However, Division II is emphasizing the gathering of individuals to share in an experience and not just provide assistance to an individual or group of individuals in need.
Community Service - Reaching Out to Help Those in the Community
Community Engagement - Building Lasting Relationships
• • •
•
Time of social gathering and interaction with the campus and community
• •
Feels like an interaction with friends
Making the college and campus feel like the town square
Qualifies as “service learning”
• •
Directed toward specific non-for-profit organizations or entities within the community with an identified need
•
Directed towards parents, students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, friends of faculty and staff
• • •
20
Have specific end goals Generally a one-time occurrence Most often does not require the establishment of a personal relationship between those providing the service and those receiving the benefit of the service Usually done to fulfill a service requirement
Opportunity to get to know the campus and local community better Individuals walk away from the experience remembering the fun atmosphere

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the CACC was founded in 1965 and featured seven original members which competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); Bloomfield, Caldwell, Dominican, Georgian Court, Nyack, Post and St. Thomas Aquinas. The seven schools applied for Division II membership in 1998. In 2002 the CACC qualified for NCAA Division II Provisional conference status and it achieved active status in July of 2004. The CACC offers 13 championship sports, including men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s golf and women’s lacrosse. Currently, nine of the CACC’s season-ending tournaments lead to automatic NCAA qualifications, including women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and men’s golf. Off the court and field, the CACC and its student-athletes take pride in the balance between academics and athletics. The CACC finished third nationally among Division II Conferences for the graduation rate of its student-athletes, according to the latest NCAA report. Furthermore, the conference established its inaugural All-Academic team in the fall of 2004 and the number of names on the list continues to grow each year. The CACC honored over 220 scholar-athletes in 2009-10.
Dan Mara, an award-winning administrator and a hall-of-fame coach, is in his seventh year as Commissioner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Mara arrived at the CACC Office after 11 years as the Associate Vice-President for Athletics and Fitness at CACC-member Post University. Mara served as Vice-President of the CACC from 1998 to 2004 and chaired the conference’s Ethics and Membership Committees until his appointment as Commissioner. He was a CACC representative to the NCAA Northeast Regional Division II Men’s Basketball Committee from 2002-05. During that time, he was heavily involved with the CACC’s move to the NCAA. Mara and Caldwell College Director of Athletics, Mark Corino, served as the conference’s representatives to the NCAA and the Division II Collegiate Commissioner’s Association during the leagues progression through the Provisional Conference process.

As an administrator, Mrs. Wooten has had a major influence on both the success and direction of Bloomfield Athletics. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF
A trailblazer for Deacons athletics, Mrs. Wooten was also instrumental in Bloomfield College’s decision to apply for membership to the NCAA. Under guidance, Bloomfield was granted provisional membership as an NCAA Division II institution in 1998, and her leadership as Athletic Director paved the way for the school to achieve full NCAA membership in 2002. Mrs. Wooten also served as the President of the CACC for the past two year, and sits on both the Membership and Ethics committees. She also serves on the NCAA Regional Volleyball RAC as well as Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Committee. Married to Vince Wooten for 23 years, Mrs. Wooten has two daughters, Leila and Nadia.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.
